Batery powered DIY CNC phono stage

I just unboxed the Phono Pre. It was delivered in my office today morning, but I was moving about, so I couldn't open the package till now.

I said "unboxed", because Santhosh had packed it so securely - 3 layers of tightly wound bubble wrap and a sturdy cardboard box of just the right size - that it felt like unboxing something factory-packed.

I love it already! It feels really sturdy, and the wood-with-black look makes it look like serious kit. Can't wait to use it with my TT! :)

Thanks again, Santhosh! I wouldn't get to enjoy this Phono Pre without your offer to help build it for me.

This is my first DIY project. I am holding holding soldering iron for first time. Please let me know if there is any problem with the connection?

Hi Santosh,
It looks good to my eyes,no solder bridges visible.Op amps and El caps orientation are correct. You should cut those cap leads(circled left in pic)as short as possible, also visually check for bad solder joint (circled right in pic).Everything else looks fine to me.Post pic when you connect switch and battery.Don't forget to select position on DIP switch, recommended load setting is 47k(No 3 position on both the DIP switches)

Hi Santnai,

Please look at the below red circles. You have to remove possible shorts. Also look at the yellow circles. apply some wax over that and reheat with soldering hot for 2-3 sec in the base joint of PCB and part lead. This will remove extra solder and clean the joint. Also while soldering don't do it under 'ON' ceiling fan or wind blowing through window on PCB. It creates dry joints.

Sachin, you are bang on.:)

Unfortunately I din find suitable case after hunting for almost 2 hrs in SP Road and JC Road finally I gave up. I connected CNC phono stage to my system after implementing above mentioned suggestions by Mishraji and Sachin.

Man what a difference!!! :). This was a inspiration for me to do more of DIY project. I would like to thank Sachin for his extended help. Whenever I called up he listened to me patiently and responded very politely. Man you rock !!!

I would also thank Mishraji for his guidence and mentorship for all the forum members. Hats off to your effort guys !!!

CNC with SSP

If anyone wants to use CNC with SSP.Omishra has made a nice illustrative pic, please see below pic :

This way you can avoid running of CNC phono while only SSP is required. and input could be selected with another switch. Switch 2 and D1, D2 will not be required of you want CNC to be ON all time irrespective of which input used.

Sachin

Thank you Sachin and Mishraji for putting the detail diagram together on a special request for a newbie like me still integrating both CNC an SSP together is a tough task. Above diagram is little bit different from the connection I made for CNC. Do you neet alter the connections? I am little confused with the looping done on Line in and Output. Your expert guidence required for the pictures attached below.

Santosh

Santosh, thanks for your words.

See, once you decide about 2 input sources then you need proper grounding. I used all +, - & signal wires as point to point connection from RCA to PCB, RCA to switches and PCB to switches.

Now your question is about ground line. Catch line is - input-output grounds are connected together and SSP ground. SSP and CNC grounds are going to ground at battery connection. Same battery ground is referred for tt ground wire and chassis. That avoids any ground loop.

Hi Santhosh,
I am assuming you make all connections according to pic posted here. You should connect volume pot according to this pic

I completed hydra's Phonostage early this morning. Actually it was done two days back but on testing there was no sound. Discussed this issue with Sachin(sachu888) and isolated the issue to the opamp being fitted wrongly. Thanks for your help Sachin. Should reach Hydra tomorrow.

More than the soldering, I really enjoyed making a frugal enclosure for the phonostage. I have posted some W.I.P pics here:
Home to the Indian DIYer and Hobbyist

About the sound, I was able to listen to it for about an hour today. Very nice detailed sound. I was amazed at the retrieval of HF, I have never heard my Pioneer PL-15 sound this good. It beats the Project Phonobox easily. I am told sound improves with over 30hrs on it. I still haven't built mine, will do soon.

Some pics of the completed phonostage:
