Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Review

I think major part of the DVDs and Blurays available in India are region free.

Just check the flipkart section for the blurays and dvd and you can confirm it. :)

Good buy. Did you buy it online from their website ?

Thanks

Well, bought it from an authorized dealer in Bangalore, who was generous to give a huge discount over the company's price.

Model No. 2949

MRP - Rs. 975
Website price - Rs. 780 (20% discount)
Dealer price - Rs. 650 (33% discount)

The best thing about this spike suppressor is that it can take devices consuming upto 2000 watts, that is way more than sufficient for A/V products I use.

Finally I got my player here! :D

Still need to buy the voltage converter to make that work. Will go out tomorrow & buy that too to complete my setup.

One quick question. If I buy BR discs in India (Hindi & English both), will those work with my US BR player which is Region A? Which region BR discs are sold here; my guess is C but not sure?

Thanks,
Durgesh

Congrats on your delivery... Share your experience with the player once you have the converter.

The US Blu-ray player will play BD's marked as Region A & Region ABC, you can find this information on the back of the movie case. I have attached the images of the region logo's that this player will support

Most of the movies released on Blu-ray here in India are region free, meaning it will play in all regions. Some are only released as Region "C" & in combination with either "A" or "B",
example Quantum of Solace (James Bond) is marked with "B" & "C".

So, if you want it to play movies, which are marked only as "C" or "B" then you have to make it region free by upgrading the firmware as discussed.

Thanks jithudigitised & saketb for the detailed info. That's really great, we can play the India BR discs as it is without much trouble. So no need to make it region free right now; probably I'll make that later. :)

Sure, I'll share my experience once I get the converter & few movies to play. :)

Thanks!

Hi,

I got my Panasonic BDT220 delivered from BL last Monday. It was really fast and got it delivered in 3 days. Thanks a lot to "just4kix" and Sakteb" for all the suggestions and support.

My setup is Sony 42" LED TV + Denon 1912 + Pansonic BDT220.

After setting it up I played Dark Knight Rises BD. It was really amazing to watch the movie, though there was problem with sound. I have only stereo setup and BDT by default started in surround mode. So sound was not audible when the audience stared talking. By setting the setup in BDT to stereo everything was perfect.

I tried playing from USB Flac, CD etc everything went well. Now I want to test my WD USB HDD to play movies and songs. But it has a password setup, need to check whether it can pass that.

Have anybody tried internet streaming using BDT220 ?

Great to know that you have received your player. Congrats. :clapping:

The internet streaming is really good on this player for both home network as well internet radio. I am using the internet radio (Shoutcast) more often and its flawless.

For home network its better if you have a "N" router for increased throughput, or else make a wired connection for HD streaming (may cause some jitters). For non-HD media its enough with a "G" router.

Thanks to
Just4 and saketb

You can buy the MX VOLTAGE CONVERTOR-50 WATTS (SINUSODIAL WAVE FORM). This will cost you roughly Rs. 200-300 depends on dealer to dealer. Manufacturer link given below.

Is it possible to access internet using wireless. When checked the user manual it says only home network using wireless and internet using wired connection. Could you please elaborate how to make wireless internet connection on BD220 player ? I can't have wired connection because the internet connection is available in other room. Please advise how best I can achieve wireless internet connection.

Hi Saketb,

I didn't go through the user manual completely, now I figured out how to estbalish internet connection.
I was able to connect internet through wireless connection and updated the firmware to 1.49. I could access youtube and play video songs. I'm really thrilled to see internet access on TV through BDT220. :clapping:

Youtube videos are not showing full screen it is shown as half screen. Now i'm all set with this the player, except using USB HDD. When I connected my USB HDD (Western Digital) it displays incompatible USB device.

Which USB HDD have you tried ? Please share the USB HDD make.

Great to know that you have figured out the settings for connecting to the internet.

Well, with regards to HDD, I'm using a WD Passport of 2TB capacity, and it works flawlessly.

I've figured out two issues with the player...

1. MP4 files burned on a data dvd cannot be played. The player reports that there are no files to play.

2. Stuttering and skipping:
Even after applying the region free firmware and enabling PAL playablity, some PAL DVD's have issues while playing. The video starts but they stutter and skip frequently and this is really started to bother me.
Is it a fault with the player or the firmware, I don't know. I've searched everywhere on the internet but could not get any information on this.
So, I request you guys to check and play a PAL DVD to see if this issue occurs with your player too and report the same.

Though, NTSC DVD's and Blu-ray's are completely fine.

I've watched at least 3 PAL DVD's (all post enhanced firmware update) start to finish on this player and did not notice any problems with them. One other PAL DVD that I tried to play refused to even play at all either pre or post enhanced firmware update.

@saketb, I have watched several PAL DVDs without a hitch. It is possible that there is a problem with the DVDs themselves. I have indeed 'lost' some DVDs - NTSC as well as PAL. They are unplayable on all players including laptop and desktop DVD readers.

Hi Saketb,

Even I have WD passport 500GB, but BDT220 rejects it saying incompatible USB device. I have set password for WD, is that the reason. How is your WD does it have password to access files. Any suggestions

Hello,

Received the blu ray player today. Bought from amazon.com through ishop, wonderful experience, hassle free, thanks to all for that advice :) I received it today only, just hooked it up, everything looks good at first go , but when I tried playing .avi files through USB HDD/pen drive, it didn't play at all :( It says 'no files in this folder' for all those typical 700 MB downloaded .avi movies , can someone help me why is it happening and how can I fix it ?
Please help friends.

Cheers

Somewhere in this thread or on another thread i have seen someone mentioning that the player bought from US wont play the avi files. Only the mkv and other formats.. :)
