Do you also view the monitor or TV in the dark? The primary contributor to strain is viewing a bright display light source in the dark for extended periods. If it helps my distance was about 10 feet for a 96" image. I viewed this in total darkness (with lights off you couldn't see your hand in front of your face) except for the projector light source for about 8-10 hours a day, every day, for about 3-4 years.
