raspberry pi 2 as media player

You need to be more specific, than "its not working" ... :), whats the error you getting, can you access moode from the PC that has the folder you are trying to add?. click start run and put \\moode and click ok....do you see bunch of folders opened ??? Can you ping moode ip from the PC that has the music folder ????

There is NO NEED to mount any drive manually, you are complicating things unnecessarily.

Why cannt you delete, I just clicked on remove on the top left corner and it removed the drive I added .. it was as simple as it can be .

Hi Sam
Trying my best to answer all your queries

Yes, I can access Moode from the pc which has the drive I want to share. Infact from that PC only I transferred some files to a pend drive connected to the Raspberry pi

Can even ping it

When I press removes, it just hangs. I can play music after wards but cant access the settings menu. SO to access settings again, I need to power off RPI and then power it on again

Then it will come to the state where the nas settings were put for the first time

I really cant understand myself whats wrong with it

I had done the settings on the windows side and RPi side exactly as you had told me to do

Still when I press save, it will hang and then I need to do the whole power off and on thing aagin

5 HDDs is too much IMHO. Get a NAS or build one yourself. Keep the server separate from the Pi. In terms of h/w the Pi is more than capable to run any NAS or server, but its limited in that it does not have SATA and the USB/Ethernet will limit transfers. At least in theory, though I've not experienced it myself. But simply put keep the Pi for a player and the OpenELEC interface and an actual PC or NAS for serving the files.

Test with a USB pen drive playing the same movie and see if the rainbow is replicated. Then plug in only 1 HDD and slowly increase by an additional HDD if its working fine.

What's the power supply for the Pi? Get a good quality one... at the least a mobile charger from a reputable brand like Sony, Motorola, or Samsung.

This is the power supply I am using https://www.crazypi.com/raspberry-pi-3-power-adapter?search=Raspberry Pi 3 Power Adapter (5V 3.1 A)

Bizzarely enough, using the Pi 2 power adapter has made the rainbow box disappear.

Ok. I was about to order a couple of those... now I'll desist.

Pi 3 will run with 2.1A fine, but not if USB HDDs start drawing power from it.

A good phone charger should work fine as long as its only powering the Pi.

regeHa, the reason i said bizarre is because all five 1TB HDDs are connected and running on the Pi 2 power supply. Though, there's a separate power supply for the HDDs.

By any chance do you or anyone know if one can play m2ts files through OpenElec?

Hi Sam and Regeha

Finally managed to get NAS source from windows working :)

I think the fresh install part worked. The source settings menu was behaving properly even if it could not detect the network path
But I still wonder what makes it corrupt in the first case.
One more thing is that even if you have not assigned password to the windows account you use to run windows, you need to specify the username in the NAS source menu

And share name should match the share name which is given to folder or drive in windows sharing menu

Kodi does not play m2ts. You need to convert them using something like MakeMKV.

I thought it was an issue with Moode. Seen enough folks have issues which get resolved by a fresh install. Funny though considering its not in beta.

You should consider an external HDD for the music library. Using Windows share necessitates the need for the PC to be kept on, kind of defeats the purpose of going with a Pi to eliminate the need for a PC.

Hi regeha
As I said earlier this is just temporary arrangement
Once the linear power supply comes I will buy a external powered usb HDD
For that purpose only I have one extra 12 volt out on my linear power supply

For some reason on my mood install library never loads on desktop whereas loads perfectly on mpdroid on my phone, any tricks to get it to load?

Kodi plays m2ts files, infact plays BD ISO and BD Folder structure nicely ...
Kodi might have problems playing m2ts files created by camcorders and all, but movie m2ts plays fine ..

Can someone compare the SQ of the available so called "audiophile" distro: moodeAudio/runeAudio/volumio etc?
I tried all of them and the audio quality is just okay. I mean it's almost similar; if not better than my foobar on Windows (ASIO).
I mean these are almost tiny in comparison to Windows with relatively no extra service layers. So was expecting better output.

Hi
Myself, sam, regeha and other few members have posted their views in this thread about rune / volumio and moode

Moode sounds best for me out of the 3. More musical with same detail retrival like others. With a linear power supply it goes to another league

For me there is absolutely no comparison between any windows based player and moode audio

If you are USB output then try to use a regenerator in both, the pi and the windows based pc and see what works for you
Even try to the digital coax output of your PC, if you have one

What is the spec of your PC and what dac do you use

You really cannot compare a RPi based audio system with a Windows or even a larger Linux based system. A RPi based system cannot act as your main audio system. At best, it will work well with a distributed audio system where you have these systems connected to small bookshelf speakers. Look at amplification in the range of some 25 watts per channel.

Though one can argue - take the SPDIF out, connect to a high end DAC, put a powerful amp......etc etc. But then you are missing the point completely. If you are going to spend so much money and take that effort, why use a RPi at all?

The RPi is, in my mind, ideal for a distributed music system. Just the RPi, connected to a low cost speakers. Use your smart phone and get instant music anywhere. It can be considered as a replacement for the Sonos or systems similar to that.

I am sure in time, the capabilities of RPi will increase. At that time, be ready to throw away 100$ of investment and get a new enhanced version.

Don't look for 'audiophile' grade music here.

Cheers
