The Movies I Liked

Nowadays premise or story for action is not there in movies. Compared to modern 'action packed violence' old movies would be considered puny. Following I liked when I was young but no longer enjoy them as much. Occasional glimpses is sufficient for me. I am not that old mind you :)

here are some trailers.
Dogs of War
Wild Geese
Where Eagles Dare
The French Connection
Shaft
the poseidon adventure
The great escape
Monkey shines
Coma
Wait until dark
The Great Train Robbery
Tough Guys
The untouchables

Do watch 'Tough Guys' movie. A humor action movie for 'old times' sake.

Will there be a Steve mcqueen, Audrey Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock, Kirk Doughlas and so many others of 70s calibre people these days ?

Regards

Bastille Day (2016) - IMDb - Kind of disappointing fare that ends up as another lame excuse for an action romp.

Good idea, but the execution lets it down. Idris Elba is an amazing actor, but does not cut it very well as an action hero. Better left to Liam Neeson to play the old action hero I'd say.

Give it a miss...

The Great Train Robbery

This was one of my favorite once, until I read the original novel from MC. The movie didnt do real justice to the novel, and I feel has killed the novel to an extend.

Jason Bourne (2016) - IMDb - I liked it. Has all the good stuff like hard action, great car and bike chases... and of course Matt Damon kicking ass as Jason Bourne.

Not as good as the original trilogy... but better than the Jeremy Renner The Bourne Legacy. A definite watch for action fans and thrill ride seekers.

Re: The Movie I Liked

Sam, I think he has used the word in the modern day usage meaning overuse or proliferation. Terms like food porn, word porn, data porn are being used today. The fact that he has used it as such, I would hazard a guess he wouldn't have heard of torture porn [emoji2]

yea ..lol you might be right :), but with the kind of movie marathon he goes, I was expecting other wise you know ...:)

Reading is a joy. I have not read the novel. Me not much of a reader either, just some Arthur C. Clarke short stories, very few classic novels (have read Animal Farm, never completed City of joy there were many my dad had but have not read them) but I had/have lots of books on science.

Untouchables reminded me something interesting.
The Original
Copy Cats
and
Hilarious

You would be the first one I know who would say that, else everyone swears on the 80s action.(inclusind me). I think you have missed some really good 80/90s action flick. take an example T2, even though was a breakthrough in CGI, is raved for its action coz of the actually shot action scenes.

Its not only the scale of action that counts, its the sense of reality as well that makes a scene great. Assuming you already must have seen ... Die hard/Predator/Robocop/Total Recall (original) ...ect, let me give my list of great action movies of 80/90s

1. Lethal Wepon 1,2 and 3
2. True Lies
3. The Killer
4. Hard Boiled
5. Mad max(1979)
6. Ben-Hur (Chariot race, even though it came in 59, this race will leave you gasping for air)
7. HEAT
8. Assault On Precinct 13 (1976)
9. reserved
10. reserved

Will fill 9 and 10 shortly, Also I am excluding the HK action movies, the jackie Chan style, coz that would mean another set of top 10, and would easily surpass the hollywood top 10 of even the 80s.:):):)

@sam9s...

^^^ and its not just the action alone... but the movies oozed tension. There is so much tension build up in Predator and then a twig snaps and everybody is on edge. Ditto for Die Hard... one man battling against an army... but also battling an intelligent villain... like a game of chess and with tension build up. Aliens is another prime example... both the original and the James Cameroon version... Ripley battling the alien is as much mental as physical.

Its not just in action... even horror has lost its way with so much CGI and FX. Good horror actually relies on bulding up tension and does not scare with CGI or scary monsters... but so many movies do it wrong these days. Consider The Conjuring movies... hardly any CGI or hardly even anything scary is shown much.... but its scary because of again the way the tension is built up, the background score, etc. No sudden camera movements, no gimmicks, no CGI, or scary faces... simple horror that builds up without giving you an outlet.

Movie making is an art... sadly losing with all the CGI, SFX, comic book heroes, etc.... but still there is hope considering our generation gave us Quentin Tarantino.

The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015)
The story of the life and academic career of the pioneer Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan, and his friendship with his mentor, Professor G.H. Hardy.

Very nice movie.. A great mathematician, who passed away in his very early life.. had he lived for some more time, we would have had the world so envious..

My work place was Ramanujan IT Park, Chennai for sometime.. I was in Littlewood block and there were Hardy tower and others.. I didn't realise what these names were then..

But now i see they are the ones who helped Ramanujan in his life in England and hence the names..:)

Criminal (2016) - IMDb - Pretty decent action flick.

Entertaining fare, but solely elevated by Kevin Costner's performance as a sociopath who starts to regain his humanity after a brain transplant. Worth a watch for Costner's performance... who seems on a roll in his 2nd or 3rd innings.
