Preliminary Calibration Settings

Over the weekend, I downloaded the AVSHD DVD ISO image. The following link provides the reference:

AVS HD 709 - Blu-ray & MP4 Calibration

I do not have a Blu-Ray burner, so I used the DVD version instead (AVCHD.exe). After the DVD was created, I popped it in the BDP and started watching the video on how to calibrate. Note that the video is from the menu option "HDTV Calibration". The guys explain how to go on doing the whole thing. You should also download the PDF manual for secondary reference.

One thing that we should remember for adjustment:

>> To adjust black levels, use brightness settings
>> To adjust white levels, use contrast settings

The disc, video and manual explains good enough but one may have to go through the video a couple or more times to understand perfectly. The following are my calibration results:

Mode: True Cinema
First I reset to factory default clearing all personalized settings.

Brightness: The scale is from -50 to +50. I got the right setting at +4.
Contrast: The scale is from 0 to 100. I got the right setting at 42.
Colour: The scale is from 0 to 100. I felt comfortable at 48.
Tint: The scale is from -50 to +50. I did not have to touch this. Tint should be adjusted to get the correct skin tones.
Sharpness: The scale is from 0 to 100. I got the right setting at 52.
Colour Balance: Warm
Gamma: 2.2
RGB adjustment: Did not touch.

guys, I need help.
I am starting the bargaining process with my panasonic brand shop dealer for 50st50. He quoted 1.09l with printer/shoes etc.
What is the best price that anybody here has got? From what price should I start.

Thanks.

Bad price. Start with 95k. No more than 103k.

A friend bought it for 96K a month ago at TMC High Definition, Banjara Hills.

Thanks. When I had a demo of st50, with my denon 2012 bdp, i could not judge the real strength of this tv because of the brightness in the showroom.
When I played dark knight blu-ray, I saw something that i never saw earlier on my samsung led. In the night scenes, the lights of the cars, helicopters, the bat mobeel were shining like tiny diamonds with crisp edges. It was amazing.May be it is because of the deep blacks of the surrounding darkness of the scenes.
BTW did you miss the cell light feature of sammy while watching the tv in little brighter environments?
I read a review of samsung e8000 on cleaveland plasma site, which talks about slight motion blur in fast panning shots. This is very important to me as the main reason of my changing my led and moving to plasma is because of motion blur.(I verified myself that panny is a charmer with motion handling!).
Thanks.

Yes, Plasmas pixel has a faster response in changing colours (less than 2 milli-seconds). Where as the best LEDs (high end models) could only get the pixel response up to 4 milli-seconds. Low end LED models have a much more slower response.

Regarding the Samsung Plasmas (e8000), I read from other reviews that Samsung plasma has a slight edge over the Panasonic when it comes to the motion handling part. Again, the difference seems to be very subtle. Of course, the Panasonics are slightly ahead with the black levels.

Actually plasmas have response time of 0.001 ms. Trouble is when handling 24p film stuff. This applies to any flat panel tv. Motion smoothness and anti-judder features should be turned off.

I have just crossed 100 hours usage on my ST50. I am yet to exploit the power of ST50. Just now, I got the Bluray version of "Planet earth" (produce by BBC) and I am planning to watch them in a day or two. I will definetly post my experience of watching it on my ST50.

Guys, this is a slightly an off-track question and I would require your help. I am planning to buy few more Blu-ray movie discs. At the same time, I am restrained due to the higher cost. Are you aware of any GENUINE shops in Bangalore where we can get GENUINE (not the pirated one) Bluray movie discs at a wholesale price ? I do not want to flood this discussion thread with this bluray topic, but if there is already a discussion thread existing on that subject, please let me know the URL or the post subject.

I have used Amazon.co.uk till now for all BDs. Sure to customs duty the cost jumped from an average Rs.800 to Rs.1100. I have ordered from Amazon.com last week. Check the "Customs duty" thread.

From India, order from Flipkart.

Ideally sammy should produce a smoother picture because of its 96hz capability. How is the 48hz mode of st50? 60hz mode would add additional frames(destroying the cinematic effect). What is the default rate of the "true cinema" mode?
So what you are saying is that motion blur is inherent to blu-rays.
I have seen that some blurays do not show blur at all and some show them heavily. It becomes too annoying at times. I guess motion smoothness will try to mitigate this by predictive interpolation of frames.Though this may result in "soap opera" effect on the film, I would gladly prefer it than the halos and motion blurs.
Thanks.

I shot a small 2-3 min film using my Kodak z650 6mp camera. I went to the terrace and did a relatively fast pan around of the whole area in a full circle. I then tried to watch this on tv. The result is not too pleasing.

Hi just4kix,

I finally bought Sony HX850. The reason was my daughter started operating TV, she would pause her cartoon shows regularly, keep it still for long time. And I was afraid of IR, went with the brain (even though my heart said ST50). Got my home theater also setup.
Thanks for inviting to your home and giving me demo.

Ok.I think it would have been shot at a default 30fps.Right?
May be the motion processing should be set high in the tv on such occasions.
