Hi all!!

This is my first post on hifivision, even though i have been visiting for sometime. Anyway, this time I needed some help, so here goes.. :)

We want to buy a Stereo System [Amp+Speakers].

Firstly, the budget, strictly 30-35K. Its not my money, its my dad's. [Although I may throw in some of my own if its possible] :P

Secondly, the system will be used in a 25'x11' room, length wise. To be used with a cassette deck & TV.

Thirdly, the sound quality has to be absolutely the best within that bracket. We had a Metablitz Stereo sytem for the last 15years and it has spoilt our choice in audio quality. It was old, but absolutely natural sounding. Thats the keyword. the new system has to be natural sounding. Thats why we dont want to go for the much advertised brands because their sounds are too artificial.

I know the qualities i have spoken about make the prices go sky high, but I am willing to go for Indian brands for lower prices. [DNM, Norge??]

Its just that the sound should be as natural as possible [low, mid, hi all clean and audible] and powerful.

PS: I have this notion that HTs in the same price bracket are not the same quality as Stereo Systems. But I will keep an open mind.

@all Gurus, Help please!! :D

PSS: Here is my room setup:

If you want to go DIY route then you can consider building a horn loaded speaker using Fostex drivers.
You can pair them up with any low powered T-Amp or Tube amp and still fill the room with rich natural sound (I am assuming you are not a bass head).

HT setup at twice the price wont match a decent stereo setup in terms of music.

second as budget is 30-35. look forward for Speakers from very own Sonodyne ( made in Kolkata ) and priced well. also as you said room is failrly large you can invest 25-26k in sonodyne FS ( floorstanders ) and rest amount in decent amp from norge or sonodyne itself

else you can go for well regarded Norge 2060/ 1000 amp + Wharfedale speaker combo.

check on forums for used deals as folks with audio hobby maintain gear in mint condition.

casseste deck and tv will not be the best source for music or ever movies.

for whatever setup you buy if you want to use it to its capability get a good source.

CDP/HTPC etc etc..

last but not the least...

WELCOME to the forum.

earlier, i would have gone for the DIY route.. but not now.. no time. and i dont stay at home anymore. i am in Pune. My parents are in Kolkata.
and tubes?? they are still available in that price range??

WELCOME to the forum.

Thanks a lot buddy!!

so i was correct about the HT assumption.. :P

yes, i have considered Sonodyne. Its still one of the very best in our price bracket..
See, i had Sonodyne, Norge and DNM in my mind when i posted this... i just need a confirmation from you guys on the better brand and also the best combination..
I also need some rough estimates of the pricing.. If you have any suggestion, kindly mention the prices too..

welcome here!

for such requirement(s), even in my mind the name that first came up was Sonodyne (since, Kolkata)! however, i believe that if you want to use those speakers for movies too occasionally, then the whole experience might not be that great. keep it dedicated for stereo, and that would be good! also, check up with Sonodyne, as there's a probability that they might have some offer lined up for late December; otherwise, around Jan. 26th, they usually have some offer(s). one of these two times would be a good period to purchase from them, if you decide to.

for a Norge amp, place a request in the WTB section, and hopefully you would get offers from Kolkata-based FMs. i suppose it would be tough to get a new Norge amp from Kolkata, since its Mumbai-based, and perhaps there are few resellers.

another option could be getting a pair of bookshelves. i have listened to some really nice, custom-built bookshelves, which sounded atleast as good as some branded floorstanders out there, if not better; or perhaps, most probably, yes, even more good sounding! and also, speaking aesthetically, i can tell from my own (and others' as well) experience, and am sure many here would concur, that floorstanders are not exactly viewed as 'our dear' speakers by folks at homes!

my recommendation would be to get someone from Kolkata (by enquiring in the forum), who could build a pair for you, or have a few already made from which you could select one. will be cheaper, has a chance of sounding better than some from brands, and you could also get a pair built as per your taste in music.

all this could be done only when you go to your hometown the next time. so it will be good if you could collect all the required and necessary info beforehand. and that is what the forum is for; all the best!

you can look at wharfedale diamonds bookshelf speakers. the bose 301's are good as well. the yamaha pairs well with them both. if youre looking at a less expensive amp then norge is good

Amp - Sonodyne SiA320
Speakers - Sonodyne Sonus2504
Great combination, within your budget too! Audition rooms in your city present. Hear their other speaker models too. Pick the one friendliest to YOUR ears.

Yes thanks for the heads up.. i'll definitely check for any offers with Sonodyne.

Why do you say Bookshelves are better than Towers??

i wont be able to spend much time even if i visit Kolkata for asking someone to build speakers, so thats out of question. But if some FM has prebuilt custom speakers, i will be willing to look into them. Location in Kolkata/Pune/Mumbai. Can you kindly PM me some FMs so that i can talk to them?

My suggestion may not win any favors here. You could give this a shot. I happened to listen to a pair of Yamaha HS8 studio monitors and was blown away by the sound. Comparisons were with KEF Q300, Polk Audio RtiA3 and a Bose 301 (total trash). The Yamaha does have the advantage of better bass due to a bigger low frequency speaker driver. Keeping this aside, it is still an outstanding speaker. Not a perfect fit in your budget but totally worth an audition. Connectivity is the only issue as the Yamaha comes with phono and xlr connectors. These are connection methods that are are not home friendly.

My next recommendation will be the Cambridge Audio S30 paired with a Marantz PM5004.

Check this link http://www.hifivision.com/sale-owner/47639-my-gr-research-bookshelf-speaker-ferrari-red.html. You can check with Magma to visit Mumbai and audition the speakers. Also try and get the audition with Norge/Sonodyne amp.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
