Panasonic ST30 Owners Thread

??????

I have been using a 55ST30 since September. I purchased from Panasonic Direct EPP during a 2 pair free 3D glasses promotion. The tab was Rs 53K. The unit has a panel 2 display and was made in Mexico. It only took 3 days to deliver the TV because there is a Panasonic warehouse near Disneyland. The glasses did not arrive until this week.

Unpacking and start-up was a snap, but I had to commit an additional Rs 47.5K for a cabinet to set it on. If Mama is not happy in the house, no one is happy. I started with antenna TV, and while the picture was HD 1080i, the settings were on "DAZZLE" out of the carton. I got out the light meter and used Kodak LAD (laboratory aim density) To set the highlight brightness to 15fl, and the reference black to gamma 2.0. This is a 100 to 1 range with the brightness matching the screen in a properly illuminated cinema screen. A lot of films use blacks that are darker than reference black, and this panel handles them wonderfully. Better than any LED or lamp projection electronic display I have calibrated.

I have almost 900 hours and have not noticed any image retention (IR) or burn in (BI.) I have notice a slight increase in the reference black from gamma 2.0 to 1.9. A very tiny tweak returned it to 2.0.

I have some older Panasonic glasses that have a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. They work OK. They are supplied with a couple of different nose bridges, a storage box, and a spiffy neck strap to make you look like a real sportman. They are quite heavy at 60 g and have a momentary push button on the temple to turn them on. There is a single flashing LED, but you need to keep the manual handy to understand what it means.

I took the new glasses out of the box today. There is no changeable nose bridge, plastic case, nor spiffy neck strap. They are much more comfortable at only 26 g and do a better job of blocking side light. The box has a manual and a charging cord. The connector is right where your nose goes, so unless you are nose-less you will not be able to recharge while viewing. Not a problem from Blu-ray, you just push stop for the 30 minute charge time. If you are watching a live football broadcast in 3D, you need to arm wrestle the other pair from your mate.

A nice feature of the rechargeable glasses is the switch above your nose. It is a slide switch, so you can tell at a glance if the glasses are "on", and there is a momentary position beyond "on" that sets the glasses in 2D mode. This is nice for when a viewer is fatigued by 3D, but the screen is fuzzy if another viewer comfortable with 3D. In 2D mode the glasses only show one image of the stereo pair to both eyes.

The set can connect to my home LAN and I can watch Donald Duck cartoons from my laptop, wirelessly. I can even send video from my phone to the TV without a cable. It is an Android, so it can also serve as the remote for the TV.

Hello guys...first of all kudos to all of you for maintaining such an excellent forum hosting all the info one could possibly need before getting a telly .
So, i have decided to start this new year with a jump into the 3d world :D.
I am really confused between this 50 inch panasonic st30 and the samsung 51 inch d550.I am from chennai and after asking around in most of the big shops here the best price i am getting for the panny is 93k along with 1 pair of glasses(is this the best price i cang get it for??) .On the other hand the samsung costs almost 50% lesser and i can get it for 65 k along with 2 free glasses. The extra inch and the pair of glasses have been drawing me towards the samsung while the touted superiority of the panasonic in black levels and 3d performance have me going for it.I will mostly be using it for gaming and of course the 3d.I unfortunately donot have the opportunity to look at both as both are out of stock and are not in display in any of the stores(as far as i know) and have to be ordered seperately for me.Is the panny worth the 30k extra??people who have had the opportunity to look at both the sets and those who have got a better deal at these sets ..please help me out soon as i am looking to get one within the wekend.
Sorry for the long post(part of the process of buying a 3d tv i guess). :ohyeah:

Can you please elaborate more on this? How do you stream from laptop to TV? Only specific formats are you can do mp4 or mkv? Thanks.

3D wise D550 is the best and also most practical with the light and inexpensive bluetooth glasses. Colors are also excellent and color accuracy is gr8 even in 3D mode. Also the peak brightness is more than almost every other plasma in the market.

Ofcourse ST30 has deeper blacks and lesser reflection but i don't believe that is enough reason to pay 30k extra !!

3 years warrenty is a big + for Panasonic. Also the screen reflection is better for pany.

The D550 and ST30 sells at the same price elsewhere (UK and the US). Here the ST30 is 30k more costly (just for 3Y warenty?). Leaving aside other factors, D550 is a good deal.

The reflection will make its usablity restricted in living rooms with opposing windows though.

