Showcase Your Turntable

That looks great. I really do like the looks of Pro-ject, Rega, etc, above the more exotic looks of much higher-priced decks.

A TT needs to be very precisely levelled and to stand very firmly: I'd advise against keeping it on a carpet.

That looks good, John!

Other than Thad's suggestion, I'm also given to understand that putting the TT that close to, and right in front of one of your speakers, might further cause problems (from vibrations).

Finally I received my vinyl cleaning solution and brushes yesterday purchased from amazon.co.uk and carried by a friend, could not import though shipper due to restricvtion on import of liquids, okay if someone carries for personal use while travelling back to India.

Two bottles of liquid with sprayer and one carbon brush and one velvet brush.

Here is the composition of the liquid as written on the bottles
Propan-2-ol, <5% anionic surfactant,

Will post cleaning performance soon.

Did not get much time to try out the cleaning, finally this weekend could make it. Here is the feedback

Directions on the liquid bottle say that 5 to 6 sparys a required per cleaning per side, I did so and then using the cloth provided I rubbed it in circles. All these records were once cleaned by me using plain water. However to my surprise the white cleaning cloth started turning dirty indicating dust that water could not clean. The liquid evaporates in minutes so I rapidly put the side onto the TT and checked the playback. This specific vinyl has some amount of noises earlier and now I think litle bit if it is cured. So after one complete playback I sparyed again and cleaned this time some more (but much less than first clean) dirt clung to the cloth. Played it again slight improvement. So it seems for older records (this one was a 1967 LP of ABBA) some more cleaning cycles would be required and whetever noise will still be left you have to live with that since these records suffered the abuse mishandling a lot before I recovered them from dust. The liquid is very light and a mild odour not bad to tolerate, on the good side.

One other thing, after every round of cleaning when I held the record against light I found a few fibres from the cleaning cloth are stuck and did not go away easily. Now I took out the carbon anti-static brush and a few strokes of it did the job well of removing these fibres. Record is clean from fibres.

Hi,

Great pictures Anil. How about some pictures of the EMT?

Hope to make it for the B'lore meet in July and visit with you and listen to the F5 amps and Altecs.

Anil, the Jelco is a new addition? If I am not mistaken when I visited your home the SP10 was sporting the SME 3009/DenonDL103 combination.

I would like to know your opinion on the Jelco arm.I have given my SME 3009 to a cousin and have been considering it for the TD124. Either the 9 inch or 12 inch arm.

The Ortofon RS309D tonearm is made by Jelco.

Regards
Rajiv

Rajiv,

Currently EMT is under restoration by me. I need to change the headshell, add a cartridge (TSD-15) and complete cleanup of the mechanicals and electronics. Once it is done and in full use, I will take the pictures and post.

I have moved to a Jelco couple of years back on SP-10. Personally for me, it is way better than a SME 3009 in terms of build quality and versatility. Gives us chance to try different cartridges particularly high mass ones. The SME 3009 is on TD-160 and is in storage.

Cheers.

You meant SP10 vs SL1200? I don't have a SP25 but is pegged lower than a SP10 for broadcast use.

i did mean the SP25. but while we're a it, how does the Sp10 compare with the SL1200?

also, are there many differences between the SP10 mk2 & mk3?

Relatively speaking SP10 is better in terms of dynamics and rock steady performance. It's torque is huge. Cannot be stopped by hand with normal force when it is running. I strongly believe in the combination of table+tonearm+cartridge. We need to get it right. Well set up SL-1200 is also terrific. The best part of these machines is they can be setup easily and stay set till you want to change. No wear and tear. No rubber belts and no idlers. I do have a host of those machines as well, but these are my personal favourites.

SP10 Mk3 is unthinkable for anyone. They are not available and treated as a treasure by those who own them. The platter is very very heavy and torque is legendary. Don't know what it does to sound quality beyond a point.

Cheers.

since you have the 3 TT's, what would be your order of preference?

EMT VS SP10 VS 1200?

3 great direct drives. Yes it would be nice to have at least an informal comparison. Though the question can also be treated as hypothetical:) Have all three, keep all three.

I don't yet have a full experience with EMT. Once I get the TSD-15 and bring the table to full service level, I will be able to say. Just on the basis of design and engineering, it looks a tough fight between EMT and SP10. No quarter to be given or taken between both.
