Best DVD player iwth USB

good decision.
I think I spent money on few extras on 5996

1. CD rip - it can rip CDs to my attached hdd. But bitrate is low, and lossless isn't an option. So useless for me. But for a lot of people it can be a real good feature as it doesn't need a comp to backup your CDs (though to much lower quality)

2. it said it can play windows media - but I haven't tried windows lossless on this player.

I think I thought a few more things as an advantage - not sure if those features are even usable.

regards

I have a Philips 59xx in one of the bedrooms. It has a USB and HDMI, but it struggles with a 4 GB USB drive. I wonder what it would do with a 500GB HDD. It took a few minutes to read a 1GB DivX Ultra file and display the top menu.

I don't think it ever read any lossless music formats. Even the pictures look significantly better when I connect the LCD TV directly with a laptop using the RGB cable.

Thanks,
Sharad

in my humble opinion, DivX 7 is releasing DivX Plus hardware this year. And that'll play even mkv and h264 files!!! so thats something exciting. waiting for that release.

Read about it here:

DivX 7 Plus

Existing hardware will not work with the same, as to play mkv and hd format, the processing and scaling chip would be upgraded , hence hardware changes will happen in the existing models, if it was a software update, everyone could have done it,

The pricing also will be an important factor where how much these players will cost will make a big impact

it wont be a software upgrade, i'm 100% sure of it.

moreover, it'll be a hardware called "DivX Pro". so no software can imitate that!

That is working as expected as usually the copied movies do not have the 5.1 channel audio. Same with music. It will play in 2.1 mode including sending the signal to the subwoofer.

Hi guys I am back after a long hibernation mode ! He He

Yes sir it can very well play AVI movies of USB . DVD movies( Ex: Dumping DVD movies onto a 8gb pendrive) can also be played but becomes a pain cause the DVD menu feature is not supported when played through pen drive.

Hi Illusion...
I'm buying a USB capable DVD player mainly for one reason, to play movies from USB pendrives. In this regard, can you please elaborate what exactly you meant by PAIN..please. I'm interested in LG DV388 or SAMSUNG DVD P480.
Anyone pls suggest which is a better choice (HDMI is not necessary now)...
Thanks

i'm having the dv388 model. (in my opinion, the samsung model is strict no-no for me.) let me tell u its drawbacks.

1. it is usb 1.1 version. so forget about playing usb mini hard disks. moreover, as its 1.1, the fast forwarding isnt quite good via usb.

2. the dvd player supports divx 3. for versions other than that, such as divx 6, only "play" mode is available. you cannot fast forward it.
however full support for xvid is available.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

in my opinion, if usb is your ultimate preference, as compared to a a dvd, i wouldnt suggest dv388. go for philips 5996 or 5986 or any other in the 3--- series, as it supports usb version 2.0 as well as full range of divx options.

however if you own an LCD, i would suggest going for the dv388 as hdmi upscaling to 1080p is absolutely stunning in this model. infact in my opinion its better than philips 5996.

select your product based on what you need.

(if you have a flexible budget of around 20K, i would recommend checking out Oppo dvd players as they are available in India now.)

When you dump a dvd onto a pendrive it even plays the Menu Files as video files. As there is no menu llnk available it becomes cumbersome to search for the right file !

Hi Folks,

This is my very first post to this website and hoping some of you would be able to help me out.

I bought a transcend 250 GB HDD to play movies directly from USB. And then I realize I need to convert NTFS to FAT32. I read that I need to use Swissknife, but that doesnt seem to work (all options are disabled when I run the software).

I tried this on XP on my friend's machine. My laptop has Vista installed. I am very desperate to convert my HDD to FAT32, please help/suggest/advice.

Thanks,
D.

Partition Magic does this. I've converted FAT32 to NTFS without loss of data, but not the other way around. BTW is loss of data an issue? Otherwise doing a fresh format with FAT32 seems a better option.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Loss of data is not an issue at all. Will Partition magic work on Vista?

I was going through another thread, and it recommends using HP-USB software.

Partition magic does create issues with vista. Partition magic was originally launched by a company called PowerQuest.Later on powerquest was taken up by Symantec/Norton and they really screwed up the product after that :( !!
If I were you I would use Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 . Powerful and Efficient tool to say the least. Please take a back up of all your data and do a clean format to say. Also please post the price and the performance of the HDD ;).

Are any of these softwares free? Also - will it make any difference if I do quick format? I have already taken backup of all my files.

I bought this HDD for INR 4300 from Lamington road, Mumbai. It works beautifully.

If loss of data is not an issue then why do you need additional s/w? Is the external HDD not showing up when connected to the PC or laptop? If it shows up just right click it and select format and that should do it. If you've already tried this and are encountering some problems let us know and post specific errors and we will be able to help.

Its 250GB, and the standard utility (that comes with XP) supports FAT32 for drives only upto 40GB. When I run this from command prompt, I get some error like 'volume too large'
