Best DVD player iwth USB

Are any of these softwares free? Also - will it make any difference if I do quick format? I have already taken backup of all my files.

I bought this HDD for INR 4300 from Lamington road, Mumbai. It works beautifully.

No a quick format sort of erases all data . But a format rewrites the table structures . Since you are changing your FS I would advise you to do a proper format. Hope this helps..

thanks, so coming back to the question on software, which one is free and relatively easier to use? If it can work on Vista, better, else XP is fine too.

None of the softwares are free.

However I think if you search the link you may get a way of using the Windows inbuilt tools to do the formatting .

Boss if you are using vista. Why dont u simply , right click , go to Format and chose File System as FAT 32 and allocation as Default Allocation Size. You lose all data but you are ok with that. 100% FREEEEE !!! :yahoo:

Wouldnt the default allocation be 40 GB?

Besides, Vista doesnt support FAT32, it gives some new format called 'exFAT'. I dont see FAT32 as option in Vista.

Vista does support FAT32. In your case it is not showing because the drive is of size greater than 32GB. For any drive > 32GB, you will get NTFS and FAT64 (exFAT) as options.

But do note that if you format a drive > 32GB of type FAT32 using any other tool like swiss knife, vista will still recognize and show you all the files. Just that it refuses to format such a big drive.

@Phantom, you are right, it wouldnt allow formatting it on XP as well if beyond 32GB.

I was able to use HP-USB utility to format this to FAT32 on XP without any issues. I am very happy!

Now the next step is to fill this with avi, vobs, data files, mp3s and try it on Philips 5996.

btw - is there a restriction on the number of files that 5996 will read? (like the LG one?). also, am I supposed to store the files in bunches of 8-10/per directory, instead of piling all in root folder?

Here is an update from my side. I have an Archos 605 wifi 80 gb (google it and u will find the device I am talking about) which i had got from the USA. It has the capability of being used as a HDD if required. Currently My Archos has more than 3000 songs and approx 15-20 movies. LG faced no problem in reading/playing the songs/movies when IO connected the Archos in HDD mode which is good news for me atleast !

Does your sony have digital ins ? Then you can use either the coaxial or the opticals audio outs to connect to your hifi. You will be needing separate specialized cables for that.

If the sony has a 5.1 in you need to connect 6 cables one each for each channel from the DVD to hifi.

If it has a simple line in then you just connect the red and white cable to the corresponding red and white line in of your hifi.

Wow a DV 388 for Rs 3k is a steal .

Isnt the philips one also a steal? Considering it gives you

a. Upscaling
b. No limit on number of files that can be played
c. VOB file support
d. DTS encoding as well (along with DD)

Its retailing at 5K in Croma.

LOL ! Ok Phillips at 5k is a steal too ! :D

But apart from the above the USB 2.0 THINGY is what really interests me in a Phillips.

Hi Every Body:)

I am from Chennai and new to the forum. I have gone through all the posts so far and the views expressed are quite informative and enlightening.

As it comes out of the discussions so far, Philip 5996 is the best DVD Player with USB Connectivity. However, I have 2 issues here:

1. I have read in a review that 5996 doesn't support XVID. Since many of the downloaded files are XVID coded, will it not be a problem?

2. Philips gives 6 months warranty and its service record (at least here in Chennai) is not very good. So is 5996 durable enough to justify its price?

I hope some of you can enlighten me on this.

Further, which is the most recommended LCD TV to go with it (for me a 32" on a moderate budget would be okay). Also if one has to go for 5.1 speakers, is philips recommended, or some other brand to go with 5996 (my budget is moderate, but I would prefer some good speakers suitable to a 12 x 12 bedroom).

Well i got it for Rs 2800 way back in November 08, so dunno whether this price is a steal or not.

But surely it is a good price compared to what others have been buying, another factor for price variation is that this model was being offered free with the tv and many buyers didn't take the player and the dealers gave them discount on the same, so the price variation is huge for this model as the dealers who kept the players are clearing them off.

But Dushie I think you bought the 388 without the HDMI cable if I am not wrong!
