Right now I am listening to ...

Last night I listened to Ustad Rashid Khan and Pandit Tejendra Narayan in a private recording. Pretty ordinary recording- mpeg 4 file. But Rashid Khan is amazing. Whenever I listen to this recording, I feel so peaceful, its wonderful.

Hey...I how did I miss that out! Dint know that a compilation CD is out! Well I have the other 3 with me. Only few hours back I was listening to "Me and Mrs. Jones"

Beatles- Mastered by Dr Ebbitts.
Guy must be a genius-he does the mastering from LPs & achieves such melodius results.Sounds better than the same music on CDs.

the pink floyd cool down experience-performed by the sunset lounge orchestra-cool.Picked up the cd for Rs.295 at music world.

Just finished listening an amazing project by a team of spirited programmers and musicians, who spent a lot of time and effort to bring this album to us mere mortals. The making was extensively covered on the Discovery channel. The album is "1 Geant Leap" and features distinguished artists from the world over includeing Asha Bhosale.

Most Favourite Track - Dunya Salaam by Baba Maal.

You might recognize this voice if you have seen "Black Hawk Down" the opening track where the poverty and overall gloominess in the feud hit region is portraid, the track is aptly titled "Hunger" in the original score CD. This is the same guy.

Though the album takes time to grow on folks not oriented to World music, the documentary sure is worth watching for anyone.

Now listening to
David Lyndon Huff - Worldbeat

Has anybody heard John McLaughlin's Floating Point? Simply amazing. Its relatively a new release.

This morning I listened to B. B. King's 'Live' album. This man is 81 years old, and he still sings like a forty year old.

I've heard Floating Point - it's brill. But then I like almost everything by McLaughlin.

And Kamal, Bluesbreakers is one of my all time faves.. Clapton wasn't quite out of his teens when he played on this. Especially dig the Ray Charles cover with the drum solo and that acid guitar riff towards the end, sort of like a manic 'Day Tripper'.

Till a few years back I was not too keen on John Mclaughlin. I just went ahead and bought Floating Point. And was I glad I did. Its amazing- I sat through the entire CD yesterday in the night. Only when the last track ended did I realise it was time to go to sleep. And that it was not the time of the night to keep the neighbours awake.

John Mayall of course, has always been a favourite, even without Clapton. Which reminds me of the Allman Brothers. Another great band, though a little short lived (Duane Allman wise), thanks to some sad motorbiking.

allan holdsworth 'tokyo dreams'
john coltrane -a love supreme
two great master improvisers and my favourite musicians

ps
any of you guys can help me get more of holdsworths ?-sadly no holdsworth albums are available in india

Listening another lesser known, revolutionary album. Titled "Siva Pacifica", this is an album by a passionate producer and music director Anthony Copping, who has devoted himself to the project "Voices From Heaven".

This album was extensively covered by NGC across 150 countries.

The album features natives from the pacific realm, and amazonian regions. Though the lyrics if any are incomprehensible, the overall experience is really enjoyable,

A little OT:
And any music is bound to sound sweet to your ears after your better half doles out a serious compulsory dose of "Garbh Sanskar"- Times Music, featuring amitabh bachchan. :)
Believe me listening to these things has been the worst part of my parenting experience so far.

This morning it was Rabindrasangeet. Debabrata Biswas, in his last years. All the songs on this CD were without any percussion. No rhythm, just melody. Interesting experience.
