Sub Woofer suggestion please

i am not sure but somewhere in a thread its price is mentioned close to what SVSPB12 costs. something like 700USD+
you shall contact to 'kanwar' on HFV for exact pricing

SVS PB12 costs merely $769.00 = 41,783.90 INR :indifferent14:

bTW SVS is also available in Kolkata from Harmony Audio, 13, Shyama Charan Smriti Tirtha Road, P.O. New Alipur. in case anybody is interested.

i think 42k is pretty much acceptable price for what you get in return...i.e. distortion free 25hz flat response. all 8",10" and 12" commercial subs achieve low frequency reproduction by having high cone excursion(thus inserting distortion at the same time losing on dynamics) while a bigger cone achieves the same purpose without much of excursion and hence gives smooth dynamics required for a musical sub

Got a reply from kanwar. Zephyr doesn't cost anywhere close to the SVS. He quoted 80k+ for it. I'm sure its worth its price but its way over my budget I'm afraid.

just the passive sub? i guess this includes power amp module and necessary filter/EQ also. i read avepa 21" came with its own power amp and a filter circuit in a separate box.

I happened to speak with Sandeep from Audire on SVS subs. they claim the new model 1000 is THE best subwoofer entry level on price/performance ratio. It is priced at 40900/-.

Good news is they (Audire) are opening up a showroom in chennai. we might get to audition SVS in chennai.:yahoo:

Sandeep happend to praise SVS for thier service to customers wherein replace happens within 1 week in case of any issues.:licklips:

Just a question to members who own either HSU or Velodyne or SVS. I am sure these 3 are among the best SUB for home purposes. if someone has that 40000/- where will one decide to invest... Unless someone has any other names that can compete with these 3.

Lets keep this thread going..:clapping:

Think SVS would be the way to go. Have heard Velodyne, while being nice subs IMO they donot create that sonic pressure environment which SVS can, if that's what you want. I bought mine (PC12) from Sandeep a year back. Very helpful guy. Havn't heard the 1000 but the specs look impressive.

dont own any of the above 3 but I have also heard very good things about Rhytmik Audio diy kit in the same price range.

Thanks VSG for your inputs. Hope your SVS is providing good service to you ... great to hear. How much did you pay for this beast and what is your room size and speaker setup.

Thanks Manoj. Not sure who are the dealers of Rhytmik Audio in India. Audition is always a problem when it comes to international brands.

Paid around 58k not sure of the price now. The room size is 15x24 approx. The Front speakers are Dynaudio Focus 140, rear dynaudio dm 2/7 n center JBL EC35. For music which is 70% of my usage I am mostly into stereo using direct mode wherein subwoofer isn't employed. Use subwoofer for movies, and wouldn't mind saying the bass produced by this is startling to say the least. Would definitely recommend auditioning SVS before you settle for anything.

VSG, good to hear great things about SVS. Let me audition them when they open up in chennai next month and decide thanks.

BUt a question in general, How does one measure how low the sub goes? is there any application or dB meter? pls throw somelight. Ans another question- is soundproofing absolutely necessary where dedicated rooms are not there.
Do you think that brand like SVS can still perform without proper sound proofing etc...

thanks.,

you will need a SPL meter at the least to measure the sub output using tone generation method. other sophisticated method is freq.sweeping. for this you will need a mic that can measure atleast down to 20hz and a software for the sweep and graphical plotting. in addition mic may need a preamp also.

oh....that was too technical for me... anyways thanks soundnovice.

simples but inaccurate way would be just feed low freq.tones(using a free tone generator software) and see if the sub produces without much of distortion and too much cone movement. be careful to keep the volume very low else you may either damage your ears or sub!!

Thanks Soundnovice. will try that. I hope we can play the files through media player in stereo mode. I have few test files for SUB. What if the SUB vibrates a lot? DOes it mean it has aged?

Mine definitely has. it is a 10 yr old sub, performing ok till now.. but not great.

reduce the volume immediately if it vibrates a lot.

Vibration of the cones happens when the cone is subjected to very low frequency signals and at same time following things could happen:

1. Either the amplifier is running out of power or clipping prematurely.

2. The driver is not enough damped, means it is working in its UNTUNED area. Most small subs have this behavior because of less volume and high rate of non-linearity in the pistonic motion.

With large cones, they are inherently damped because they encounter air mass resistance from the compression of air alone much greater than smaller cones.

Hi Kanwar - are you sure this has anything to do with amplifier? Unless you are talking of a passive subwoofer.

First thing to check for over vibrating is the surface on which the sub is placed.

Make sure that the surface is flat. Try using a door mat or adjusting the spikes if the surface is not flat.

Hi Kanwar - are you sure this has anything to do with amplifier? Unless you are talking of a passive subwoofer.

If the vibration is cone based and not based on under damped driver, then it happens when power supply of the amplifier lacks continuous current capability when the amplifier clips, thats why you see peak ratings on subwoofers which have no real value.
