I need UPS system which will connect to these equipments below.

Name Max. power Consumption
1. Samsung 40 LCD 190W
2. Sony PS3 250W
3. Any SetTopBox Not sure which one I will go but you can take any STB ( right now I use Hathway STB )
4. Future use 100-150W ( not yet decided but need some room later )

Backup time is not so significant to me as we have generator backup in the apartment . I am looking for 10-15 Mins Maximum.

Please suggest me some good UPS systems and the prices

Thanks,
Sudhakar Gajjala

Well your lcd will consume less then 90watt under typical backlight settings.
Not sure about the ps3 but if it does consume 250watt.
STB at 25watt to 30watt.

well if you just want back up you can go for the APC 850sine wave home ups,can handle around 500watt costs about 5.5k to 5.8k.
And a 40AH VRLA batteries from Quanta or Exide should cost around 3.3k.

Well the lcd won't consume 190watt unless the backlight is set to max,the volume is set to max with lots of sound in source, and the USB ports are all occupied, even then the consumption won't really touch the 190watt.
Well you can also go for the APC smart SUA1000i it will give a back up of around 15min should cost 12.5k it does AVR as well.
You will need to buy IEC C14 to indian conversion plug from MX should cost around Rs60 connecting you set top box.since the UPS only has IEC C13 type output

well you can get cheaper ones but they only will output a non pure sinewave.
but does your apartment generator really take 15min to be switched on.
I you just want a backup of around 7 min you can go for the APC SUA750i costs around 8k .
If you don't mind the non sine wave ups then you can also get the APC BR1000IN you can also add the external battery pack of 24v 18A.

Hi Addr,
Thanks for the info. What do you mean by non sine wave.. I am novice in this.
My apartment back up comes within 1 minute. I am not looking more than 10 Min backup. I just want to protect my LCD from surge protection and any voltage fluctuations and also uinterrupted gaming with PS3..

Do you suggest APC BR1000IN for my requirement??

Well the power supply supplied by the power company & your generator are in sinewave forum ,where as cheap ups & inverter output squarewave during back up, which in the long run can damage the appliance with inductive load like smps, fans etc
The apc BR1000in will output a stepped up sinewave, which is better then square wave, but still not true sinewave, just do google search you wil get more info in the wiki link you can see the image of how a sinewave & square wave be en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_wave

The apc Smart series like SUA750i will output sinewave & can give a backnup of around 7min with PS3 & tv running.will give around 10min if you lower the backlight setting.

Hello Addr,
I just enquired the APC UPS BI850SINE model which costs 14.5 K with 3 hours battery backup or 13K with 1.5 hours battery backup..
I remember you said 850 model costs around 5.8 K and battery 3.3 K wihcih comes around 9K. Do I get the same model for the price of 9K??

Yes i did get a quote of 5.8k or even slightly less.
For 3.3k i believe the battery is a 40ah Sealed maintaince free batteries or a 80ah flat plate battery, which is just a re badged automotive battery

Do not compromise on the battery get a good one,so that you don't have to worry about topping it up occasionally ,for now we are getting good power. Its only a matter of time before our government resort to load shedding, which means you need a battery which is capable of deep discharge cycles.
If you have a 500watt of load and you want back up for 3 hrs you will need a 150ah battery

Thanks Addr. I will bargain if possible and go for it. One more question. APC 850 does it also has Surge protection??

Kittu1977, I have seen the pics of those APC. Its manufactured in 2007. I would rather go for new one due to various reasons..

I agree its not a signwave and old model so you can go for new luminous inverters (signwave) ...

Thanks Kittu for the info. I will lokkout different models and decide? Is it worth buying APC850 Sinewave UPS for 14.5k which gives 3 hrs backup??

for the question pulsar asked,
I am looking for UPS mainly because of sudden shutdown and restart of the TV when power comes up. There may not be any problem while shutting down but when power comes up , There could be sudden spikes which can damage the TV. In my Apt, I have generator backup so in case of power failures, gen power comes up within 30 sec. I will not be able to switch off the TV during that time. With UPS TV need not power down and up..

My undersanding may be wrong.. Lets hear fro experts out there!!!

Unless you require backup for your tv, a ups is not at all required, instead a good stabilizer with initial delay (not a must) is more than enough.

Kittu, help me understand

An uninterruptible power supply(UPS),also known as a continuous power supply(CPS) or a battery backup is a device which maintains a continuous supply of electric power to connected equipment by supplying power from a separate source when utility power is not available. It differs from an auxiliary power supply or standby generatorhere are three distinct UPS types:
off-line:remains idle until a power failure occurs, and then switches from utility power to its own power source, almost instantaneously.
on-line:continuously powers the protected load from its energy reserves stored in a lead-acid battery or flywheel, while simultaneously replenishing the reserves from the AC power. It also provides protection against all common power problems, and for this reason it is also known as a power conditioner and a line conditioner.

A voltage stabilizer is an electrical appliance used to feed constant voltage current to electrical gadgets like ACs and computers, and protects them from damage due to voltage fluctuations. It works on the principle of a transformer, where the input current is connected to primary windings and output is received from secondary windings. When there is a drop in incoming voltage, it activates electromagnetic relays which add to more number of turns in the secondary winding, thus giving higher voltage which compensates for loss in output voltage. When there is rise in the incoming voltage, the reverse happens, and, thus, the voltage at the output side remains almost unchanged.
