2011 Samsung Plasma 3D PS51D550

Hi Prankey,

i was following the thread from the day it started for a good reviews from all the owners to finalize and pick up the one along with the price thread offered by you.

Clarifications required for me:

1. About the Image Retention
2. Power Consumption
3. 3D Playback using PS3 (Image Retention is the playing a game or movie by other sources MM Players Western Digital and others)

Please reply back in detail..

Thanks,
Jagadish.
1. Its a non issue in current plasma TVs. Infact several of us use Plasmas right from the days it was a big issue, still its not an issue for them.

2. Power consumption is around 200W depending on picture settings it can increase or decrease.

3. Image retention is a non issue in 3D due to continuously shifting edges and pictures! 3D is best for plasma TVs so if you run your plasma in 2D to 3D mode or 3D only, you could just forget about image retention. This applies to any kind of gaming and Video playback, broadcasts, DTH, etc.

Already done that. Answer given is d550 is a new 2011 model with latest firmware. Pls keep checking at the site ti check for new firmware.

So no help at all.

Tell them about the noise cancelling issue which is resolved in the latest UK firmware which has not yet been ported to India because of which you are still using a DEFECTIVE TV!

Thats what i did to which i was told to keep checking thier website as this is the latest firmware.

even after 400 hrs of watching tv some times i get ir, best to figure out is on u r tv and donot switch on u r set top box .but it goes away with few min of scrolling.

but one i got with reliance logo has faint a bit seem like it will never go away .

Directly plug in the HDD to the usb port of TV, it will play all files :)

I have a 1 TB HDD connected to PS51D550 via Samsung BD5500 bluray player through Onkyo amp, similar issue when playing 6GB prints from the HDD.

Audio n video are not in sync sometimes. Pausing playback for a second and then resuming solves the problem for next 30mts

As i have almost zeroed in on PS51d550 to be bought for exchange to my 3 yrs old samsung LCD Tv , while browsing , I stumbled upon this on AVForums

AVForums.com - View Single Post - Samsung PS51D550 Owners Thread

thought it would be helpful for advanced user. If i posted something out of rules , Please report this post.

-- Soon to be D550 Owner , unless i am inclined to other LCD/Plasma Tv`s

As pioneer 1985 requested it, I will share my settings.

Before you choose to copy them, consider these:
- It seems the panel-to-panel variation between 2011 Samsung TVs is relatively big.
- I used Limited Range RGB for the movie mode because my PC VGA card is simply unable to output unmolested YCC signals. YCC 4:2:2 output would be the best to use and Limited Range RGB should be similar but the calibration settings can be different for YCC signals.
- Using the Service Menu is relatively dangerous (you can brick the software of your mainboard and the only solution will be a replacement board because neither you, nor a Samsung service technician will be able to reprogram it). Of course, I can't take any responsibility for your Sevice Menu accidents...

--------

First of all, update your firmware to 1024 (or better, but later firmwares may change the behavior of the device and make these particular settings useless).

Put the TV into standby mode (turn it off with the remote but don't cut the power) and wait a few seconds.
Hit: Info Menu Mute Power in this order (it should be done relatively fast).

Change the model number from D550 to D7000 and do a Factory Reset (under the Options sub-menu).

(CAUTION: The renaming makes the internal media player unusable!)

Figure out your new HDMI configuration. Find a way to get the HDMI_1 label working (it is the HDMI_4 port physically).
I physically connected HDMI 1,2,4 and I can select 1,2,4 in the source menu (label_1=physical_4 -> this is where you should place your PC or game console, if any ; and 4=2, 2=empty_3, 3 is unavailable physical 1).

DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP:
Label your HDMI_1 as PC (Source, highlight HDMI1, hit Tools, Edit Name, select PC), select it and feed the TV with 1080p60 Full Range RGB signal on the HDMI_4 (physical) port. (The PC mode should be active -> only Standard and Entertainment modes are available.)

Put your TV into Standby mode and go back to the Service Menu again to make these changes:

Service Menu
- ADV/WB

- - ADC Results
0 0 0 0 0 0 221 221 221 11 11 11

- - White balance
128 128 128 128 128 128 128 128

Exit from the Service Menu with a Factory Reset (unless you want to make another custom changes, like disable AllShare which will be broken after the renaming anyway, or disable other redundant features like the ECO sensor -> these settings are only available after you hit Factory and 3Speed on a factory remote or you use ruSamsungTVCommunicator - these changes aren't necessary...).

Dial in these settings:
Sidenote: PC/Standard mode and the normal Movie mode have independent settings memories but different input/panel frequencies don't. I solved this problem by using two active (+1 inactive for the "HDMI cross-matching" workaround after the model renaming...) HDMI inputs: one for 60Hz PC, 24Hz + CS movies and 50Hz input signals (CS=96Hz and 50Hz->100Hz, so they are very similar, and the PC mode is independent but only works on HDMI_1) and one for 60Hz input signals (US TV-Shows and possibly PC games when you care more about the proper gamma and gamut than responsiveness and sharpness, it's your choice).

I used a ColorMunki Photo spectrophotometer for all measurements and SSG-3500CR glasses for 3D measurements.
I think I covered almost everything except 3D settings for the PC mode but I found that 720p60x2 is too blurry and 1080p30x2 is too slow for games, so I doubt if anybody wants to play in 3D.

I used Full Range RGB for PC and 60Hz Movie modes because these are intended for PC and/or console gaming. And the native format of the game's rendering engines is Full Range RGB.

I used Limited Range RGB for 2D Movie mode to preserve the BTB and WTW content and avoid the unnecessary but quality degrader range expansion step.

I used Full Range RGB for 3D Movie mode because this granted me some extra light output which is very low to start with (the display is very dark when you watch it through the glasses). (It cuts the WTW content but it shouldn't be used by properly mastered Blu-Rays and preserving it on the display limits the peak luminance which it not a good idea in 3D mode...)

It is important to reset the White Balance settings in the Service Menu (undo the factory calibration) if you plan to use my settings. They aren't accurate anyway and they can be different from unit-to-unit which makes the shared settings less usable on various random units.

The ADC settings should be changed because the PC mode clips some shades by default (that's why you should trigger PC mode before entering the SM - the normal YCC modes have ADC Results as well but you want to change the PC mode ADC Results, the movie mode is different and fine by default).

Note that every modes were set up for a dark room. I believe most of you use their TVs in dark rooms because it doesn't have AR filter, so it's basically a mirror in sunlight.

I would finish this long post with some screenshots.

I spoke to the support team , did not mail them. What i shall do now is email and write the feedback given by the supprt & see what they reply.

Here is the reply to the mail i sent.

Thank you for your valuable suggestion and also for taking interest in Samsung products.

Thanks..Is there any specific format of file that I need to search for which will run fine on PS51D550 ?

Thanks

well there's SBS(Side by Side) and Top/Bottom content available. SBS is more prevalent i guess and then there's full and half SBS content. Half being half the resolution. As i said just go to the site, explore 3d section and try em all.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
