Pass B1

Hi Sachin,

Please add me also to the list for B1+Power supply kit.

Additionally, I would like to get a CNC MM phono kit (can take this offline and not mix it with this Group Buy). Just wanted to know if the r-core (18-0-18)transformer will be able to power the CNC also along with the B1?

Will it be possible to get ALPS stereo pot by paying additional money (you had indicated about Rs 800 more).

Are there any other GB participants who are interested in getting an ALPS stereo pot by paying more?

Regards,
APK

Hi Anand,
I have CNC phono kit available with me.I can send you tomorrow if you want.18-0-18 would be sufficient for B1+SSP+CNC.
Alps Pot would add atleast 800-1000 to cost, otherwise I will provide a good quality stereo pot (TE connectivity) with B1 kit.
Yesterday I replaced LDR with 47k dual pot in my B1.It is sounding far better than my earlier setup.

Regards,
Sachin

Hi Sachin,
Thanks for the update.

Please reserve one CNC phono kit and one B1 kit for me. You can send the CNC kit together with the B1 kit. Please PM me the cost of both these put together, and also the amount you want as advance.

Do you think the quality of the ALPS pot justifies the price difference? If so, I would still be interested in getting one.

Wondering if any other GB participant is also interested in an ALPS pot?

Best Regards.

The expectations from pot are:
  1. L-R Balance: It should not have difference in both the channels.
  2. It must be long life (durable) which will avoid scratching noise.
  3. It must not have very compact size because cross talk between channel increases.

If you are wary about pots quality then go for stepped ladder attenuators.
example is this. Its worth of money. Try it before B1. I have one working without any buffer. This also has improvement over normal pot. Only caveat is, it has stepped and click feeling with volume change. But is does not disturb the sound. Sound is clear, pop free while changing volume.

I will send one CNC kit with B1.
Alps pots are great.I have not heard one so can't comment.Nelson uses cheap PCE pots in his design so I think any good quality pot should provide good result.Alps Pot would add Rs 500 additional to the cost.

I am also interested in ALPS pot.

EDIT: I remember OM mentioning about logarithmic pot during HFV meet. It should be more expensive I guess?

Thanks Om for the clarification. The Dale stepped attenuator will cost approx Rs 2500+shipping+customs, which I think is a bit too much to spend right now. But your point is taken that if I ever want to upgrade, it will be worth the money.

Guess I will start either with the one Sachin is providing or a basic ALPS pot.

Best Regards.

Is this the same one that you replaced in your setup?

Unable to figure out where to draw the line for a good volume pot :o. Everyone says not to skimp on the volume pot!

Alps Pot would add Rs 500 additional to the cost.
Is this just an estimate or did you check up on the exact cost? If it's only Rs500 more, then I don't mind taking it for the peace of mind.

Just start somewhere. Volume pot can be upgraded. Before that any volume pot can be benefited with buffer. Only longevity and quality will decide how far it remains like it is at day 1. Anyway you won't get any bad pot from Sachin. :)

Hi Anand,
I have replaced the normal pot in my B1,not this one.Te makes some high quality parts.I suggest you to try TE pot.You can upgrade later if you don't like.
Its an estimate for ALPS.

+1 to that. I do trust Sachin completely, and know that he will provide the best within the budget he is working with. In fact I am blindly jumping into this GB because of my faith in you and Sachin.

I was only exploring whether we can achieve sonic improvement by investing more in the volume pot department (and not everyone in the GB might want to spend extra to gain that little bit more:))

Somehow the word 'cheap' irks me. :D
So I am always open for something better if the pricing is marginally higher.
I am ok with TE pot also and I did like log control.

Upgrades can come in later if the need is required,

Ah....you see, that's where the problem is! There are people who always have the 'keda' to keep experimenting and improving the sound. These are the ones who switch components often, change cables, roll tubes etc.

And then there are others like me (basically lazy bums!) who like to get it done with and then sit down and enjoy the music. Hence I would like to start with the maximum possible!

Anyways, TE seems like a good place to start with. No more debate on this one.
