Sony Bravia KDL W700B - Buyers Thread

Guys. I have a question. Initially I was planning for 32W700B. But I changed my Mind to go with a bigger screen. So I mite buy 42W700B in few days. I was using Vgaurd Mini Crystal Voltage Stabilizer for my old Samsung 32H5100. Can I use the same Stabilizer for 42 inch model? Vgaurd Mini Crystal Voltage Stabilizer is 1.3Amps. will it support.

Thanks in advance.

Hey...about 'Playback not available' solution..i formatted my USB card and now it's working fine...if the playback problem stil persist u can try with new usb card i'm sure 100% it wil play smoothly...cheers ?

(It's better to unplug usb card that contains movies while updating s/w manually from tv)

One local retailer offering me a deal for Rs 57,000. I tried to negotiate further. But he is saying he can't reduce any further. Friends, Please let me know if 57K is a good deal for 42W700B considering its 8 months old model.

Heck it is a very good deal, I paid 64.9K. But why such a steep discount?
Is it a used/ display model, does it have some inconspicuous fault ? Check the usage hours and the set for any traps.

If all is hunky dory, buy it at the earliest possible!

Thank you. yeah.. i asked him if its a fresh piece. He assured me its a Sealed piece and said I can check the usage hours in showroom itself once the product is billed. Actually I am bargaining for last two weeks. His initial quote was 61K. I will be buying it tmrw and will let you knw about the usage hours

Off topic : Big cheers as a game of thrones fan :clapping:

Finally bought the TV. Its stunning. Will post the reviews soon.

Can someone tell me how to remove the shadow background in the subtitles while playing content from an external usb device? I tried all the available encoding. But shadow background appears for all the available options. Please help me.

Post a pic Suga49. I don't think I have seen any shadow in the subtitles in my TV.
Try it on a PC as well. If its the same then the font might be at fault, else TV encoding.

PS: Not a fan of GoT, I'm Jaqen H'ghar myself ;-) :-p

Hi.. i tried in PC..Its not a problem with subs. I am attaching images of TV & PC. You could see a dark patch background on the subtitles played in TV but a normal sub played in PC

Hi.. any idea about the subtitle issue I have posted..? Anyone? TIA.

I don't think its an issue. I think its by design. There is no issue with only white text until you are having any images in white in the movie. If that happens, then you will not be able to make out the subtitle.

So the grey box is provided as background for text to ensure readability even when the scenes in the movie are white.

Happy to write a review for this TV.

Previous TV : Sharp 21 CRT TV. Bought in January 2000. There is not even a single issue occurred so far and its still running like a brand new in one of our bedroom.
It was May 2014 and I suddenly got an idea of buying a LED TV. After doing lot of research ended up with Samsung 32H5100. Within 2 months display panel problem occurred. Black spot started to appear all over screen And parents pointed me to sharp, Look how good that TV is. And after a hassle free follow up with Samsung I got refund.

Now Time for a new TV. I immediately started looking for Sony. After few research I shortlisted W700B. Thanks to hifivision for an excellent reviews about this TV.

Bought the TV on Nov 21st. They unpacked in front of me. It was wrapped up with lot of packing tapes. I got suspicious that it might be an used product. I asked them to show me the usage hour. And got shocked by their reply .sir! what are you saying. Its not at all possible to check usage hours in any TV. I got the remote and showed them how to check usage hours. Second shock .The TV read 00196-00110-00207. I said its a demo piece and didnt accept the TV. They said its a brand new and this is not even the TV hours. I asked for refund and a made a scene out there. Immediately Store manager showed up and apologized for the inconvenience caused and he promised me a brand new TV in 2 days. He even asked me to use the unpacked TV till the new TV arrives. So I took the TV to home and still I wasnt comfortable using the TV. I used for few hours hardly.

Finally they delivered the new TV on Monday. I checked the manufacturing date on box and its Aug-2014 and box looked very neat. And I checked the usage hours immediately and it read 00000-00005-00000

Coming to the review.

Needless to say, it a great TV in its class.

Pros

1. Amazing Picture quality. Trust me, Samsung is nowhere near Sonys PQ. Even SD channels looks so better in this TV. PQ is exceptional
2. TV side view. This is a nice feature. No need to copy stuffs into Pen drive and see in TV. Just connect the TV with App and watching anything.
3. I was so wrong in thinking that this TV might struggle detecting 1TB HDD. I switched to Folder View in options and tadaaa it reads everything. Even HDD detection is quicker. Took only 4 second to read HDD
4. It plays almost all format. Old Samsung didnt support few MKV files. But this gem played them without any problem. The only format it failed to recognize so far is .VOB
5. TV Stand Its a major Plus for this TV. Its very elegant.
6. Illumination LED whooaaa.. I love those lights under TV. I wish they provided more color options like in Xperia.
7. YouTube app I am having 4Mbps BSNL broadband connection. But modem is in first floor. I was fearing for a weak signal. But no it played 10 minutes of video without buffering.
8. Interface and tutorial options. Its very helpful
9. Many Picture modes.
10. Viewing angle. They mentioned 89 degree. But its very clear in any angle.
11. 4 HDMI Ports. Thats an excellent option. No need to swap now and then. Each device can have their own house now.

