Showcase Your Turntable

Just 3 points I need to raise at this point:

1. My TT (Scheu Cello) as well as yours are designs with unsuspended (or fixed) plinth. I'd think, placement principles should depend on whether the plinth is suspended (like my Dual CS 5000) or unsuspended. Can anybody comment?

2. I have thought about sandboxes before. I have not understood one issue there. The weight distribution is never uniform for any equipment (including a TT), so with time, one foot may dig deeper into the sand than others resulting in the TT being not horizontally level. It could be that my understanding of the sandbox is completely flawed. Any comments?

Hi Asit,

Yes placement differs, suspended tables like the Linn generally like to see a lighter setup, while non suspended ones like yours and mine and Santhosh's would prefer a heavier one like a sandbox. I quite forget the reason though, there is one...

Yes, the sand will settle over time, get more compacted and weighed down slightly unevenly and you will have to keep checking the level.

Hi friends, just uploaded some pics of my set up and TT. Hope you guys like it.

Sorry for the bad picture quality.

hrtk,
Your setup is looking good but am unable to identify components due to glare in photography(I am browsing on phone). I think I can see some Leben amp and Tannoy speakers, but not sure which model. Appreciate if you can mention the details of TT as well. Is that Rega?

Thats a huuuuuge Tannoy speaker ... and it looks interesting. Have to give it a hear as you too are in Delhi.

I don't think it is that huge, a simple studio monitor with nice photography.

I'm sure by huge he meant the "driver", which is btw huge(15"), 3833GG also used in the Tannoy Churchill. Dunno what u mean by a SIMPLE studio monitor. Whats a complex studio monitor?

Super system. EL84 tubes and Tannoys match made in heaven.

I have not heard the DMT Tannoys and would love to hear them.

Now , thats one huge driver

To give you a perspective of how big these drivers are. The Tannoy Monitor Gold driver on top of a regular floor stander.

Thanks Rajiv, reignofchaos, avidyarthy and prem for your kind words.

@ Rajiv yes its a match made in heaven. But wanna get my hands on the Mullards or Brimars. Using the stock Sovteks right now. The DMTs make good music with the correct amplification. SS is a strict no.

@ avidyarthy Im in East of Kailash.

Regards.

Hi,

But wanna get my hands on the Mullards or Brimars

The BEL EL84's are very good. They were made using Mullard tooling and knowhow. Sound like the Mullard EL84's.

You should find them for around Rs.150-200 each, but be careful quite a few fakes out there. Mainly Russian EL 84's with BEL marking.

Look for the 7189 tube .It is a higher rated EL84 and has a more punchy sound.

What tubes are you using in the driver stage? Using different ECC83/5751 tubes from the likes of Telefunken ,Amprex,RCA etc will bring about a big improvement/change over the stock (Sovtek?) tubes.

Tube rolling is expensive. You will have to try different makes to find the combination you like.

However the journey is fun.

Heard bout the BEL's but im sure they wont be anywhere close to the NOS Mullards,Brimars or even Tele's. Ive heard even the NOS GE's are great.
I'm using the NOS GE 5751 and also for the MHDT im using WE396A(NOS).

I heard Mullard used to source the raw material and process stuff local to their valve plant to maintain purity and quality.

For example, see
Junction Transistor Manufacture
Glass Tube Manufacture

I doubt if BEL followed the same manufacturing quality in standards and principles even if they purchased some of the tooling.

So now we will know just WHO - if a stone ever lands at his house and smashes his window and/or gear :ohyeah: ;)
