Panasonic GT50 - Anybody has it yet??

Burn in is a reality however it is caused by improper usage. The demo piece that I used for 4 months had burn in of the yellow coloured tata sky message, as well as Sony and star movies logo. So for the first 200 hours watch 16:9 movies only, like avatar and most animation movies and keep the brightness and contrast low. After this period the panel becomes immune to burn in however temporary retention may occur.

My GT50 shows a bunch of channel logos even after 30 minutes. Have to run the screen swipe for more than 30 minutes to get rid of IR. It's proving to be a real pain. I'll either replace or return the set.

Sadly in India, return or replace will not be very easy. Since this is an inherent problem with plasmas, I don't think Panasonic will entertain your request.

Still worth a shot!

It is experiences like these why i insist one should make an informed decision when it comes to buying a plasma. A top of the line plasma facing IR issues after 30 minutes is simply unacceptable. You are on a sticky wicket mate. In India something has to be broken only then they will agree to replace, that too after haggling hard.

If it is broken, then they will be more than Happy, as they can say that it is mishandled and hence broken.. :clapping:

Yes if it is a case of total breakdown, you may get a replacement. :indifferent14:

I met shaiju at the Mumbai HFV meet and I can sympathize with his condition. But it is impossible to know beforehand that the set will develop severe IR issues. I use ST50 and I have not faced IR issues. As far as I know, both TVs use the same panel. The GT50 has additional electronics to yield 24,576 equivalent steps of gradation (twice of ST50) and 1080p pure direct plus THX certification/modes. Other than that the sets are more or less identical in internals.

i have owned 3 plasma all three showed lil bit of IR but i never got any burn in. my Panny PV80 is almost 5 yrs. old and still going strong with no burn-in. just dont worry about it.

That's right. Professional modes have limitation on contrast setting.

Panasonic engineers visited yesterday. Demonstrated all the problems with display. I was in for surprise when the engineer noticed the TV menu that was retained on the screen. Well, happy that they acknowledged the issues. I am sure to request refund. It's a shame!

GT50 appeared even dimmer/darker compared to ST50 in standard modes.
Is my observation right?

No. Only the thx mode is different. Both have the same panel and infinite black pro filter.

Replacement doesn't make sense unless they can resolve the issues with it. Why go through the hassle of calling customer care and service once again?

Aha.. so what you are planning next, considering that you may like Plasma (being a plasma owner), have you tried Samy E8000 (64 easily available, 50 is available with few)?

I moved on from Samsung 37" LCD to LG 50" Plasma in 2010. So yes a Plasma lover but the GT50 has proved the downsides of the technology more than the PK550. Don't get me wrong, the picture is brilliant but in parts. The best blacks and shadow detail I have seen (haven't seen VT50 anywhere).

I did mention in some post that my next purchase could be an LED. Tried the LG6700 and it was horrible (to put it mildly).

Well, that's my luck with electronics. I may stay without a TV for few months and see what 2013 has to offer.

Respect your decision.. hope you'll get a better choice in the coming releases, which most likely to happen with Mar/ Apr, anyway keep researching till then..

@shaiju: Sad to hear about this. But I am glad that the engineers acknowledged the issue. Hope you get your money back. I don't think any LED from Panasonic is worth considering. You will have to go with Sony HX850, as the next closest option.

BTW: Can you write briefly about your GT50? How many hours did you use? How many hours were on it when you bought the TV? Since when did you start getting IR problem?

Is there any other 50GT50 owner who does not have IR on his set? On another forum one more GT50 owner has complained about IR.

It seems that ST50 is better in this regard.

I will have a choice between the two by next week and I am somehow a bit hesitant to go with GT50 now.

What will I miss if I go with ST50 besides the advanced calibration features?

The GT has the THX cinema and bright room modes, dual core processor, more gradients, 1 more hdmi input for a total of 4, Slightly better design and off hand, that is all i can think of. I would have gotten the ST if it wasn't for the unavailability of calibration equipment and the design.

From what I have read, there is no difference in terms of black level between GT and ST50, supposedly GT is a lil brighter and has the THX mode.

Update. Panasonic engineers were able to reproduce the issues in their workshop on another set of GT50. So I guess the problems are inherent to the model.

For benefit of Panasonic owners who have issues unresolved, always call or email the helpline. It will speed up the resolution. Do not contact service centers even if the helpline asks you to.