Cons

1. Bezel. ? I feel bezel is very thick.
2. Sound. A major letdown. I couldnt bring the best sound out of it yet. When I play songs from HDD sound seems to be fine. But pathetic sound when I watch Channels via Tata Sky HD. Samsung had excellent sound.
3. Apps interface. It takes more time to load. I dont know why Facebook app opens only in a corner of screen. And Alpha app never opened so far.
4. USB ports are on left hand side. Dear Sony, not majority of people are southpaw. I have to better used to it.
5. Like I mentioned in previous post, there is a dark box around subtitles. I got the purpose that it will be useful in white scenes. But still I dont like that.

Other Owners, I have few questions.

1. Is it possible to do a reset on usage hours?
2. Among the 4 HDMI ports is there any preferable port for SET TOP box?
3. Can you please give me the optimal picture settings and sound settings.
4. Is the apps are limited? I could see 15 to 20 apps. Is that all?

Hi Suga,

While I agree with most of the mentioned points, dude!! What did you do to get this:
3. I was so wrong in thinking that this TV might struggle detecting 1TB HDD. I switched to Folder View in options and tadaaa it reads everything. Even HDD detection is quicker. Took only 4 second to read HDD

Damn, my 8GB USB takes around a couple of minutes to display its contents!!
As for sound, I have my YHT299 connected to it so no problem

Concerning Apps, go to the store and add them to your favs. The store has mannnnyyy apps. No idea on resetting usage hours (why do this anyhow?).
The first HDMI port is usually the preferred one (I have my YHT connected to that).

Another tip. Get a USB extension cable attached to the port. This way you eliminate constant removing and connecting the drives to the USB port thereby eliminating play in it. Plus you can bring the wire around in front of the TV for easy USB connections. No need to peek behind the TV.

Enjoy the TV :clapping:

Thank you for the confirmation and suggestion :) extension cable - tats a great tip. I am buying one.

Resetting the usage hours, I just wanna know whether retailer did any factory reset to a demo piece and gave it to me. I hope not because set was sparkling new and illumination LED wrapped in transparent paper.

Regarding Hard Disk detection time, I really didn't do anything except for changing the View to "Folder View" in option. TV took 3 seconds to read a 16GB Kingston Pen drive and 6 seconds to read a 1TB Wd -My Passport Ultra. When I open the HDD in media player then Yes it takes hell lot of time to read all the files. I guess May be the following point could be the reason why it reads all the files quickly. For example I am having "The Walking Dead" Series in a Main folder. And each episode is stored in a separate sub folder under the Main folder. Say Episode one in a sub folder, Episode 2 in another sub folder and so on. In tat case each sub folder is under 1GB of memory. So its scanning quickly I guess. Actually I maintain folders like this for a better readability. ( This is from my previous Experience with Samsung TV, where I saw Game of thrones Second Season's 10th episode first thinking its the first episode of the season :o, because the 10th episode was listed before 1st episode. How stupid I am :ohyeah:)

Guys even I own this tv. Some times I think instead of buying this for 60000?, could have bought 3d tv from lg for the same cost or with 2 to 3 thousand more.

Is my thought valid.

Note: my importance is PQ and not 3d

Hi Ranjit,

While you could easily have, what's the point of buying a 3D TV anyhow? There is hardly any content available anywhere! 3D is just a marketing scheme as of now. I remember my sim card provider first sold me an idea connection saying that this network provider has a 3G capability. I bought the number then blissfully unaware that my Nokie 3310 doesn't even remotely provide such a feature.
Curved TV now a days are another such gimmick. Initially all TVs were convex. Then came the era of selling Flat Screen TVs. Now somehow curved screens, albeit concaved,
are back in vogue.

This Sony 42W70B is a darned good TV. You made the right choice :)

I second ValarMorghulis's thoughts. Moreover your answer lies within your question that PQ is important for you. you can't really enjoy a movie in 3D for long time. at some point of time you would feel to throw tat glass away. coming to PQ, Trust me after watching movies in Sony you would never want to see the same in LG. LG's IPS panel will look dull in front of bravia. you made a good choice, so don't regret it.

am planning to buy this tv..

prcie quoted in chennai
from sony center : Rs.64,000/-
viveks - Rs.64,700/-
ebay - Rs. 58500/- with sony warranty.

which option to choose..is the price accurate? kindly reply guys

As far as I have read regarding this TV in the forum, the prices have dropped since Feb'14. I got it for 64.9k but now other users have bought it for lesser price. The quoted 64k should be applicable in case you are buying it for Zero % EMIs, else it is priced on the higher side.
Try bargaining and negotiating. Pay full only if it is on EMIs, IMO.
