Sony EX720-3D TV

Got my 40"EX720 on the 5th. Clarity is amazing. Have not yet tried the 3D though. Browsing the net is fun as well. Not sure how to use skype on this though. Any answers?
You would need a compatible webcam connected through the USB port to use Skype. Checking Sony's website should give the details.

I have purchased the TV for 75000/- from Hubli, 40 EX 720. Waiting for it to arrive in parcel. Along with it I placed order for AsusO! pla mini in ebay. Let me check the TV performance and will post a review.

Has it arrived? Whats your experience? Pls share with us.

My 40 EX 720 has arrived. Asus player also. First impression is that it looks much better than EX520. The bottom plastic strip is black in color where as EX520 is gray.
Positives
1. The picture quality is excellent. It has innumerable picture settings. When you feed 1080p movies like Narnia and put it on "vivid",quality is awesome;mind you may not be natural.
2. Viewing angle is good. I noticed that the contrast level falls at angles but brighntess levels incrase and picture doesn't lose it's color. For any common viewing it is okay.
3. The Tv is able to play some formats from the USB. The picture on screen depends on only the aspect ratio. Ordinary DVD rips with aspect ratio 16:9 plays full screen while 1080p movies with aspect ratio 2.35:1 plays with black strips at the top and bottom of the screen. No letter boxing of the image when resolution is low. It plays MP4 . I have tested files upto size of 3 GB.
4. The sound can be fed to speaker system from the headphone output. It has got volume control. Also there is option to hear both the sound of TV and headphone. Particularly useful when the speaker system can be kept connected,if it is off, we can hear the sound from TV.
5.SD quality is good. I have ordinary analog cable. After watching HD cricket(downloaded) I think I can also live with analog cricket.
6. The default TV stand has got some 30 deg sideways movement both direction. I found it to be very usefull for the first two days before I got it wall mounted.
Negatives.
1. Once you wall mount it it is impossible to connect the antennae. For that matter all the inputs at the rear is not at all accessible. The side inputs needs slim fingers for access. I am thinking of buying a pair of forceps for connecting pendrives to the side USB ports
2. Sony recommends a wall mounting height of 4 feet some inches. It is as good as keeping it on the stand.
3. The screen has visible clouding exactly as mentioned in the reviews(digital versus/cnet).
4.Sound quality is bad.
5. It doesn't play .MKV
Queries are welcome

Hi Krishnan,

Thanks a lot for the post.
Please tell us what you mean by "visible clouding"? Is it a prominent 'cons' for this TV?

Did you get 3D glasses? If so, how is the experience?

If I get this TV I am planning to keep it on Stand only, will not be wall mounting. Is the 40" TV shaking a lot when placed on Stand? Is it supported well enough?

Thanks in advance.

First ,Congrats on ur new Ex 720!

Now if u do take,Dear Mr T Krisnan please pls check, whether this 40ex720 lcd-led tv gives false colouring (like blue or red tints) in the shadow dark areas of videos, which should be absolutely "Black"...like as a dark black night sky appears blue or a pitch dark room appears red!. i think u can get what i mean...Also pls check if the tv suffers from colour banding problems similar to these colour banding - Google Search....they may not b very xtreme...but u still can tell well!

please take this as a sincere & serious request of mine as i'm currently on lookout for a 40" lcd-led tv which does not have much of this problem since i find these above problems very disturbing for my hd viewing pleasure & had earlier returned a 40" lcd tv on ground of these problems....& hence looking for a next tv which doesnot have these profound errors!

** u may search for such colour & banding problems when viewing high quality hd rips (.mkv & .mp4's) videos ,as available on the net! **

plz do let know your findings!...i hope u look real thoroughly! :)

'n'way,a few Hi-Q snaps of ur tv (off & playing Hd videos) would have been nice! :)

Govi - Clouding is non uniform backlighting which you see like clouds in the night time (patchy brightness level of backlight bleed), main issue because of which I had to return 2 Samsung TVs.

Skype for Video calling? I believe you need external camera for that, I remember seeing it somewhere and was quite pricy from the usage point of view. Will post link whenever find it.

Thanks for the replies.
1. I have not purchased 3D glasses. Waiting for 2011 models.
2.The TV feels a bit wobbly in stand. But that is only when you try to turn it. The stand is quite sturdy.
3. Color banding has not been observed. It was there in other LED TVs also which I have seen.
4. Clouding is noticeable only when I am watching the Tv screen totally black.
5. I don't have any intention of checking out skype.
I will try to post some pictures

Oh ok, Thanks! I read somewhere that this problem is due to over tightening of screws of the TV frame with the panel. By loosening the screws a bit, someone has overcome this problem completely. I am not sure though.

