Best DVD player iwth USB

the hdmi issue I faced seems to be because of the 5996 player. I connected to older version of philips 5986 to the projector and it is working fine again.
Right now not sure if it is the player, or some dust into the hdmi port. I have not used this player much on hdmi since I purchased it. I think I wasted my money. Not sure what is the warranty etc and I have lost the bill as well.

Edit - Seems 5996 is working fine too. Sfter being convinced that my projector and cabling doesn't have an issue, last night I decided to put the 5996 back into the system. After blowing into the hdmi port and reconnecting the hdmi cable, the issue seems to be fixed. Will watch more stuff on this player to further confirm everything is ok.

does anyone here own a dvp3996?

I got one for my MIL and using it with a Panasonic 32" LCD TV via HDMI. PQ is pretty good for the DVD/Divx rips I tested on it and it has USB 2.0 and movies/music played via USB too are pretty good and responsive.

i checked and found that 3996 does not have DTS . and it has coaxial output . will it be compatible with my creative t6060 5.1 speakers? also it does not have optical digital output . do i need that? thanks

dont buy a dvd player now wait and then buy a BD player.

Frnd, BD players are terribly expensive nowadays. You don't get a player for less than 30,000 odd. Even the Oppo when and if available, will be that price officially in India. Last time I looked around they were selling Panasonic and Pioneer BD Players at around 30,000 in the gray market !!

In addition Blu-Ray discs are also expensive. I reckon it will take at least another 12 to 18 months before the use of Blu-Ray discs become common in India.

That is a long time to keep your HR system idle, is it not?

Cheers

All Philips products do not have digital optical, they come with only digital coaxial. For it to be compatible with your Creative T6060 you will need cables that are with RCA connectors at one end and have stereo pins at the other end and these should also be Y cables i.e. 2 RCA pins at one end and 1 stereo pin at the other end since that's the only input your Creative T6060 will take. Provided you get these cables it should work fine.

To add to what Venkatji has said, if you have the money i.e. the 30K then go for a PS3 instead. Makes much more sense and is firmware upgradeable too.

added Philips 5996 recently

Hello Guys,

I have recently bought Philips 5996 from Croma, Bangalore.
Its just been a little while and I watched only one movie with that, the picture quality looks good, still dont have clear idea on how it does the upscaling and all - yet to check all the features.

One thing I was disappointed was it doesnt have Optical cable. It has got coaxial output only and they dont even provide cables. I'm yet to buy a pair of good quality HDMI cables (still searching). The HDMI cable that came with my xbox, doesnt seem to work with the DVD player and AVR I have so I have to buy a couple of them to use with DVDP > AVR > TV.

Also going to check the current firmware version and shall update with latest one accordingly.

I have got following devices and really need help on coonnecting them - I may be taking sometime before I set the complete thing up and running as I will be out of bangalore for around 3-4 weeks starting mid February.

1> TV - Sony Bravia - KF55E200A (one HDMI port) - used for Sat, Gaming, Movies in that order; I may use it for movies more frequently now as I got AVR recently

2> Xbox 360 Elite - Only HDMI output
@ I dont see other ports that I can use for sound seperately (I'm in impression that seperate sound output to AVR should be better than the integrated HDMI where my AVR just does HDMI Audio pass thru - not technically sure on this thing though) is this possible?
@I have not been able to hook up my xbox using AVR yet, shall give it a try once I have enough HDMI cables to connect them all

3> TataSky STB - It has got only RCA output, doesnt have coax or optical for better sound or picture quality.
@ I'm looking for some economical upgrade on this front so I can get digital AV output from STB - suggest me on this point
@ As of now, I have not been able to get my AVR routing video signals to TV, I had connected only sound output to AVR and video I had to connect directly to TV to get things working
@ I dont know why it did not work when I connected video to AVR and AVR was not able to give it to TV - I may have missed something here - any suggestions welcome on this point

4> Onkyo 5105 - Again, waiting on cables so I can connect all devices like STB, DVDP, Xbox etc using AVR

@ Waiting on HDMI and 14 AWG cables - suggest good options available in Bangalore (I may get it from US if I find better options there)
@ Is there a way I can connect my STB in such a way where I can bypass it quickly while watching normal channels like news where I really dont need AVR and switch it back again while watching movies?
@ I have found Star Movies and few other channels have got good output, my PLII system really shows a big difference with good 5.1 effects while watching those channels
@ once the setup is done, I shall be using Audessy for auto configuration - I have not attempted this yet

