What to buy?

So u are looking for proper bookshelves + amp + sub or a soundbar with sub... Recently on my quest for a 5.1 set I came across a jbl soundbar with a wireless sub... It was pretty impressive for its 30k price quote that the dealer gave me... I listened to it @ sharper image, worli... Also Polk has a couple soundbars in the 27k-43k range... Chk them out... Polk has a reputation for good value for money sound...

i suggest a norge/sonodymne amp and a pair of wharfe 9 or sonodyne bookshelves.....best system you can have...

Hi Prosenjit,
I am also in the process of buying a audio system. My knowledge is very limited and to the search that i have been doing for the last one month. I have a fix on the speakers - Wharfedale. But not sure about 9.6 or 10.6. I am also not sure about the amp. Confused between 5.1 and a 2.1. But if it is 2.1, i will go for Norge. My budget is around 60K and can stretch another 5K. Can you pls help?
Magesh.

you live in mumbai,mr kix from pune is selling his old onkyo Tx-Ds747 reciver at only 7.5k....well it doesnot have hdmi..but has pre outs which modern even 70k avrs dont have...(more higher do have).....can consider it.its super vfm as it do have optical/coax input...so can easily connect from a blu ray players or dvd players optical/coax...and if you add a 15k int amp from sonodyne or norge(as the avr has pre outs all channel!!!!!)....just before the fronts...well yours will be a killer system....however buying used stuff is completly your decision.....

Hi All on HFV,

I have been following HFV for a while and I must say that am flabbergasted with the kind of knowledge, people have about audio components, systems and sound quality. I am not an audiophile and have been listening to very ordinary sounds, so far....but here I'm seeking advice from all the wise folks to suggest me a good 2.1 set-up, to enhance my HDTV output and listen to my favourite music. What are the best options available in Delhi/NCR. My Budget is a stretch 30K.:)

Hi there, my two cents:

I've always found a 2.1 setup sound very disjointed and weird, especially for music. You should try hearing some entry level floor-standers which might fit your budget. The speakers themselves will be more expensive than bookshelf speakers but remember, decent sub-woofers are expensive too, so all in all, the price will be the same. The advantage will be that you will get a nice cohesive sound with enough bass to satisfy you that will sound good for both music and movies. The disadvantage will be that you will lose some clarity but to get that kind of clarity, you will have to at least double your budget anyway, so this is a good starting option.

There's a thread on this site that gives you all the prices for speakers.

I am thinking of buying a audio to connect to my HDTV. I want clarity in dialouges of the movie and good sound, confused should i get good 2.1 system or average 5.1 system, my budget is around Rs 50000. I play my media, music as well as movies from WD media player. And i download the contents from net which are mostly 1080p videos. I shortlisted Wharfdale 10.5 FS and any other good stereo amplifier to go with it Also i considered Sonodyne FS . or Energy RC Micro and denon 1513 AVR, if i go for 5.1 system. Also i am considering Paradigm cinema ct and Energy take classic 5.1 but that one i have to get from ebay site , Do not know the trustworthiness of Internationale e bay shopping site. can you suggesst me which system should i get to experience best sound quality and over all enjoyment for the money spent.

okay from wdtv....
do it have optical/coax output?
if yes you can consider the old onkyo......txds747

otherwise

for 50k start with

denon 1612/1912 or onkyo equivalent
for speakers try many(wharfe, sono, polk,Q,paradigm etc and take what you like....
dont buy a 5.1 pack..you will lose quality
get a centre and 2 fronts
later add sub and rear dipole....

well in your case stereo amp and a pair of good fs may be a problem as wdtv analogue sound output quality wont be that good...so a bad source wont do much in spite of having a costly amp and speakers...plus...i dont know whetrher wdtv can send video via hdmi and audio via analogue simultaneosly.....??no idea sorry....
so a avr rathar than amp is good for your case i think........

downloaded contents play a role in audio....good quality is needed dts/ac3 audio etc..like 5 Gb min etc..

ebay india/ebay us/global.....very very trustworthy....no problem at all......but these products are not cheap online....better buy them from store unless import..import is cheaper.......

