trying to be precise (I've always failed in that!!!)
Recently started developing a audio set up, I am not that enthusiast in video performance
objective: plain and simple 2.0 stereo set up
taste: I am mostly in hindi film soundtrack, in a word I eat, drink, sleep and wake up with R.D.Burman, in western really like electronic, ambient, orchestra - Vangelis, Jean Michael Jarre, Kraftwerk, Enigma, mike oldfield....
Room size: all I could manage was a 12'x12', I have to contain myself with that
In my place (Guwahati), audition was only possible for HK,JBL, In past I have tasted MARANTZ+POLK, DENON+WHARFEDALE, but all of them were different sources, environment and honestly I should not compare them fully
so after reading, learning I went for
Harman Kardon HK 3490 stereo amp - 120 watts/ch @ 8 Ohm
JBL ES 80 - floor standing speaker rated @ 100watts
Cambridge Audio 640C v2 CDP
Cambridge Audio 640P phono stage
Pro-ject Debut III (which I bought long back but hardly used)
how is the experience till now:
1. HK's phono stage is comparable with 640P, there are minor differences in detail, but honestly its a quality phono stage, output level is almost same, As I am using typically low output ORTOFON OM 5E(4mv) I am getting slightly lower output label, what I get with the CDP at -25dB I get the same with the TT at -19/20 dB
2. floor standers rock the house if it gets what it likes, low range is heavy but not prolonged, they need some space at the back, vocal quality is excellent, have n't done much experiments with high-range but they seem to attack me, all I can say now when I listened to KRAFTWERK's RADIOACTIVITY and R.D.Burman's THE BURNING TRAIN and HUM KISISE KUM NAHEEN they were a different experience all together
3. I am not a big fan of digital music, I could not resist myself in spending for the CA 640C, but believe me after the purchase I have played hardly 1 hour in 1 month, frankly speaking I don't like digital mastering because I have found them degradation from the original analog pressing (strictly my opinion, please feel free to criticize me)
now a few observations and questions (may be silly):
1. Are these entry level preamps w/o vol control use fixed gain circuits? 640P claims 300mV
2. what is the typical output level of the CDP line out?
3. I have most of RDB's vinyls as well as original CDs, I have compared the better sounding CDs - the CDs sound clear and loud but the vinyls bring out something extra such as beautiful instrumental variations, deep bass - it feels like its coming from far far away, sound of CDs seem coming from the middle of the two speakers and all instruments are same and not open.
4. I know my room size is small but can't help, like in thermodynamics (energy is conserved) in life difficulties are conserved, they only appear in different form, sorry for the gyan
Now planning for the
1. WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 10.2 (already ordered)
2. REGA P2 - after years of struggle for Technics 1200 I finally gave up, the reason being a) 1200 were originally prices 35K while now even 55K-60K seems a good deal, b) I strongly believe if a P2 is properly upgraded (acrylic platter, cartridge, speed stability) it has the capability to fill up one's heart
I have tried my best to honestly express my experience
my take is JBL is no way better than POLK or WHARFEDALE, its low range is real heavy, HK is intricate and what I don't like about it is their main amp section is not accessible (it takes much lesser input), HK is dictating a viyl listener to use its onboard phono stage, but it produces powerful signal
the biggest thing that I learned is - its the source that makes a huge difference, there are OSTs which simply blows everything and there are vinyls/CDs one doesn't want to play twice, specially vinyl pressing among HMV/MIL/CBS/T-series/VENUS/TIPS/KLING KLANG.....vary a lot
now shoot!!!!!!!
