Best DVD player iwth USB

But Dushie I think you bought the 388 without the HDMI cable if I am not wrong!

Yes, i got it without the cable, as that box i got did not have any free hdmi cable included in it, but 5 months back i believe it was selling above 3.6 k .

Correcto. I got it for 3.5 k with cable around 5 months back. A local HDMI cable costs 800 bucks and a branded one a bit more ( the LG Guys were saying 1500 bucks but I seriously doubt it) so I think 3.5k is not a bad deal ! My LG cable is still with me in sealed condition. I am currently using Sony HDMi cable which is really good.

hmm so i got 388 for 3000 with hdmi cable(LG sealed)..
and i saw smwhat abt 5-6 movies, too many songs till now and m highly satisfied with it..five stars for clarity, upscaling, compatibility( any damn dvd, usb, most needed file formats),SOUNDS GOOD(DTS,DOLBY DIGITAL) and user frndly.. dont kno about hdd compatiblity(pls tell me illusion or dushie)..

so accrdin to me the most VFM player with upscaling and USb is LG dv388

Dasher, i am currently using my 200 gb, pata ide, external hard drive in a casing, i have formatted the same in Fat 32 format, till now i have not faced any issues in playing files of it, also i am using an old 40 gb 2.5" portable hdd which runs through the usb 1.1 port , haven't faced any issues with it also , i have both formatted in fat 32 partition, the lg will not be able to read different partitions so ensure that the primary partition is large enough to play all content and should be in Fat 32.

Only challenge i feel is when i have to copy files larger than 4 gb, due to fat 32 limitation it does not let me copy files larger than 4 gb on the hdd

It plays all the XVids. I filled my HDD with all the Xvids that I was unable to watch in any other Divx player (including the Philips DVP 642). But this one plays it like a breeze.

Warranty is less. but its international warranty and also if you noticed, it has 110-240 voltage input range. That means you can also pack it and take it globally (unlike any other DVD players). Warranty is also international and not just local. Also - DVD players hardly have any issues that you would need the warranty.

Hi Every Body:)

I am from Chennai and new to the forum. I have gone through all the posts so far and the views expressed are quite informative and enlightening.

As it comes out of the discussions so far, Philip 5996 is the best DVD Player with USB Connectivity. However, I have 2 issues here:

1. I have read in a review that 5996 doesn't support XVID. Since many of the downloaded files are XVID coded, will it not be a problem?

2. Philips gives 6 months warranty and its service record (at least here in Chennai) is not very good. So is 5996 durable enough to justify its price?

I hope some of you can enlighten me on this.

Further, which is the most recommended LCD TV to go with it (for me a 32" on a moderate budget would be okay). Also if one has to go for 5.1 speakers, is philips recommended, or some other brand to go with 5996 (my budget is moderate, but I would prefer some good speakers suitable to a 12 x 12 bedroom).

Prakash what is your budget ? Its very important in HiFiVision at least, cause we just love extending your budget :clapping: :ohyeah: !

hey illusion waitin for dv388 test

Nah cant do it today. Transferring of data in between partitions is damn slow. It will take around 1.5 hours more for me to transfer 200gb of data between the partitions. I will do it tomorrow morn if possible and post the results thereafter .

Hi,

Well, for Speakers my budget is between 10 and 20K and for 32" LCD TV, 30-40K. With a 10-20K budget, is it possible to look for wireless rear side speakers? Also, I wanted to be sure whether Philips 5996 supports XVID Coded AVI files.

Thanks for your response.

Phillips should support xvid files as it is one of the most commonly used formats today. Alternately you can take a pendrive , fill ti with xvid files and then demo the same in a Philips Showroom.

Ok now for the budget extending. Since you are already willing to spend 20k then I would advise you to add 5-7 k more and get a AVR reciever + DVD player combination. For AVR Receiver there are plenty of HTiB's out there by Yamaha, Sony and Onkyo. Demo them all and select as per your taste, make sure to carry your pendrive with your favorite songs and movies with you. The HTiB start at 20k onwards. Since there is a recession you can press the dealer for discounts.Go for the Onkyo or Yamaha entry range HTiB( Price at 23k I think). The Sony AVR stopped selling the receiver which I was using as I could tell you for sure that for beginners like us the avr is perfect. The new models as listed in their site dont appeal to me at all and are just too big for my taste. Add another 4k for your DVD player and you have a complete system for 27k. Believe me its worh the money you spend.

For the TV go for decent Samsung, Panasonic or or Sony . Our gurus here will help you out better.

Wireless rear speakers are not available in entry level Onkyo or Sony. But why do you need wireless rear speakers. The best way to go about is to hire an electrician and ask him to run the casing around the wall for the wires. All speakers should be wall mountable I think.

hmm go with philips 4750 or 3569(its the wooden i guess) so u'll get both nice 5.1 speakers and a very gud dvd player along with that..

why u hv decided 32" size particularly.. what is ur room size.. bcoz.. what room size permits,,bigger is better.. as u hv budget of 40k u can have 42" pv8 the best plasma if u spend another 2-3 thousand..and go to forum television thr u'll find ample info.

5996 plays all the Xvid files. As I stated yesterday as well, I have tested it myself with all the files that I was unable to play in my previous divx player (DVP 642)

Let me revise DVDp with usb-

1.Oppo980/ 983
2.Pio 610
3.CA DVD99,
4.Onkyo DV406
5.LG DV388
6.others can be from Philips
7.Yamaha too have model?

Hi,

Thanks for your comprehensive response. First of all, is it worth while to go for an AVR Receiver? What are its advantages over a decent 5.1 HT Speaker set? And in any case you have invest in Speakers. In the Sony HT Speakers, starting at 17.5K, I read that they are Wi-Fi ready. Wiring is a solution, but surely it disfigures your room.

Further in a Home theatre, how do you combine Music Playing. Presently, I play it from my pc which is connected with an old Sony Audio System, but the PC is in a Separate Room. I some times use WMA disks too, but it is not hassles free as you have to change disks, switch on TV and so on. There should be an easier way of playing music using Home Theatre.

Hi,

Thanks for your response. My room is about 12 x 12. I have chosen 32" because of the Wall Space available is restricted (as a bathroom door is cutting in to it). Don't you think 32" is big enough for viewing from a distance of 8-10 feet?

Prakash Dugar

wo wo wo... dont ruin ur home theatr pln by buyin sony 370 or 570 or777
its not gud at all very bassy.. trust me m using it right now.. but i hv no choice.. coz jst i bought pana 42"pv8..so after sm recovery m goin to buy jbl -harman kardan combo...
nd my viewing distance is 11 ft bt now i feel that my tv would hv 46":p
and for ideal viewing distance here is the chart.. 42 is nice fr u try 37 atleast
this is not right place to post but this will sort it out imm.

go for phillips 4750 or 3569..or onkyo 3105 both around 20k and philips is with nice dvd player
