sam9s HTPC Project! powered by XBMC!!

Try disabling the onboard video (vga) from bios and then connect HDMI. Also I hope when you connect the normal PC monitor to the HDMI from GPU, you get the display.

I have not found any such issue.I have connected LCD vis HDMI through AVR.VGA to CRT.
Whenever I have booted up my PC,I can see MB info on both display. Then windows logo & finally Desktop on CRT & Video out on LCD.

Even connecting directly to LCD in past had no issues.Very initially(fresh windows),desktop used to go to LCD 1st.Once configed LCD as secondary,it boots on CRT.

^^ Spiro, it depends, the reason I suggested this was coz my bro's AMD based system behaved this way. His nVidia 8800 GPU went kaput so, we tried using the onboard VGA and did not get anything untill I disabled the PCIE display from BIOS and vice versa, on the contrary nothing of this sort happens on my ASUS based Intel PC, I can connect VGA and multiple HDMIs as well all simultaneously.

I also think something is messed in mobo setup. I will check today

Yep that's exactly what I had to do after installing my new mobo [Gigabyte G41] and GPU [MSI R6670-MD1GD5].

Since you also have a G41 chipset mobo like me (ASUS P5G41T-MLX) can you let me know if there is some option like the following in your BIOS what you have specified?

Under Chipset Configuration --> Initiate Graphics Adapter and the options are
IGD, PCI / IGD, PCI/PEG, PCI / PEG, etc? IGD is integrated graphics display, PEG is PCI Express Graphics, and so on.

Did you set denon as the primary display? You can try to clone the display or extend the display under graphics settings in Windows 7

There may be a option to select Display option as primary boot in Bios. There you can select PCI-E as 1st is you have graphic card.
With onboard option, there should be ideally no issues. But as Sam said,it can be.
Now once you boot PC with single display, you can activate video out from control panal of ATI/nvidia.Now it should be automatically detected in next boot.Again Denon/LCD should be on while boot.

With ATI,even if AVR/LCD is off,ATI detects it as soon as I turn LCD on.

guys, problem solved, thank you all for the support.

It was two problems combined
1. Setting in the mobo the graphics option as PEG / IGD (first PCI Express and then Integrated Graphics)
2. The HDMI cable at the back of the cabinet was getting loose (took a hell lot of effort to figure that out).

Now next issue, Audio from control panel is selected as AMD HDMI Audio but it only shows available configuration as 2.0 stereo and not 7.1. I read online somewhere that it may be detecting the TV even if connected via AVR so I even tried playing a 5.1 movie in xbmc and made avr play it but still 2.0 audio is the output. In the ATI Catalyst Control Panel no option to set audio settings. Denon is also showing the input as 2/0/0 (Front/Rear/LFE) 48KHz PCM. There was an option to select a checkbox forn rear speakers in the Sound options of Win 7 but those are full time disabled.

Any idea?

Here you need to config your speakers in windows playback device.
Rt.click the ATI icon ,select config speakers & selece 5.1/7.1.

Now you have to turn on AVR 1st,now AMD will detect it.Here you can check the properties in ATI>supported format> you should see all including HD audio.

Now you can turn on LCD.
If you see 2ch here ,just switch to different HDMI input while AVR is on & then go back to the AVR input.ATI detects automatically.

great tip spiro. Feast for tonight after returning from office :)

I did turn on / off and change input of AVR but never started AVR first before HTPC, it was reverse I think. ATI was always giving me only the Stereo option in speaker config.

One additional query on box of my GPU it said upto 7.1 channel HD Dolby audio, is it the case that DTS HD 7.1 would not be supported?

Its not that you have to turn AVR before PC,but lcd shouldnt be started before AVR.You have to change HDMI input in LCD & not AVR.
Now also I have made setting in AVR that whenever AVR is turned on,sound shuould be processed from AVR & no passthrough other than standby.
In auto, there shouldnt be ant problem though.

Some doubts,

So far I have tested BD playback in XBMC Eden using a region B Terminator 2 Skynet BDP. My observations are following

1. XBMC does not detect any of the BD menu-s (not sure if this has anything to do with AnyDVD running which is disabling the region locks) also skip ahead playback using the arrow keys is hapazard at times (sometimes I want to skip ahead and playback takes me more towards the beginning).

2. XBMC does display the audio as DTS-HD MA 5.1, DTS 5.1 etc but yet to test it from AVR (will have to try the solution of spiro)

3. Default display refresh rate I have to set manually at 24Hz all the time from Windows Control Panel since otherwise at 60Hz default rate XBMC is trying to play BDs also in the same refresh rate and not automatically adjusting the display refresh rate to 24Hz (like my PS3 does) on need basis (although this setting is turned on in XBMC, may be beta bug) as a result of which at 60Hz due to 3:2 pulldown the playback is stuttering for fast moving figures.

Are there any other software which will do better BD playback than XBMC Eden?

Well I use PDVD,arc TMT & MPCHC.I dont use XMBC so cant say much.
MPCHC with some filters do better job.I can skip ahead.Let XMBC user comment.

spiro, problem solved by your trick. Thanks a ton. Btw eden xbmc still outputting non hd audio, as even others have found

2 &3 resolved, 1 remains

A query:

Wanted to use my existing PC to HTPC. My plan is as follows:
1. Buy a new graphics card with HDMI as my existing mobo doesn't has HDMI.
2. I don't care about the sound card as already has 5.1 analog o/p and a S/PDIF. Don't want much fuss with sound as my stereo setup is separate.
3. My mobo is M2N Se MX Plus and CPU: AMD Phenom X3 2.1GHz
4. Windows 7 OS.

Just to know if there is any catch or loop holes that I am overlooking? I need simple playback of movies into 42" Panny Plasma.

Please suggest.

Nope... no catch no loopholes :) ..... Proc is fine, mobo is fine .... just get an nVidia GT440/GT430, install the drivers, install and configure XBMC and you are good to go ... :)
