raspberry pi 2 as media player

There is only one think is important that is a pure noiseless power supply thats it

Though I have very limited experience with RPi, I can absolutely vouch for the above statement. The Teradak linear power supply raised the sound of the RPi + Hifiberry + Moode combo to a much higher level compared to powering it from a battery bank or a wall wart. I think a good linear power supply should be mandatory part of the "Bill of Materials" if investing in RPi setup.

The Teradak also significantly improved the sound of a Peachtree DAC ITx compared to the supplied wall wart adapter.

Guys,

I have B&W bookshelves. Planning for a DAC for my media player. Which DAC's are superior? Raspberry Pi with Hifiberry DAC or anyother external DAC's like Arcam DAC. Does any one experimented with both of these.(external DACs n Pi). Also how is the sound quality of Raspberry pi when listening to music.

If you people say pi is good for music, then I will add hifiberry DAC or good card for the PI till I raise funds for extenal DAC. If I feel PI is very good for music, then will drop the idea of adding external DAC to my media player and continue with PI.

Thanks
Srikar

While I don't have any experience with a Raspberry Pi specific DAC, I have heard the Arcam DAC quite extensively. It is one of the best DACs, is very sweet and liquid that you can listen to for hours without any fatigue.

If you have that on your radar, save up for it, you will not be disappointed.

Agree. With regeha
Not personally tried rpi specific dacs but a RPI plus arcam or rega dac would be a very good combo

Or a the peachtree dac which we and Joshua lisneted to
RPI + peachtree + teradak u9 combo and any HDD you may need

Honestly I'm a noob with anything electric. All I know is the Pi needs 5V and 3A.

I just took Rikhav's word and ordered.

Shipping by Registered Mail is $11.50 to India, I did not see any other options.

Same for Singapore too, but also have Singapore EMS that costs $30.

I ordered for Singapore via Registered Mail.

I tried to check out, the only payment option is PAYPAL and it is giving some error right now,

"This recipient is currently unable to receive money."

how did you check out?

Thanks

For members who want to use a raspberry pi 3 and have a max 2a wall charger they can try powering the USB HDD they have by an exernal powered USB hub or under clock the CPU so raspberry does not need much current to run

5V 3.1A seems to have done the trick.

Thats good to hear

Still for the sake of other members I will post the link where it's explained how to under clock cpu

Even while playing tracks direct from moode I am using 3 percent cpu resources in RPI 2, so for sure the CPU power f new pi is not needed for music only

Since day one I have always been using externally powered HDDs with the Pi and have never had any issues. Since portability is not an issue and not even a requirement as most of us are using it for either file sharing, media streaming, or simply as endpoint renderer devices, externally powered hard drives make more sense.

Long-term though, a NAS will make the most sense even though some of the Pi's functionality will be made redundant with the addition of software like Synology.

Hi
Can someone explain me in detail how to setup NAS source in moode audio

I can access the SD card and the USB pen drive connected to the raspberry pi from the PC i want to try as NAS with moode audio

But i have no idea how to setup a NAS source in moode. The worst part is putting wrong settings is corrupting Moode and I no more can access teh settings menu in moode

Even Tim could not help me with this

Only solution I see is that i do fresh install of Moode on the the sd card and reconfigure the NAS source again

Any link with detailed instruction will also help[

^ I've stopped using Moode, but http://moodeaudio.org/docs/readme.txt has some instructions.

BTW what is the NAS and how are you connecting to the network and specifically the Pi?

I'm using the Pi with external HDD via USB. I've still not setup Synology for music as I'm still waiting to configure RAID and setup HDDs. But I've accessed data on it on the network (connected via ethernet), works fine.

Of note I've also tested Seagate Central connected via ethernet on the same network with the Pi and that worked fine too. You will need to add the device name, sharing protocol and login details in the Moode settings page for it to work. Seagate Central is not a full on NAS, but it is setup as a shared network device and worked fine.

Please share more details on your specific NAS.

Hi Regeha
Its nothing but a hard drive in one of my PC (in the same network ofcourse) which i have shared
This is just a temporary arrangement till i get a suitable powered external hdd. I am waiting for my linear power supply to arrive

MENU -> Configure -> Sources

click NEW

Give the source a NAME

select the protocol

NAS Ip Address (I guess your NAS has a static IP)

Enter directory where your music is stored

Enter username/password of the NAS

Attached some screenshots.

Hope this helps.

If it's a Windows PC, just share the music directory with admin user and put the share directory name in settings of moode. However, I've tested this only with rune. Never tried moode yet.
Turn off guest access and put the admin user credentials.