Thx for the reply, well I need to mention that WD Live has both kind of connection, Optical, coaxial as well as HDMI, I have connected it to my TV through HDMI and audio, video go simultaneously through HDMI output. Now what can i do, can you suggest please. Also the movies I download have DTS or Dolby Digital sound. There sizes go up to 14 gb or 10 gb, sometimes 5 Gb. the WD liveplayer plays them in DTS audio or dolby digital. As i can see very nice sound with proper effects on the native speakers o TV but there quality is not very good.

okay.
then avr is good for your case than int amp.
follow the previous mail to start with a 50k budget.

also can you confirm do your media plyer have bitstreaming capability..check audio settings...

anyway if dont have a problem to buy used gear can try the onkyo tx747(non hdmi) at 7.5k only..
it dont have hdmi but do have coax and optical.....so pretty well value for money.also it is being sold in pune, very nearby of mumbai....
as you play downloaded meterials ...90 percent of them are dts only or DD only....so a optical or coax is enough for 5.1 channel carry....
so non hdmi avr is enough......
even if you play a blu ray suppose in a blu ray player...you wont lose much..the dts hd ma will be downmixed to 6 channel Dolby digital......

now you think...

So i will buy a new AVR Denon and Whrfe speakers two Floor stands, will it be enough for now, if i add center speaker, woofer and surround speakers later on as I can not spend too much right now. I am thinking of Wharfedale Diamond 10.4 or something like that. can these two speakers play all the sounds of the movie or i will miss some sounds which are to be played by the center speaker and surrounnd speakers. If yes how can it play, in which way i have to connect ot to the AVR, and what if i listen to music with an AVR, will the quality will be very less or ok type. Please clarify about these points too. Or i should buy Paradigm Cinema ct 90 else, its a complete home theater package for around Rs 55000.

ok denon is good.
try 1612 or 1912...
now for speakers you demo and then decide which brand is to go for.
now what config....
see as you will later add a sub for bass managemant so bookshelf is equally good for you...fs is not mandatory..however its your choice if you do have a fancy for them....and have a large room more than 250 sq ft say...

why will you miss....go step by step....
get a centre and 2 fronts....yes centre is very imp as modern recordings..avr will throw max stuffs into centre channel...

later buy rear and sub...

or you can do..for movie only...just centre and sub....buy rest later..well its my personal choice..may not suit others....

5.1 packs are not of great quality..so a step by step is better...

@steverocking,

What is the size of your listening room/area. While FS look very impressive, they are overbearing in a room area smaller than 14x11. In such an area BS size is good enough.

You can go with L+R combination right now and you will get stereo effect only. I suggest that you start with L+C+R, i.e., add center right now. This way, you will enjoy movies more.

Step 2 will be to add sub-woofer. That will punch up the bass effects.

Step 3. You can add the rear surrounds. Now you are at 5.1 level.

Step 4. If your space permits, you can now add side surrounds. In this case you have upgraded to 7.1. This is of course if the AVR supports the combo.

Step 5. You can buy two small full range speakers and add then as front height (L+R). This is of course if the AVR supports the combo and you have a large listening area.

Paradigm CT-90 is also a good system and you will not regret the purchase. I am not very sure which is the best AVR that suits these speakers.

I have selected this for E bay global easy buy, Is it safe to buy that from there, it suits my budget. I am not having confidence to buy such a big amount item from global easy buy from e bay. What you can say about Energy take classic 5.1, it has got good reviews. Also Pioneer Spk-PK21BS package is also have good reviews. whats your take on these systems.
My order contain denon 1513 and energy take classic from Some seller electronic expo in Wayne NJ, USA. Is it safe bet.

eBay is generally safe for payment against delivery.
Thx both of you, friends, for giving me good technical guidance in making a decision to select the components for the HT system. So will buy an AVR along with Wharfedale Diamond 10.4 or 5 along with center speaker of wharfedale too. My room size is huge, its L shape room, about 22'*15' rectangle along with 15*18 other arm of the room, So its kinda huge. One other important query. Should i buy it from HiFi Mart or from some other dealers as I do not have the idea of the prices of these speakers the physical dealers may fleece me when i buy from them. Are the items received from hifimart are of good quality as well as good price. Sugeest me please. Thx

hifimart is completly safe and good to buy.you dirsctly talk to hifimart peoples over phone for further clarification......
for price compare it to yur local dealer and then decide

Hi Prosenjit, I cannot thank you enough for educating me so much with the available options in my budget. Have one more query. Am being offered the Polk Audio surround bar and a wireless subwoofer for 30K, is it a good deal and more importantly, is the system worth? Can you also advise me on what is the kind of after sale we have for Polk Audio in India, in case anything goes bad?