Thanks for the input guys...the price i am getting for the panny seems to be on the higher side ...i am not getting it anywhere for less than 1 lac.so people who have bought it for a lesser price are requested to share their dealer either through a reply or pm.Else i would go for the samsung which i feel is a killer buy at 66k.

go for st30 anyday.even though the 3d is better in d550 in every other aspect pansonic is better.nobody watches 3d at 20% of the total time.for every other aspect st is better.I got my 42st for 51k at vizag sonovision. i dont think it will cost more than 70-75 for 50 incher.
when buying go by your desire rather than compromising on budget.likewise i have done the same thing in cars i am repenting. if at all samsung has a better choice it is 64d880 compared to 65vt.make your decision and enjoy

every other aspect pansonic is better

I do not think that statement is accurate.

*ST30 has better blacks and less reflection
*Motion handling is better in D550 and also it has a 96hz mode called cinema smooth where it is able to show true 24p motion. Even 50hz and 60hz work very well. Even without cinema smooth the motion interpolation engine of samsung upscales 24hz, 25hz, 30hz, 50hz etc to 60hz excellently
*Colors are better in D550 even in 3D
*D550 has more brightness i.e light output is much more than ST30 and this makes a whole lot of difference.
*This may be debatable but most critics say that upscaling of SD is best in samsung that on panasonics
*Samsung has support for most formats n codecs through usb than any other manufacturer and also support for ntfs disks and 2tb hdd.
*ST30 has internet apps etc which D550 does not have.
*D550 has +1 inch

If i you think any of this is not right please correct me :)

As i mentioned...I am not getting the st30 for anything less than 1 lac in chennai. The samsung i feel is every bit a worthy competitor to the st 30.Both have plusses and minuses.Though i feel the panasonic might be a little better in some areas ...40 k extra(about 60% of the samsung's price) is a bit too much for it as i think most of us will surely be changing our tv's once in every 4 years or so.The main problem i have in going for the samsung is that i havent been able to see it on display anywhere here and so i am not able to compare the pq of both the tv's.Anybody who has had a demo of the samsung kindly provide info about the reflection of the panel and also the extra heating issue compared with panasonic when the tv is running.

Hi, I have bought a 50st30 from panasonic brand shop ambatore for 95000. They have promised 2 pair of glasses. This forum helped me in finding if my tv is a sealed one or demo piece. Unfortunately, it was a demo piece used more than 120 hours. I think, this is the same piece which was sent to Prem and got returned.
Before payment, I insisted the seller that I will only accept a fresh sealed piece, so the seller has promised to replace the set. I received the demo piece on 31st of dec, but haven't received the new replacement set and the glasses yet. They have told me that I will get it by today. I have also insisted to give me only 3rd generation medium size glasses. Hope I get what I asked for, atleast this time.
Friends, I see a lot of reviews mentioning the custom modes of st30, but I don't see any custom picture mode in my tv. Should I update the firmware to get the custom picture mode? Thinking of updating the firmware in my new replacement set, after I receive it.

I have also purchased a panasonic 110 model bluray player from UK, since most of the bluray disks that I own are region B locked. The player reached me within 4 days from the day I ordered it.
I tried to purchase a good tv stand, but couldn't find a good one even in JFA furniture world. Everyone has stands made from compressed wood and not real wood, so, I have ordered a Bell'O stand from US.
This forum is really very useful. Great work guys.

Congrats alpha....Yup Ambattur and Annanagar Pana showroom is owned by same person and hence the chances are more that they were the same piece  BTW today i received the replacement 3D glasses and they only have small size, but it fits perfectly and i am happy with it ;)

I updated the firmware and i also could not find the custom menu .. other owners HELP :sos:

I don't think the custom mode is available in Indian models . Any idea what is the use of "TEXT","F.P" and"INDEX" buttons below the color(R,G,Y,B) buttons

The Remote control that we get with the 50st30 is also a 2010 model. Actually we are suppose to get a Backlit remote with 30series, but we are given 20 series remote. Hope India is the place where all the international sellers dump their unsold and junk products, while US gets the best stuffs, we get the worst stuffs at insane price. Too Bad.

this is the actual remote for 30 series.

instead, we are given this remote, which is a 20 series remote.

Sad thing but this is India. if the same remote was given in the US, Panasonic would have been slapped with some lawsuit!! but if someone here wants to sue Panasonic he's children or grandchildren would be still fighting the case!!