Govi - Congrats for your purchase. How much did you get it for? Awaiting a quick review especially on the clouding which really bothers me on these current models of the past 3 years.

I would appreciate if you could check for clouding in complete darkness on a black screen like some TV channels with no video, etc (like in Dish TV radio channels). Also, try with max backlight, no power saving or dynamic contrast.

After all the X-reality seems to be working! Today saw Tendulkar's batting in my old TV,21" WEGA" and ex720. Both were fed from local cable. The quality of bigger picture seemed better from 8 ft viewing distance. Much more real life like and no pixelation. On closer viewing CRT was better. I saw the IPL on EX600 also. Some how EX720 picture loked better. May be due to X-reality or may be difference in settings. But anyway IPL was more fun on big TV!

Yes it is real fun. I am watching 720 with Tata Sky +HD . Just amazing.

HD will always look good on a Full HD TV especially when compared to a 21" WEGA :) Unless we compare with other comparable HDTVs, we really can't say for sure how much this TV is better from last year's Samsung and Sony models..

LG Electronics today announced the Korean release of its new CINEMA 3D TV, which boasts the first third-party endorsed "flicker free" 3D images, along with more comfortable glasses, a brighter picture and a wider viewing angle.

"Having used our expertise in 3D to address consumer concerns about 3D, such as the sometime flickery picture and unwieldy glasses, today we're ready to unveil a real breakthrough in 3D with LG CINEMA 3D TV," said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. "LG CINEMA 3D TV will be a real game changer in 3D TV, pushing 3D viewing to new heights of excitement and taking 3D technology firmly into the mainstream of home entertainment worldwide."

CINEMA 3D TV's feature the Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology, which is said to optimize the separation of images for the left and right eye. Those images are then matched up with CINEMA 3D glasses specially designed to receive each image, creating a smooth 3D picture.

The resulting picture has earned CINEMA 3D TV "flicker free" certification from Intertek and TUV, two certification agencies based in Europe.

LG is promoting light, inexpensive 3D spectacles, without batteries, which are required by Samsung's. The Cinema 3D TVcomes with lightweight 3D glasses. Tipping the scales at just 16 grams, the glasses have no electrical parts, so they are free of electromagnetic waves and never need to be recharged. And because the CINEMA 3D TV's glasses don't need to be synced or shuttered, they ensure CINEMA 3D stays free of onscreen flicker.

Further ramping up the picture quality is LG's 3D Light Boost, a thin film covering the CINEMA 3D TV's screen that ensures 3D images are shown at full brightness. By counteracting any dimness that can sometimes occur with 3D content, 3D Light Boost creates brighter images.

Thanks to its wider viewing angle and flexible viewing positions, CINEMA 3D TV is ideal for watching 3D with big groups of friends or family, while sitting or lying down in practically any spot in front of the TV.

CINEMA 3D TV also boasts all the advantages of LG?s Smart TV technology. With its simple Home Dashboard and Magic Motion Remote Control, LG CINEMA 3D TV makes it easy to access an array of content via top global providers, locally sourced shows, and the growing range of LG Apps designed specifically for use on its Smart TVs.

"LG wants to become the leader in 3D TVs. Bigger retailers from China to the United States are asking us to supply more," the top executive told reporters at its R&D center in downtown Seoul, Wednesday.

Following its Korean release, LG CINEMA 3D TV will be rolled out globally from March. Kwon said China will be the first market LG will go after, followed by the United States and Europe. He said six leading Chinese firms including Skyworth and Hisense will introduce LG's advanced televisions.

LG, which targets to sell 40 million flat-screens this year, aims to sell between 34 million and 35 million LCD TVs that use light-emitting diode (LED) light-bulbs, the top executive said.

It is unclear whether LG's rival Samsung Electronics will also release its newer 3D models equipped with film-based 3D technology.

Samsung and Sony are pushing shutter glass (SG) 3D technology.

Hi,

Sorry for the delayed post. I was experiencing my new EX720 and could not find time here.

@Prankey - I got it for 74000.
I am not seeing any clouding. I checked it in darkness connected to my PC which was set to black background with maximum backlight and with environment settings OFF. The screen becomes bright gray at this setting, however is uniform throughout.

I havent yet got my airtel HD connection. I am watching with cable connection. picture is crisp and clear for most of the cable tv channels. I played some DVD movies, they are so good. Yet to see any HD/Bluray. I am waiting for it.

Congrats GOVI.

I will suggest go for Tata Sky HD instead of Airtel. & Before that check Videocon 3D option also.
