Panasonic GT50 - Anybody has it yet??

From what I have read, there is no difference in terms of black level between GT and ST50, supposedly GT is a lil brighter and has the THX mode.
That is correct assessment. That is one of the main reasons why I was unwilling to spend an extra 15K on the GT50. I could not have justified the ROI.

Advantages: GT50 is sharper as well in a side by side comparison on HD. Picture holds better in normal viewing conditions with lights on. The THX Cinema mode is pretty good out of the box.

I guess most eyes will be happy with ST50 unless they want minimal upgrades, faster smart portal experience and THX plus advanced calibration. These do not justify the premium charged as it offers no equivalent upgrade in picture quality.

The THX mode can very be near easily attained in ST50 by careful callibration including gamma settings, individual colour values, etc. GT50 values more because of two main things:

- 24,576 equivalent steps of gradation (vs. 12,288 equivalent steps of gradation in ST50). This means that for every basic colour, the GT50 can show twice as many colour grades/shades.
- Royalty paid to Lucas Film THX

A few months ago, I had compiled all the differences:
Thanks.

Update. Panasonic engineers were able to reproduce the issues in their workshop on another set of GT50. So I guess the problems are inherent to the model.

Does that mean, most GT50's will have IR problems?
Scary.
I think Audiodoc has a GT50. Has he faced the same problem?
How many ST50 owners have faced this problem?

What do you mean sharper? Is it just due to calibration/ settings?

Basically, because of higher (twice) number of colour gradations, picture will appear sharper.

Not sure if color gradation has to do anything with sharpness.

Cause sharpness is generally achieved by passing through extra-image processing that will add more pixel density at the point of edge of picture..also generally by adding grain noise picture will appear sharp.

Where color gradation is how many color a panel can show..i.e suppose a blue sky which has various shades of blue color..now more steps of color gradation means transition between various shades will look smooth while lower color gradation processing will render bands of color without displaying smooth transition.

I moved on from Samsung 37" LCD to LG 50" Plasma in 2010. So yes a Plasma lover but the GT50 has proved the downsides of the technology more than the PK550. Don't get me wrong, the picture is brilliant but in parts. The best blacks and shadow detail I have seen (haven't seen VT50 anywhere).

I did mention in some post that my next purchase could be an LED. Tried the LG6700 and it was horrible (to put it mildly).

Well, that's my luck with electronics. I may stay without a TV for few months and see what 2013 has to offer.

Mate, seems like we are almost in the same boat w.r.t HDTV.....I didnt buy the PK550 thanks to your experience shared on its thread.......waited for some time and bought the 50VT20...watched only HD movies & content....went bad within 11 months(vertical lines on screen)....not getting replacement as equivalent model not launched hence getting money back...

Confused what to buy next .....LED or Projector......thank god didnt sell of my CRT (Sony 29" Trinitron) in a hurry like other forum members .....or would have been without TV today... keep us posted on your next purchase decision..

As per hdtvtest-uk and cnet website, the additional color gradations on GT50 made no differences between ST50 and GT50. As you said, THX certification is the main difference. Apart from that, the dual core processor on GT50 will certainly make applications faster on GT50. Other wise a calibrated ST50 and GT50 do have same PQ. In fact in a couple of reviews (I don't remember the websites), the peak brightness level was slightly higher while calibarting ST50 when compared to GT50.

Someone in Bangalore just reported that (s)he purchased a GT50 for 98K.

So, finally TV's are back on the shelf in South.

Who? I am in Jaipur have been going crazy looking for a 50ST50 or a 50GT50 no one is ready to even consider booking an order, can't go to bangalore just to buy a TV but maybe Panny can bring a piece here for me

^That someone is on another forum. I am waiting for more details from the person.
BTW: Stock landed in Chennai around 10-15th February. Contact Regional Manager of Panasonic for your area.

That's bad news:sad: No ZT60 the "beyond reference grade":licklips: plasma!!
I would have gladly stood all night before the panny showroom and bought it on the first day of its launch;)

Mumbai members. ST and GT models are now available @Ghatkopar dealer.
There is some company - dealer nexus since he is the only dealer in the entire state to get stocks in January and now again in February.
The dealer charges a big premium though.

I don't like what Panasonic is doing. With such a monopoly the customer does suffer.
