Voltage issues in power supply/Inverters

i have been advised a CVT over a servo stab. or a UPS, for audio apps.

a UPS is fine for computers, where a shut down time window is essential to avoid loss of data.

a servo stab. is typically for household appliances, to avoid/address fluctuations, where power cuts don't matter (no data).

Is there specific advice on CVT's (vendor, model etc) ? What are Pros / Cons to help guide the choice between CVT and Servo stab

Is a souped up 2 KVA servo stabilizer the ideal answer from an A/V equipment protection standpoint ?

I am a liitle surprised at statements on this thread stating that people have seen improvements in video quality after connecting their Plasma TV's to a servo stab ..would it be reasonable to expect performance improvements in audio and video quality by using a servo stab ?

The country's most reputed brand is 'Bhurji' (to the best of my understanding). However, regional players are/may also be active. There is a lot of information on various forums on power quality playing a role in audio and video performance, specifically hi-fi equipment.

There you are Ashokji, 'Bhurji' the best kept secrete of all times. Very few people know about it and those who it are on the 'Bhurji''s never ending long long waiting list. Products are way expensive and sort of over kill for HiFI so not recommended.

Avoid CVT for any Power Audio equipment. (Integratedamps, power amps, AVRs etc) The "Ferro" or CVT works on the principle of Saturated Core. This is once again a transformer sort of thing, which creates a magnetic field, or flux, that is a function of the (input)voltage applied . This magnetic flux is more or less proportional to the voltage EXCEPT at the high or low voltage extremes. At these extremes, a relatively large change in voltage will result in little change in the magnetic flux, with the high voltage extreme described as being the "saturation" region.

CVT can provide good noise attenuation and are very reliable (as there are no moving parts or any electronic circuit to fail)

On the downside, CVTs can add significant harmonic distortion (Do you want them ride on your music?), have a serious problem with high in-rush current (And we know our amps draws a heavy in rush current), have very poor efficiency at less than full load (our power requirement varies) and tend to be very hot and noisy in operation. Say NO to CVT.

sir, i do not understand what you mean here.

bhurji is possibly the largest exporter of CVT's in the world! they even export to the US!!

the owner of the company is a fanatic for quality, is a thorough gentleman to boot and would arguably never cheat anyone, market conditions and stresses notwithstanding.

and, why do we refer to overkill when speaking of hifi. if u see costs of P S Audio, etc., bhurji is peanuts!!!

Sir, I will agree to your suggestion on efficiency and hum/noise.

A CVT, by virtue of its design, is 85% efficient (approx. 15% heat, etc., loss).

Secondly, owing to the large transformers therein, there is an avoidable hum.

Consequently, there are CVT usage best practices, viz.,

1. Try and install the CVT in a room/area other than where the audio eqpt. is, to avoid the irritating hum.
2. Try and keep the CVT atleast 3m away from the audio eqpt. to avoid harmonic distortions.
3. Try and keep the CVT in a well ventilated area to dissipate the heat generated.

I looked at the site, but as Cranky said, it does not move beyond the home page.

Well down south, Audire also makes excellent power conditioning equipment. Audire's Dr. Chandrashekaran has been making power conditioning equipment for the health industry for a long time, and Sharath has taken that and tuned it for the audio industry.

The only issue with all this, when we identify a good product, how do we make it available across the country to those who are interested? Transportation? Logistics?

Cheers
