I intend to buy Samsung 43E470 plasma tv. Showroom guy showed me 3D Plasma tv also 43E490. Watching a 3D movie on it was a wonderful experience and it got me confused. Price for 3D tv is Rs. 48000/- (3D player included) and for normal Plasma is Rs. 36000/-. Currently only videocon d2h is giving one Channel is 3D otherwise you have to buy a 3D movie and play it on this tv. Kindly advise me.

I bought the 43E490 a month back and cdnt have been happier. Have watched five 3d Movies so far and it sure is pretty effective at rendering theater like effect.

3D is a novelty right now and is definitely impressive in the beginning. At the showroom, they guys show you clips from Avatar 3D or IMAX Natural History 3D documentaries or equivalent. When comparing 2D with 3D, 3D will always bring in life and spectaculars.

3D enthusiasm also dies down quickly. Wearing 3D glasses is not enjoyable. (Artificial) 3D is tiring to the eyes. 3D can also produce headaches sooner or later - at least with most people. The only 3D source content available are either IMAX/BBC/NG/Disc documentaries or Hollywood movies. It will take time for 3D to arrive on DTH because of higher bandwidth requirements.

Active 3D glasses cost was quite a concern till last year. This year, most companies using active 3D technology (with the notable exception of Sony) have propogated to the universal 3D glasses. Hence 3D glasses cost will drop down significantly in the future.

Even though 3D has its own set of disadvantages, it makes sense to be ready for 3D. The question is "at what cost/price?". As you can see above the two Samsungs have a price difference of 12K in absolute terms and 33% in relative terms. But a 3D BDP is also included (I am assuming that the non-3D model is devoid of this offer).

I would advise you to go with the 3D TV. You get a 3D BDP free. You can always choose not to watch 3D if that appears to be tiring/hurting. The 3D BDP will play 2D BD's also.

Also look at Panasonic XT50 and then compare.

My take after watching 3D for few mins in showrooms is that as a format it is very forgiving when compared to 2D. So when I watch a 800MB 3D rip of a pixar movie - it does not look as bad as say compared to a 700 MB rip of a DVD. Maybe because of the 3D affect, at least the picture quality looks good. I have not watched a non animated 3D movie - so cannot comment on that.

The content is limited, unless you download illegally, its costly and as a % of your total viewing, it will be 5% or less.

But again if you have small kids or have family and friends with kids visiting you frequently - it also serves as a nice show off - assuming your visitors do not have 3D themselves. It is definitely a novelty

The other saving grace is the fact that you can download 1GB movies from torrent sites - so it is easy to accumulate free content even if its immoral/illegal

Thank you all for your positings. Finally bought Samsung PS43E470 as most of viewing would be for TV Channels only. Moreover 3D tech is new in our market and it would further evolve and when i am spending close to 50 K, i atleast want a FHD resolution which Samsung 43E490 lacks. Maybe 2 years down the line would go for 3D FHD Plasma.

Apart from watching 3d movies , 3D plasma have faster phosphor

Is it so? I didn't know that. I thought while the 3D content is being played the panel phosphors refresh at twice the rate than for a similar 1080p video, at the same time the nature of phosphor remains the same.

I would put black levels between the two at a push if comparing superior model against superior model. Some of the newer LED TVs have very good blacks to compete with plasma. In brightness and color vibrancy I would give the edge to LCD/LED TVs, while in color rendition and accuracy I give points to plasma TVs.
Overall, I believe plasma will be the most adaptable technology for 3D TV content. Quality varies a lot between brands, and model quality varies within brands. But plasma gets the nod on the whole.

Black levels have always been the domain of plasma for a long time. With recent technology LED has now managed to get there. I would give it to Plasma for 3D viewing, Picture Quality, Contrast, Black Levels, Fast Moving video, Viewing Angle and to LCD for Brightness and power consumption.

Although I have asked this before and have got some good replies.. but this is for you Aakash...

For regular Tata Sky HT STB viewing (70% SD + 30% HD Channels) which will go more HD as they become available in future, would you recommend a 50" Plasma (50XT50, 50UT50) or a 46/47" LED (Sony E520, 720 / Samsung 5600) as the price difference is mininal -5/10K...

Room has no windows (one far off opening) for direct sunlight and viewing distance is 10-16" ft.
