Showcase Your Turntable

Hi

I've got this Philips 533 Turntable (make year - 1970) with me. Got some old records which i listen to occasionally. I like to listen to it with the speaker it came with and have not connected it to my amp yet. I think it's ought to remain the way it is and i like the way it sounds.

You have taken me back to 3 decades ago.....My father had this turntable & this is where my love of turntables started. We had it till the turn of the century. I once tried to crank it up after several years of disuse but it didn't budge. We gave it away when we moved from our old house :-(. It's appropriate that I saw your post today as today's father's day & my first father's day without my father beside me. Brings tears to my eyes...

sorry for the off-shoot post but could not help posting:

Yes, our father's who had similar interests were special. Mine left a legacy (he died in 2009) of stuff and information when he exited. We used to look up a lot of magazines back in the day and he used to say, when you grow up you may own some of these things and true to that I actually do own some of the equipment we used to talk about.

Relatively speaking SP10 is better in terms of dynamics and rock steady performance. It's torque is huge. Cannot be stopped by hand with normal force when it is running.
...
SP10 Mk3 is unthinkable for anyone. They are not available and treated as a treasure by those who own them. The platter is very very heavy and torque is legendary. Don't know what it does to sound quality beyond a point.

Cheers.

After this post, i looked up vinyl engine...indeed, it appears the SP-10/II manual says that 500 arms with a tracking force of 2g each are not enough to impact the speed of the platter rotation.

For comparison, the power rating of motors of TD124 are 10w, the recent Denon DP-A100 is 10W, Garrard 401 12W, Garrard 301 16w, Technics SP10/II is 20W, and SP10 Mk3 is 32W. It truly must be a monster.

Platter weighs 9 kilos. Unfortunately this machine is Japan only release so extremely tough to get outside of Japan. It's in the same class as the Pioneer P3, another very desirable Japan only behemoth. I remember reading somewhere that it (P3) supposedly beats the crap out of a 401.

Pro studio turntables have a very special requirement: they need to start at playing speed so that music can be exactly and precisely cued. The stylus is in the right position: hit the switch! Bang! Music plays with no audible speed/pitch wind-up

I suppose this means they have to be able to precisely stopped, too. I never thought about that...

That's true. The SP10 as well as EMTs reach speed instantly and also stop instantly. They have very powerful magnetic braking systems.

Hi,

The TD124 comes up to speed within one rotation of the platter.

Hello,

Can you guys please tell me about philips 832 stereo & philips 22gf633 stereo turntables? I mean how are they as performers. I have both sets & i find that 832 has a better sound with better bass.
Expert opinions from seniors please?

no inbuilt phono. u need a pre amp

nice one debzkool, how much did it cost? and does it have a built in phono stage?

Hey sorry about the late reply. Have been travelling for a few days. I bought mine for around 4k. They do not have a phono preamp. Got one made from my local TV mechanic. Works pretty well. Also had a phono preamp built into my Norge 2060.

Refurbished Dual 721 DD turntable

Completed refurbishing my Dual 721 Direct Drive turntable. Waiting for a new cartridge to be delivered to take advantage of this TT. Presently using a Ortofon OM-5E entry level cartridge.

The turntable is one of two excellent DD tables from Dual stable. The other being more accomplished 701.

Pictures are slightly confusing due to reflection from the glass pane of my audio rack. Will try and post better pictures.

Cheers.

Hi Thomas,

Great setup :). BTW, may I know the details of the valve phono stage? Is it custom built? Can it support Low output MC carts ?

Thanks,
John.
