amazon.uk - free shipping to india

One can get Regfree BDs on amazon.uk ,so region may not be issue.

Thanks, spirovious. "Buying region-free" goes without saying. I am just trying to verify that the NTSC/PAL issue does not apply to Blu-Ray's. I am 95% confident that it does not (actually more than that - none of the Blu-Ray covers mention PAL/NTSC, etc.). Just seeking some blessings from the very knowledgeable community here. :)

Hey Jay doesn't one require to make minimum purchases of 25 to be eligible for free shipping to India? Your cost of purchase is just 20.77.

Amazon UK says free shipping is available for orders over 25 pounds, but even orders of 20 pounds are accepted with free shipping. My recent orders have all been for roughly 20-22 pounds each. After VAT deduction, billed amount is 17-20 pounds.

thats a typo at the amazon site
i reconfirm blurays will never have ntsc/pal issue

Practically there shouldn't be...if all the content in Bluray is 1080P.But in Some rare Cases they will Include Extras or Documentaries in SD which can be NTSC or PAL format i.e (480i or 576i) then if your player supports only NTSC you will have issues playing the SD content with PAL format.
Recent example is Wolf Creek UK Bluray Disc. Some how the studio decided to have their Studio Introduction (Optimum) in PAL format. This made people in US who imported have to struggle to playing it.

Thanks
Satya.

Actually, I realize now that my concerns were rather baseless. BDs sold in India should definitely confirm to Region C and PAL (if indeed such PAL is applicable for BD). The BDs (Hollywood films) I have purchased in India are region free and play on my Region A BDP.

Thanks for the answers, guys.

Finally I received my BDs ( BBC's planet earth , matrix triology , 300 and the dark knight ) cost somewhere around 2900 + 455 duty .

Hi Sanro,
Why did you have to pay duty? I had ordered 18 BDs (in 4 lots) in the last 2-3weeks and I've received 15 BDs so far. I didn't have to pay duty for any of them. Are you paying it to the courier? Interesting...

Thanks and Regards,
Prabhu

I have ordered 7 BDs last week. Promised delivery date is 27-May. I marked them as a gift to myself. Let me see whether duty is applicable.

You are lucky! There must be duty if you receive all 18 BDs in one package. Normally small packages will reach without any duty.

Consider yourself lucky! They do charge some sort of duty. I had to pay 200 odd bucks for my order of 3 BDs. Super saver shipping comes through India Post so you would have to pay the postman I guess. Maybe your postman anna is a nice guy!

Hahahah this is really spooky...i opened this thread to check what everyone else's response been so far to their respective orders...and my door bell rang...postman came with my order of amazon uk...brought 1 blu..no extra charge paid...

But surprising thing is I had ordered Bourne Series with 5 more films (including 3 Korean films, 1 Dutch & 1 German film - Downfall) They shipped the Bourne Series and those 3 Korean films & 1 Dutch film together stating 24th May estimated delivery date and shipped me Downfall via DHL (gave me tracking number too) a good 4 days later stating estimated delivery date as 19th May...but Downfall arrived right now!

:yahoo:

Agreed. But I said in my post, Amazon UK is not necessarily cheaper. As regards to the titles that you mentioned, I own all those, albiet on DVD. I may buy these sometime in the future but right now my priority is to purchase the titles that I don't own.

Anyway, my comments on prices were just 'postscript'. My original question is about ability of a region A BDP to play (region free) blu-ray discs from region B. My US-made Sony BDP-S350 does not play DVD's from region 2. Using DVD-Shrink, I converted a few to Region-0 (PAL). Still the discs would not play. This is because the discs are still PAL.

I have read that BD's being HD do not have the NTSC/PAL legacy. HDMI is digital. But before buying from Amazon UK, I would like to be sure.

p/s.
The Sony BDP is not modifiable easily. Stegen asked me to ship the player to them for modification.

Oh ok...well I have a SONY BDP- S560 I purchased from USA...its a region A player too...and me too desperately looking forward to making it region free...u see any hope that we can do our BDPs region free?

Did you gift it yourselft at the time of placing order ?

In my case , it came through post office , there was a receipt on the package with the amount calculated by customs officer from Mumbai . So, I had to pay the duty . No options.

Sony players are very difficult to mod. As per Stegen, the mod kit involves piggy-backing the mod chip over the exisiting chip and requires special tools. The difficulty level is 7. They asked me to ship my player to them ... they will mod it and send it back to me.

So to answer your question, yes, the player is modifiable to make it region free.

But is it worth it? Considering the cost of shipping, cost of mod chip and labour, the amount spent is too high (I do not have the exact quote now but it came to about 350). It is much cheaper to buy a region B player.

I don't think that makes a difference. I had "gifted" my order to my wife but no cigar!
Anyway even if it is a gift, Amazon just blacks a small box on the front invoice/shipping sticker. It is hardly noticeable.
