Does PM 6004 have a phono input?. If it does, then I can offer you a Kenwood KP 3021 Belt Drive Fully automatic TT for 10 K. If not, you could go for one of the new players with in built phono. I think Project has such a model. But project cannot deliver music as good as the Kenwood IMO

The PM6004 has a pretty decent inbuilt MM phono stage. If you are rigid about the 10k range, then your options are limited. If you are a rank newcomer and you are making your debut with vinyl, better to go for an entry level one first. Unlike with CDs, vinyl is an expensive hobby (getting a TT is often not the difficult part, but building a decent vinyl collection definitely is) and you can easily end up disappointed if you dont get off to a good start. Read as much as you can, ask as many questions as you can, then build up a knowledge base and take the dive.

Hi,
I would suggest a decent vintage TT in price range 9-12k and a vintage two channel amp with Phono input.Newer TTs with price tag of 15-25k won't perform at par with a decent vintage TT.

Regards,
Sachin

I would always put my money on a decent technics direct drive turntable. They give the biggest bang for the buck if in good condition and if used with a decent cartridge. A good technics TT will be in the 10-12k range (the range specified by Sachu). But you'll have to be patient and also be on the constant look out. It took me a few months before I found the one I have, courtesy FM flanker.

As you are from Bangalore, I may be able to help you. I think a good friend of mine has a Technics in that range for sale. I'll check with him. This friend of mine is a collector. Please PM me your coordinates.

It's not easy to get any good Direct Drives these days. Especially Technics. i will also inform you if i come across one in that price range in decent condition

Hi Dileepboyi,

I was in the same position as you a few months back when i started looking for an entry into Vinyl. My two cents based on the last few months experience are :
1. Read HFV posts to become a theoretical champ on the vinyl front, within a couple of days you will be spouting MM , MC , DIY phonostages, old idler drive restorations and what not . On a serious note the kind of information that you will get on browsing the old threads of this forum you wont get anywhere.

2. Do not think about the new budget tables, I took the oft repeated advise on this forum and went for an old manual belt drive TT. My friend on the other hand bought a new semi automatic TT, in the same amount of money I got a better TT a far better cartridge and a few LP's as well. Also to my immense satisfaction my system sounds much better than his.

3. Do not buy anything (TT, records) without seeing & experiencing it first, if in doubt do not buy. Keep your money safe do more research and buy a few days later.

4. In Delhi at least all established sellers of TT's are asking for 2 -3 times their price especially in case of DD's, but you can still get a decent table for what your budget is if you search hard.

5. The forum members are really helpful and am very sure that your local city members will be able to sort out your issues fast.

Sorry for the long post:o

Although I grew up in a home were a TT was staple, I started on my own with a new belt drive Teac P988 ($70), then upgraded to a new belt drive Technics SLBD20B ($120), both purchased in the United States, then landed with my used Technics SL3200 which was served me well since. I have used my dad's Garrard SP25mk1 (which was purchased new by him) and found it to be very good, however I preferred my Technics SL3200 DD as I acquired a lot of instrumental LPs were speed and pitch accuracy for playback, was required. The DD scored over idler on this front.

Though, not close up shots, but this is my current primary set up. There are 2 bookshelf boxes & 2 floor standers (next to 3 seater sofa in one of the pics) connected to my Int. amp.

Thanks.

P.S. The lens flare in the last pic is artificial.

Here are the pics of my TT setup. I have two TT setups one of them is Philips HiQ International that my late father once assembled (he was a engineer in Philips manufacturing) in 1980s and has a built in stereo amplifier with Tone, Bass control with its own set of speakers. It pays 33 and 45 RPM recorss only.

My other TT is Numark PT01USB which I bought from US in 2009, plays 33/45/78 RPM records, has a carry handle, can run on 6 D-Cell batteries for mobility and has abuilt in speaker (Mono). I play that via its stereo output through my Denon 1911 / MS Aviano 6. Most importantly it has USB output using which vinyls can be archived to MP3 (using proprietary Numark software), never tried this option though)

Lastly my vinyl collection has around 70 vinyls all collection of my late father, I am looking to purchase some new but not getting some which is a balance between quality, availability and price :) For the safekeeping of the records recently I have stored the 45 RPM records in a Crossley carry case (US import) and the 33/78 Records in a Aluminium lined Eurolite LP70 Case whoch can hold upto 70 records. Additionally each record has been inserted into acid free paper sleeves inner / outer and polythene sleeves for protecting the records that still have the outjacket left :).

haisaikat, the LPs are beautifully cared. Do you put the records inside of the original jacket or behind the original jacket (but inside of the outer sleeve) ?.
Thank you,
regards,
sunder.

Thanks Everyone for liking my humble set-up.

@ Abhraneel: The mini gramophone is actually a utility, It has 2 small drawers which hold small papers, pins, etc, the blow horn comes out and has a pen on the other side and it has 4 records, which actually are tea-coasters! Cool utility.

Thanks for noticing,
Regards,
Saket

Hey Saket - Nice setup you got there. Probably closer and larger shots will give us a good perspective.

Cheers...

Good setup. Which integrated are you using ?

That means you love turntables :).
Regards.

Thanks a lot Hiten, I really do love Turntables since childhood. Though, do not have high end stuffs. All my TTs are listed in my signature which are mostly average consumer TTs, but yes, I do love them all.

As for Int. amp, its a Silver faced Pioneer- SX-434 ('74-75). Very good amp for decent listening, again not anything close to Hi-ends but good. Has a very good tuner too.

Saket

Oops. Didn't noticed :o.
I also have pioneer sa-6750 which is stored away. A Technics player which is stored away too. HMV Fiesta given by a Parsi Lady and couple of Shure 44 cartridges. I think should play them occasionally.
Regards.
