the hdmi issue I faced seems to be because of the 5996 player. I connected to older version of philips 5986 to the projector and it is working fine again.
Right now not sure if it is the player, or some dust into the hdmi port. I have not used this player much on hdmi since I purchased it. I think I wasted my money. Not sure what is the warranty etc and I have lost the bill as well.
Edit - Seems 5996 is working fine too. Sfter being convinced that my projector and cabling doesn't have an issue, last night I decided to put the 5996 back into the system. After blowing into the hdmi port and reconnecting the hdmi cable, the issue seems to be fixed. Will watch more stuff on this player to further confirm everything is ok.

Have you compared the two players on the Philips site ? The site is a good place to start !

I got one for my MIL and using it with a Panasonic 32" LCD TV via HDMI. PQ is pretty good for the DVD/Divx rips I tested on it and it has USB 2.0 and movies/music played via USB too are pretty good and responsive.

i checked and found that 3996 does not have DTS . and it has coaxial output . will it be compatible with my creative t6060 5.1 speakers? also it does not have optical digital output . do i need that? thanks
Does your creative t6060 5.1 speakers have optical input? most likely not!
If not and if you are not going to use an external DAC , then you don't need that.

Frnd, BD players are terribly expensive nowadays. You don't get a player for less than 30,000 odd. Even the Oppo when and if available, will be that price officially in India. Last time I looked around they were selling Panasonic and Pioneer BD Players at around 30,000 in the gray market !!
In addition Blu-Ray discs are also expensive. I reckon it will take at least another 12 to 18 months before the use of Blu-Ray discs become common in India.
That is a long time to keep your HR system idle, is it not?

All Philips products do not have digital optical, they come with only digital coaxial. For it to be compatible with your Creative T6060 you will need cables that are with RCA connectors at one end and have stereo pins at the other end and these should also be Y cables i.e. 2 RCA pins at one end and 1 stereo pin at the other end since that's the only input your Creative T6060 will take. Provided you get these cables it should work fine.

To add to what Venkatji has said, if you have the money i.e. the 30K then go for a PS3 instead. Makes much more sense and is firmware upgradeable too.

I have recently bought Philips 5996 from Croma, Bangalore.
Its just been a little while and I watched only one movie with that, the picture quality looks good, still dont have clear idea on how it does the upscaling and all - yet to check all the features.
One thing I was disappointed was it doesnt have Optical cable. It has got coaxial output only and they dont even provide cables. I'm yet to buy a pair of good quality HDMI cables (still searching). The HDMI cable that came with my xbox, doesnt seem to work with the DVD player and AVR I have so I have to buy a couple of them to use with DVDP > AVR > TV.
Also going to check the current firmware version and shall update with latest one accordingly.
I have got following devices and really need help on coonnecting them - I may be taking sometime before I set the complete thing up and running as I will be out of bangalore for around 3-4 weeks starting mid February.
1> TV - Sony Bravia - KF55E200A (one HDMI port) - used for Sat, Gaming, Movies in that order; I may use it for movies more frequently now as I got AVR recently
2> Xbox 360 Elite - Only HDMI output
@ I dont see other ports that I can use for sound seperately (I'm in impression that seperate sound output to AVR should be better than the integrated HDMI where my AVR just does HDMI Audio pass thru - not technically sure on this thing though) is this possible?
@I have not been able to hook up my xbox using AVR yet, shall give it a try once I have enough HDMI cables to connect them all

I think your AVR will not be able to process audio over HDMI - which means for each HDMI source, you have to connect the audio cable (coax, optical or RCA) separately.
Generally - Audio over HDMI should in fact be better than audio over coax, optical as the hdmi spec has larger bandwidth and can transfer larger number of channels than compressed dts or dolby or 2 channel PCM.

I hope you are talking about composite video connection?
Where did you take the AVR out from?
There could be a "monitor out" in your AVR - try connecting that to your TV.

I guess I got what you are saying. I gave the STB input to the CBL section on my AVR, but at the same time, I was using my Xbox HDMI cable to connect "AVR OUT <> TV in" and I guess the cable comes with Xbox doesnt work there (my guess).
I should try composite out (video) from STB to AVR and then another composite cable (or HDMI whenever I get one working with my AVR <> TV) between AVR and TV should work.
I shall give this a try

Manju also look at philips they have a new series out 5996 , which comes with USB 2 port, u can play mp3, avi and photos through portable hdd or thumb drive, it has lot of good reviews too, do check out the same
hi , DUSHIE ,i got this player phillips 5996 for my second set up .i bought this on recomendation from a sales person in modern world ,i have connected it to panasonic PV8D plasma tv via HDMI (free with the player) set to 720p ,this player is really good ,upscales to 1080p ,and the best part is, it reads all kinds of discs unlike the lgs,samsung as far as disc compatibility i thot the pioneer was the best but this model from philips even beats out the pioneer

It seems to have, in the eyes of WhatHiFi, lost out on non technical issues. According to WhatHiFi, the cons of the players are, 'Unfavourable exchange rates; competition from Blu-ray Disc players; looks a bit cheap.'
None of these points matter as far as the core of system is concerned - delivering excellent pictures and sound.
Our own Vinod_David seems to have chided WhatHiFi. Good for you Vinod !!
Anyhow this product is not available in the market anymore. So new buyers should look at other products.

Still nt found the diff between philips dvp 3996 and 5996. The only diff. i got is that 5996 has karaoke .. But 3996 is costing me rs 3600 wid hdmi cable and 5996 is costing me 4500 rs widout hdmi cable .. why is so much diff.. plz guide
