BS vs FS

There are some amazing BS available (Q Acoustics, KEF) or should I go for FS speakers.Shivam

What is your budget ? What kind of music do you listen to ? What components do you presently have and what is your approximate room size ?
There are a number of factors to be considered here.
1. BS are small and take up less space. They can be placed literally anywhere where they can sit. They can even be hung on the wall. Ideally they should be placed on their own stands.
2. BS have frequency limitation at the lower level. Most BS stop at 50-100Hz. Even if a anything less than 100Hz is specified, because of the size of the drivers, they may not be able to deliver those frequencies well.
3. BS have lesser internal air volume, and may not be able to deliver a good soundstage.
4. Most BS are limited to two drivers where the larger driver handles all frequencies from 2000 and below.
5. FS have large air volume and can create a larger soundstage.
6. FS are large, have to placed on the floor, and need space.
7. Most FS are three way, and some can go down to 20Hz.
8. Many FS can handle a large amplifier, some upto 200-250 watts.

I've been a long time music lover but somehow never got a serious HiFi system together. My music had been played through CD players, Stereos, Ipods etc but am looking to finally invest in a decent mid/entry level HiFi system. I am looking for suggestions based on the below:
1. I Own: Full HD LCD TV, BlueRay DVD, PS3, Ipod/IPad and lots of CD/DVDs
2. Want to Buy: AVR (Denon 1912 or similar); pair of FS (entry/mid levels) - Heco Victa look very appealing.
3. Room size: 12 x 14 ft, Front throw ~ 12 ft (small Mumbai apartment)
4. Budget: 25 - 40 K for AVR; 25 - 40K for FS
5. Use: 40% music; 25% movies, 25% sports, 10% PS3
6. Style: I am looking for clarity, fidelity, crisp sounds. I dont intend to play loud, headbanging heavy metal or irate neighbours. Will probably listen to more mids/highs and occasional thump in the movies. Not looking for a heavy "loud" speaker. Moderate power/impedence is welcome as not looking to host a concert at my apartment. Airplay, Ipod friendly, ease of use are desirable.
I hope I am able to communicate my preferances. Pls let me know if I need to add anything. I haven't started audtions yet. I am also tempted to order some gear through amazon.de

After listening to some amazing BS speakers recently I think you can do well with a good set of these speakers. Also they are a lot more easier to drive with a budget amp (not true for all BS speakers). In a small room like many apartments have these days a good BS can do quite well. If you need the bass then supplement the setup with a good sub and you can have a very solid setup.

I also suggest bookshelf speakers for you.
Within your requirements, Wharfedale Diamond series bookshelves and similar offerings by PSB seem good. I don't have much experience with Denon AVR and so I can't comment on system synergy. The best option will be to hear out the various speakers in your budget.
BS unlike floor-standers don't have a frequency response extending very low and you might need a subwoofer too especially for movies.

Looks to me that you might spend some time reading up and educating yourself to make an intelligent choice.
Venkat has explained some areas, but has not elaborated on an area that I would like to elaborate upon. I own a few of these as well as have a FS system underway.

Bookshelf has a small form factor and can be stand,bookshelf or bracket mounted. The stand mounted monitor is bigger, is normally a 2 way and, well designed can easily rival a FS. A FS can be a single driver, full range, a 2 way or as Venkat indicated, a 3 way.

+1. I had Acoustic Portrait monitors which had a LF response down to 45 Hz. They performed commendably well in my 12 x 18 living room.
@ George: Thank you and am always keen to read and self-educate. Thats prolly the best way to make an informed choice. Can you point me to what should I be reading up on and if the info is to be found in these forums. Happy to look up additional info ..
I got some technical differences from venkat and you offered a 3rd option but what I really wanted some help on is this:
What factors determine the selection of a bookshelf vs FS speakers for an individual? Is it the size of room, the kind of music played, cost etc. Is an excellent BS speaker better than an avg FS? Or is it all subjective just as selection of a FS speaker is (e.g. Jamo vs Wharfedale vs KEF etc etc)

In the end the design and the drivers used will determine the final result-the same as it is for a car, a dish, or anything else in life! In addition another key factor( and I am a strong believer in this) that plays a part is the synergy between speakers and amp.
For starters, sift through some of the posts on this forum, to get some understanding-unfortunately many posts are made by people who air opinions without first hand knowledge, so you need separate those from the really knowledgeable posts..

A monitor is a speaker system that is much larger than a bookshelf speaker system, it could be say 18-20 inches high, and is usually mounted on stands to bring the tweeter upto your ear level.

To complicate matters, here's a twist. I am currently building s speaker system that is both a floor stander as well as a monitor-the design of the enclsoure is about 20 inches, but the speaker enclosure extends to the floor. The lower part is just a stand. See my thread in the diy section where I have posted photographs and you will understand-"A New Toy on the Anvil"

I probably should have worded it better-the operational part of the enclosure is the size of a monitor, but instead of being stand mounted, the enclosure extends all the way to the floor, so it actually ends up a floor stander. Its an MTM design.
Highly recommend you listen to the PSBs as well.
PSB dealer is Lakozy (Chowpatty) where you can get an audition as well.

in my opinion get a pair of wharfedale diamond 10.1 and throw in a sub later probably from wharf's stable eg-sw 150..to my ears i get an crispy pristine spacious presentation..probably my source is an 5star rated budget one!.my setup=marantz pm5003+cd 6004+wharf dia 10.1+wharf sw150(though i use it very rarely!)listen up bro!!!!!At the end of the day its your money n your ears! so screw everything just spare time,drive around and take elaborate auditions if possible and you will end up with what you really like/love instead of what others like n believe in!...dont search for what you never knew instead settle for what might possibly make you feel content/happy/relieved!