5> Philips 5996 - Yet to get the HDMI cable

@ I bought this one keeping rental DVDs in mind mainly, in case I go for bigflix or seventymm kind of thing
@ I will be connecting it using HDMI to AVR and then to TV - I will be using coax (only option) for sound - I guess thats max you can do here
@ Played one movie (VOB files); currently connected to AVR using normal RCA cables - the video output was very good even with the normal RCA
@ I found that the dialogues were not so clear compared to other sounds in movie, but it may be just the settings I have on my AVR and overall AVR is not yet fully configured
@ need to update firmware to latest one
@ The movie froze for a few seconds in between but I guess it was because it was trying to switch to the next VOB file automatically, thats the time it got frozen for a few seconds I guess, other wise plaing from USB pen drive was perfectly fine
@ I'm yet to connect my external Seagate HDD (powered) and see how it performs - shall post my experiance on that

6> Popcorhour A-110 NMT - (in wishlist for now - will decide based on how frequently I'm / I may be using some of the below features)

@ I may buy this one from US (considering they want charge custom duty if shipped to US and shipping will also be lesser compared to India)
@ Using this device for downloaded media will be a good option moving further - usage of torrents and streaming media across my home WLAN would be a good idea too
@ Streaming media using webservices from internet (I may need to upgrade my Broadband speed for this - less priority for now)
@ Optical output, which I dont have with my Philips 5996 - Can anyone tell me how much is the difference I'm going to notice between coax and optical sound output with my kind of setup?

Thanks
Ketan

I think your AVR will not be able to process audio over HDMI - which means for each HDMI source, you have to connect the audio cable (coax, optical or RCA) separately.
Generally - Audio over HDMI should in fact be better than audio over coax, optical as the hdmi spec has larger bandwidth and can transfer larger number of channels than compressed dts or dolby or 2 channel PCM.

Re: added Philips 5996 recently

I hope you are talking about composite video connection?
Where did you take the AVR out from?
There could be a "monitor out" in your AVR - try connecting that to your TV.

I guess I got what you are saying. I gave the STB input to the CBL section on my AVR, but at the same time, I was using my Xbox HDMI cable to connect "AVR OUT <> TV in" and I guess the cable comes with Xbox doesnt work there (my guess).

I should try composite out (video) from STB to AVR and then another composite cable (or HDMI whenever I get one working with my AVR <> TV) between AVR and TV should work.

I shall give this a try
thanks.

Manju also look at philips they have a new series out 5996 , which comes with USB 2 port, u can play mp3, avi and photos through portable hdd or thumb drive, it has lot of good reviews too, do check out the same :)

hi , DUSHIE ,i got this player phillips 5996 for my second set up .i bought this on recomendation from a sales person in modern world ,i have connected it to panasonic PV8D plasma tv via HDMI (free with the player) set to 720p ,this player is really good ,upscales to 1080p ,and the best part is, it reads all kinds of discs unlike the lgs, samsung as far as disc compatibility i thot the pioneer was the best but this model from philips even beats out the pioneer

Re: added Philips 5996 recently

STB output - composite video.
Not all AVRs convert composite to hdmi. Yours seem to have the same limitation. It will pass through HDMI video only for the HDMI sources and nothing else. Not very sure about your model, but it is my guess.

In fact, my onkyo doesn't covert composite to component.

So your HDMI cable that came with PS3 might still be working with AVR. I would suggest buy one cable less to start with, and buy another only if you are sure your existing cable doesn't work.

Whathifi gave 3 stars to Oppo-983H
980H scores 5star.

It seems to have, in the eyes of WhatHiFi, lost out on non technical issues. According to WhatHiFi, the cons of the players are, 'Unfavourable exchange rates; competition from Blu-ray Disc players; looks a bit cheap.'
None of these points matter as far as the core of system is concerned - delivering excellent pictures and sound.

Our own Vinod_David seems to have chided WhatHiFi. Good for you Vinod !!

Anyhow this product is not available in the market anymore. So new buyers should look at other products.

Cheers
