The Movies I Liked

Jason Stathams The Expendables, Death Race, Transporter and The Italian Job are the best action movies that I have seen so far and he is the only actor who has multiple skills such as martial art and car stunts.

I love Jason Statham. But you should see his Crank-2. Real trash of a movie. I don't understand why he acted in it at all. really disappointing.

Cheers

Drive (2011) - IMDb

A mysterious man who has multiple jobs as a garage mechanic, a Hollywood stuntman and a getaway driver seems to be trying to escape his shady past as he falls for his neighbor - whose husband is in prison and who's looking after her child alone. Meanwhile, his garage mechanic boss is trying to set up a race team using gangland money, which implicates our driver as he is to be used as the race team's main driver. Our hero gets more than he bargained for when he meets the man who is married to the woman he loves.

Haywire [2011]

Haywire (2011) - IMDb

A very good Action/Thriller movie. The story is fair enough and finally a woman (Gina Carano) who actually knows how to throw a punch and kick some butt instead of crappy fighters like Jolie. With barely a couple of movies under her belt, Gina Carano has done a good job. She looks good and her martial arts is fantastic. The fight scenes are convincing and well staged with some good chase scenes in the streets of Barcelona and on the rooftops of Dublin. Cinematography and Sound mixing is very well done.

Cheers.

Saw two movies over the last two days with strangely similar themes.

1. This is a Tamil movie titled 'Thadaiyaara Thaaka'. This title loosely translated means to overcome obstacles. If you had seen Yudhdham Sei (Make War) and liked it, you will like this movie also.

As is explained in the link, the story revolves around a 5th class fail who has run away from his village to make a life for himself in Chennai. How he gets caught with a powerful gang and how he manages to extricate himself is the movie. Though this may sound like a regular masala movie, the theme has been rendered well with nice twists and turns.

2. The second one I just finished seeing is Edison. When a convicted murderer says 'Thank You' to a cop, a young reporter and writer, Josh, gets curious. The curiosity lands him into deep trouble with the city's H.A.R.T - a police department that is a law unto themselves. How he, his editor, and the city's investigator get together to handle threats to their life and clean the city is shown in a gripping portrayal by some superb actors such as Kevin Spacey, Justin Timberlake, and Morgan Freeman.

Cheers

"Ondanondu Kaaladalli" - A cult Classic movie in Kannada

Ondanondu Kaladalli - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Girish Karnad does a wonderful job as a director. The plots used, dialogues and sound engineering is gripping. Shankar Nag's ( director of Malgudi days )first film and acting comes natural to him. The story slowly grows upon, and the best part is climax. Nicely rendered. Shankar Nag and Sunder Krishn Ars , both have justified their roles.

Watched Pearl Harbor on blu ray and I must admit that it is worth watching compared to the dvd. Now, I feel that I should have had picked up the blu ray first and skipped the dvd. Its never late though....

The audio part was rocking and the effects of the war on the pearl was fantastic. It makes you feel as if you are involved in the war. A great movie in blu ray to my collection.

The Hunter (2011) - IMDb

The Tasmanian Tiger is not extinct. There is rumours of sitings of the last one. Martin is hired by a mysterious biotech company 'Red Leaf' to hunt down the last tiger. But he is not the only one after the cat. This is a good movie with good visuals of Tasmanian wilderness.

A few movies I've caught up on recently...

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) - IMDb - I liked the reboot. Nothing new but still done differently and its a change from Tobey's previous trilogy.

The Avengers (2012) - IMDb - Full of heroes and the movie is a blast. Never mind the logic or your mind... leave it at home, grab lots of popcorn and sit down for lots of explosions and FX for a couple of hours.

Thor (2011) - IMDb - Saw this after The Avengers and I liked it... but then I like anything with Natalie Portman in it.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - IMDb - Same as above... caught up on it after The Avengers.

Two more romantic movies that I caught up with and liked are...

No Strings Attached (2011) - IMDb - Natalie Portman again. Ashton Kutcher seems to have made a successful career with such movies and he does not disappoint here either.

Friends with Benefits (2011) - IMDb - Similar story but this time with Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake.

Oh My Friend (2011) - IMDb
Recently saw this movie named Oh My Friend, the story is very diff to routine masala / melodramatic movies. Story based on a friendship between a boy and girl. Great acting by Siddharth and Shruthi Hassan.

I am not sure if it would be right to mention TV series here but nonetheless, I would recommend White Collar series - story of two guys investigating white collar crimes an FBI agent and his assistant who was master thief in past. Character of Mozzie is amazing ! The series is running with fourth season now.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - IMDb

Saw this movie in the theater. Good action and nice twists. The Bane is good but not comparable to the joker. The scenes are sometimes slower. The story manages to connect all three and give a nice conclusion to the last of Nolan's efforts with Batman.

Great work Christopher Nolan, my fav director in Hollywood.

Saw The Hunter starring Willem Dafoe.

I have just three words for this movie - What a Movie!!! To tease your appetite, I shall show below an extract from the book written by Julia Leigh. Needless to say, Dafoe's performance is extra ordinary!

"Already a hit in Australia, Leigh's flawed but exciting debut describes the deadly search for the fabled, and perhaps extinct, Tasmanian tiger, aka the thylacine. A mysterious man who is identified to the reader only as M assumes the identity of "Martin David, naturalist" and arrives at the filthy, disheveled house of depressed Lucy Armstrong, whose husband, Jarrah, a naturalist and bioethics expert, recently disappeared on the plateau. Lucy's home becomes the base for M's treks into the wilderness, ostensibly to study the habits of Tasmanian devils. In fact, and in secret, M works for a biotech company. His mission: to secure genetic material from what may be the world's last remaining thylacine, reportedly sighted on the plateau. M must hide his true occupation from Lucy and her lonely children, Sass and Bike, as well as from the National Parks researchers and the suspicious local townspeople. Sydney-based Leigh shifts ably between M's laconic narration and third-person storytelling. With the exception of a superfluous (and clumsily handled) romantic subplot, the novel's events are compelling, drawing the reader deep into M's inner jungle. Leigh is most effective when writing in M's voice, exploring his relationship to the wilderness, his tracking expertise and his ability "to think like a true and worthy predator." Fans of Peter Matthiessen will find Leigh darker and sometimes less ambitious, but effective in similar ways, as M's obsession with the hunt drives this moody work by a gifted new author to its chilling conclusion."

See this movie if you can get your hands on it. I am ordering for the book.

Cheers

The Hunter is indeed a really good movie. I loved the way they played the 'aloneness' and (way of life of) self-reliance of the lone hunter against the 'aloneness' and the forced self-reliance of the last Tasmanian devil. The hunter and the hunted were essentially the same beasts, so to speak.

The romantic sub-plot as indicated by the review Venkatcr quoted is indeed a bit pointless, but perhaps it served to emphasis the fact that the Hunter has been a beast without a mate or offspring (just like the Tasmanian Devil), and perhaps longing for the companionship that they could provide. I felt that this emphasized the similar state of the Tasmanian Tiger (without any hope for either a mate or offspring), and also provided the justification for the action of the Hunter towards the end.

My only complaint with the movie was that the part where the Hunter himself was being hunted was not fleshed out well enough.

I also loved the movie for the truly beautiful visuals. Australia is a beautiful country!
