Suitable UPS system for LCD TV

Unless you require backup for your tv, a ups is not at all required, instead a good stabilizer with initial delay (not a must) is more than enough.

Thanks for clarifying that. Already 65K is a a big hole in the pocket, 12K on UPS is too much.

So which STABILISER is good for a 40" LCD or 40" plasma + WDTV + TATA SKY HD.

Thanks Kittu for the info. I will lokkout different models and decide? Is it worth buying APC850 Sinewave UPS for 14.5k which gives 3 hrs backup??

for the question pulsar asked,
I am looking for UPS mainly because of sudden shutdown and restart of the TV when power comes up. There may not be any problem while shutting down but when power comes up , There could be sudden spikes which can damage the TV. In my Apt, I have generator backup so in case of power failures, gen power comes up within 30 sec. I will not be able to switch off the TV during that time. With UPS TV need not power down and up..

My undersanding may be wrong.. Lets hear fro experts out there!!!

Well since you have a generator which kicks in at 30sec buy a APC SUA1000i(660watt) this has the surge protection and more importantly does AVR,it outputs pure sine wave and has a faster change over time.It comes with internal batteries sufficient for the few mins of back up.So incase you add a PS3 or Htib or a XBOX .You can also go in for SUA750i costs around 8k handles around 500watt which is more then enough for your lcd tv.
I have a SUA 1000UXI(800watt) which uses external battery,the tv doesn't restart.

Servo based stabilizers are good but expensive you can go for Vgaurd digital series depending on your power consumption requirements..

caliculate total power requirements (watts) of all your devices and buy .

If you don't want any back up then just get a V-guard digi 100 it can handle load of 660watt good for plasmas upto 50".
Get a VG crystal(440watt) if its a lcd,you can run 2x 55" lcds or 3 x 65" Led-lit lcds

Thanks adder I was wondering howmany watts that crystal can handle. :clapping: and Digi 200 1400watts?

I was also in a similar dilemma a couple of months back. I am using APC Backup UPS RS 1100 for my system now. I am running a pany x20 42 in Plasma , Panasonic SA PT- 465 5.1 WDTV, Tata Sky DTH. It gives me a backup of 10 - 15 mts on full load and costed me 4800. hope it helps.

This is good information indeed. Now I am in dielamma again to either go for UPS or just stabilizer. What I heard from Samsung service guy is that LCD itself has inbuilt stabilizer. Thats the reason I am onoy looking UPS.
Please suggest

The lcd has a SMPS,just like your pc it has a normal operating range of 110v to 240v.The samsung guys don't know much their job is not to repair but just replace, the entire board or panel.

If you get a stabilizer it won't give the back up until the generator kicks in,but does better AVR then a UPS which gives back up and does limited AVR.

For eg based on my own testing the VG crystal model operates from as low as 125v and gives a output of 144v,if the input is 137v it outputs 160v and so on.

A apc UPS will operate from 160v input / and output 200v.

Low voltages are fine for tvs since they operate from 110v,its the high voltage that one should worry about.

What is the price of DIGI 100. I have to purchase it tomorrow

I have a 800VA Xenon Home UPS with a 140Ah battery. It produces a pure sine-wave output that is safe for electronics. Cost me 12.5K with a nice trolley.

The following are powered by it:
46" LCD TV - Samsung Series 5 (2008 model)
Hometheater PC - with Radeon HD 4350, 2TB Raid-1 array & Blu-Ray Disc Drive
Creative SoundWorks Surround Sound System
Brite-View CinemaTube 5005HD - Full HD media player w/ network streaming
One external HDD
BSNL ADSL Modem w/ Wireless Router for Home Networking
Cordless Telephone

The battery can provide power to the entire system for 3+ hours. The UPS has both high-voltage & low-voltage cut-offs and switches to battery power in less than 10 ms (this is important for the HTPC, it will reboot if the switch-over time is greater than 20 ms).

If it is within your budget, I'd recommend a UPS for the flexibility & versatility. For example, when we had a long power outage one evening (and our apt complex generator ran out of diesel), we wheeled the UPS trolly to the living room and connected a table fan, couple of lights and my laptop to it so that my kids could complete their homework. It is portable enough that I carried it with me to a picnic once.

Cheers.

^Xenon is basically a inverter if their is low voltage or high voltage it simply goes to back up,where as a UPS such as the ones from APC will first do AVR(auto voltage regulation),only if the voltage falls below 158v or above 286v will it go to back up, so if the voltage is 160v or 285v it will do AVR ,their by saving the battery from depleting.

Maybe what you say is true, I do not know the technical details. The manual gives the voltage cut-offs in UPS mode as 190 for low and 250 for high. What matters is how the unit performs, one should never have to worry about them.

I have five Xenon units at my office. Two 3KVA units that support 12 PCs each, one 1.4KVA unit that supports the lights & fans, one 1.4 KVA unit that supports two servers & printers and one 800KVA unit that serves my cabin with my phones, PC, printer, fax etc.

Earlier I had an APC unit in my office that conked just one month after its warranty expired. The vendor first said MOSFET was toasted, then he said the board needs to be replaced and then he blamed my internal wiring... basically after three weeks he said that the unit cannot be repaired. Very poor service from both the dealer & APC. Will not be buying another of their product anytime soon. I use the APC block as my foot-rest now ;)

I've been using the Xenon for two years now and am fully satisfied with them. I had a problem with one of the 3KVA units. The dealer sent me a replacement the same day to hold the fort while the problem unit was fixed. The local Xenon service guys couldn't diagnose the problem, as it was new model and they weren't trained. So Xenon sent their factory engineer from Tirupati to identify and fix the issue. They replaced the board twice before they were able to diagnose and fix the problem. All this took 2 months - and I never had to worry because I had the backup unit from the dealer which I was told to return only when I am fully satisfied that the unit has been fixed. Now, that is service.

Any product can develop a flaw, what matters is how it is attended to. In my case APC failed miserably while Xenon completely met my expectations.

Sorry for the long story.... I get riled up when I hear APC. Pls don't mind. :D

Well the APC smart series of ups and other line interactive models are different from the indian designed APC Home UPS aka inverters or offline UPS.
Apc is still the leading provider of power solutions, most multi national companies use APC,including Microsoft.Atleast here in Bangalore their service is quite good.
There service network is quite good.

XENON has changed their name to tribal, its owned by amaraja.

Reviving this old thread as I didn't want to open another thread on this topic...

I got my APC Smart UPS SUA1000i to connect my 3D LED TV. It's a 220-240 V UPS from a dealer in Hyderabad.

I don't see any power cord with it, so that I can plug the UPS into the power supply. 2 of these came with it.

Also, where we connect the equipments, the pin plug sizes in the
receptacle are not standard I guess? They have the flat pins. I cannot
connect my USA TV which has 2 flat pins into the UPS. Neither can I
connect any TV or other equipments from India which have rounded pins. How have you guys connected the equipments to the TV?

you need to buy an iec power cord with 3pin plug for the ups and then buy iec jumper cords or a power strip with iec male pin input for connecting the load(tv etc). someone had posted links here, look for it here

MX components sells a adaptor that converts the IEC type C20 connector to the indian round 2pin/and flat pin socket, meaning you connect any 2 or 3 pin iindian round plug or the US versions,it costs about Rs60.
