Right now I am listening to ...

not sure how new it is but i just started listening to it:). belongs to the genre electro swing. check out this amazon link which gives you a few of the cds which are good.

Amazon.com: electro swing

there arent too many records out there. one of artists i like is caravan palace. their album called caravan palace too is good

I had a listen to some electro swing music based on 20's music on Youtube. Although its racy, it appears to be a DJ remix of 20's music done with a faster beat rate. I think I'll pass on this one...... ;)

Also, Jazz and Ragtime purists must have been scandalized when they first heard this. Imagine someone from 20's era trying to dance their dance in time with the techno swing beat!!!

Paint my love from MLTR is the only song I cared to listen a lot. I like Richard Marx. When people were crazy about spice girls, I liked TLC, Destiny's Child more. I would prefer Brandy, Jlo and Christina Aguilera over Britney. Not a big fan of Pink or Shakira. Abba and Roxette are giants!

Oh yes! I forgot all about the master balladeer Richard Marx. Thanks for reminding me again. I have a few of his albums and do listen to him sometimes.

You'll get no arguments from me about Britney Speares. It seems her personal life makes more news than most of her albums!!

One of my favorite bands from that period. I would also add these hit numbers.

Roxette - Listen To Your Heart - YouTube
Roxette - It Must Have Been Love - YouTube (made famous in the Pretty Woman OST)
Roxette - Joyride - YouTube

..... And mine, too. And of countless other fans!!! :)

I was studying in school when Abba's first abum was released and I bought my own copy. I continued to collect most of the LPs until The Movie was released. I still have a few of those LPs with me today. I also remember bunking classes to go and catch the first show of The Movie when it was shown in the then city of Calcutta! Abba's fans span almost three generations now.

A massive hit from back then...

The Cranberries - Zombie - YouTube

Dolores O'Riordan was voted the sweetest voice back then.

O'Riordan had a unique singing style which gave the Cranberries a distinctive identity...

Back in the 90's I experimented with different genres like hard rock, alternative rock, techno and trance, Rap, hip hop, you name it. Somehow I couldn't get myself to listen to most of the music of this kind. I even bought a few CDs and here is one of them. But listening intervals are very very rare!

So I simply reverted to the music of the previous three decades.

Thought I'd do something different on this New Year's day. So....

KAUSHIKI CHAKRABARTY - PURE (LIVE)

Recorded live at The Queens Theatre, London in 2003. The album was released in 2004. An outstanding performance, Kaushiki just went on to prove the pedigree of her musical DNA. The recording is excellent. Track No.3 is my favourite.
At the time of her stage performance Kaushiki Chakrabarty was only 23 years old!

KAUSHIKI CHAKRABARTY - KAUSHIKI

This album is a studio recording and was released in 2007.

KAUSHIKI CHAKRABARTY - RAGESHRI

Also released in 2007, another live performance by this young artiste.

I occasionally listen to other types of music, which includes Hindustani Classical and Light Classical music just for a change. Although my understanding of Raagas, Taalas and so on are rudimentary at best, I do enjoy listening to this genre of music. Whenever I play any recording of the Greats of Classical Indian music, most of the intricacies and finer points fly over my head. These can only be understood and appreciated by the experts and some of the more knowledgeable members of Hifivision. I can't!

However, whenever I listen to this artiste, I can identify with myself with her music because of the clarity of delivery and the sweetness of her voice and become completely immersed in it. In short, I dont feel like an utter dimwit! Her voice can be described in one word
MELLIFLUOUS!

Do check out Rory Gallagher and Stevie Ray Vaughan. It does not get any better than SRV in the blues rock genre... sheer genius (and number 1 in my book). Rory is up there amongst the best (maybe even better than the best) but his singing/songwriting skills were a detriment.

Robert Johnson also comes highly recommended as does Jimi Hendrix (but if I had to pick one and only one then it would be SRV hands down).

Few songs of S.R.V I have heard like Cold Shot and Texas flood. He plays with Eric Johnson in G3. Hendrix is legendary. David Gilmore, Santana, Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler, Slash, Roger Waters, Eric Clapton, John Mayer...the list goes on:)

I heard this lady sing in Chennai recently. It was a mixed-bill performance, and I had gone to see Pandit Birju Maharaj dance and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia play. I had barely even registered her name on the announcement.

But when she sang, it was just astounding. Amazingly beautiful. The obvious respect that she earned from the elder statesmen of music and dance was also remarkable.

My knowledge is almost zero --- but still I spend quite a lot of time in classical (mostly Southern) concerts and love the music greatly and deeply.

A sad note: yesterday I heard that Lakshmi Shankar died a couple of days ago.
