Bug Head Player

Just tried to download 6.49, but its 6.51 now. need to search on different sites. Hey is damn fast two new releases in span of some hours

I was told that the developer has shifted to using headphones.
This is a little problematic as most of us are using speakers for listening.

I plan to sit out on the newer versions unless I hear something significant develops.

Tried the 6.51 version in the default mode. Couldn't find any significant difference from Foobar 2000.
That's because of one or multiple things stated below:
1. Your "system" is not resolving enough.
2. You have lead ears.
3. Your computer does not have 128 GB. RAM!
4. You didn't "rewrite".
5. You don't understand Japanese.
6. You didn't download fast enough. There's a new version out already which is "better". Or "worse".
7. Your DAC is rubbish. Oh, was that covered in # 1?
8. Your processor has an inadequate # of cores.
9. You didn't trawl (troll?) multiple forums where BHE is discussed.
10. Foobar 2K also does DSP and it's set "on" on your FB2K.

P.S. - all this was in jest. :D

Poor me! Too many issues to solve :D

Downloaded BHP 6.51 and played it briefly without touching any additional adjustments for the first time. Sound is definitely more alive and engaging as compared to foobar. My laptop has 4 GB RAM, i3 processor and 500 GB storage.

I have a few questions and will be grateful if I can get the answers or somebody please point me to the relevant thread.

1) There are five shortcuts downloaded to my desktop when i installed it. While I understand Bughead and Infinity Blade are players and I was able to play tracks through it, Not sure what others do?
- Bughead
- Infinity Blade
- All core any cures
- Hyper regenerate knight
- Rewrite data

2) What could be the minimal & best possible settings for my laptop?
3) i am not able to add folders; can add tracks only. Any solution for that?
4) Can this be operated via any iphone app (like monkeymote in foobar)?
5) tracks are starting after seven+ seconds. is this normal or my pc is slow?

Thanks very much

The software is on the computing intensive side of music playback approach.
This is in complete contrast to the minimal approach of other players.
It will stress your machine to the limit so using it for other programs during playback is not recommended.

- Bughead

The basic version that is voiced similar to Foobar.
This option was offered for DACs that were tuned with players with jitter (such as Foobar according to the developer).

- Infinity Blade

This is the best quality player - I use this mostly.

- All core any cures

This script optimizes the processor cores - makes a difference in sound.
The developer recommend the following sequence for optimal effect
Run ACAC , wait 3 minutes
Run ACAC , wait 3 minutes
Run ACAC , wait 3 minutes
Run ACAC , choose "Repeat the run every 34 min"

- Hyper regenerate knight

A more recent optimization script - run this after you have finished the earlier step.
Similar to ACAC but runs in background every few seconds.

- Rewrite data

Another recommended optimization script that defrags the files selected.
The recommended method for using this script is as follows:

Run ACAC;
Right click and run Rewrite Data using "Run as Administrator".
Press "User Select" button on the far right of the Rewrite Data screen.
Navigate to ASIO driver folder and then Start (Rewrite),
Then press Bug Head button (top left) and Rewrite that.
Wait 3 minutes and repeat -twice.
Then run ACAC again.
Note: you have to go back to "User Select" each time.

2) What could be the minimal & best possible settings for my laptop?

The most minimal mode is the "Normal" mode. Try it - it's pretty good.
Other settings like upsampling and filters etc have to be tried in your setup
Josh has given some very good pointers in his earlier post.
See his post #49 and post #119 among others.

Another option would be the "Secret Menu".
This is a mode where the player kills the GUI allowing for playback on slower machines.
Here is Josh's instructions from his first post on this thread

One way to get around the issue of low RAM is to use the Secret Menu. After you've done your settings and loaded tracks, Click on the empty space to the right of LPF free and Self Sound Optimizer. A new menu window will open. Enable Command Line menu, then close the window. Start Play. After some time the player screen will disappear. You will not be able to stop, skip, etc. The only way to stop playback is from the Task Manager. But using Command Line, you can get away with 4 GB of RAM.

3) i am not able to add folders; can add tracks only. Any solution for that?
4) Can this be operated via any iphone app (like monkeymote in foobar)?

Bughead has a very basic interface that does not support many standard features.
No options available for folders and remote operation.
I use "Remote Desktop" to control it from another computer.

5) tracks are starting after seven+ seconds. is this normal or my pc is slow?

There is a lot of pre-processing going with BHE.
The 7 sec time is due to the "Memory Envalid" option in Setup.
Depending on your settings you may add more time before playback starts.
The software is very resource hungry - add more RAM and upgrade your processor for better results.

Yes, this is consistent with what the developer had in mind.
Default Bughead is for DACs that were voiced with Foobar.

Try the other options (see my earlier post) for increasing your listening pleasure.

Just to add to Nikhil's suggestions, Rewrite can also be used to rewrite your music tracks. Choose a folder containing the music you want to play and click Rewrite button. This needs to be repeated over time as its effect wanes over time. I think this is because Windows' less than optimal way of writing and storing files in hard disk. Defrag is a long and painful process we used to use for improving computer speed. It stores data of a file in contiguous regions of the disk instead of spreading it over unrelated regions, this speeding up read/write speed. Rewrite is something similar (though I guess it does more than simply defrag) but can be applied over a small area of the disk instead of having to do it to the whole disk.

Ok, I tried Infinity Blade this time, and heard a subtle difference compared to Foobar2000. After careful listening for 30 minutes (wav files, male and female singers) my feeling was that Infinity Blade plays more like vinyl while Foobar2000 plays more like CD. I suspect Infinity Blade is deliberately adding low level second harmonic frequencies to the signal to get more "warmth" while Foobar does none of that.

cheers,
Reji

Many thanks Nikhil for your detailed explanation. So far I only used bughead player and I found it better than foobar. I was able to add individual folder, it is not taking the entire library or folder within the folder but an individual album at a time which is as good as selecting all music files from an individual album.

I will certainly try Infinity blade and other suggestions. I thought bughead was the main player and Infinity blade is the other version. Sorry for not doing my homework properly.

I tried to use some features but there was noise (small clicks and pops) so my only option is to run the basic version only.

Player is not very user friendly or i am not used to it but the sound coming from it is worth every effort.

Thanks a lot for the help once again.

Regards,
Vinay

Do try different settings of buffer in ASIO driver. Click ASIO button on bottom right of player main screen, choose your driver and change the current/default setting of 512 to 1024. Try playing again. If there's still clicks and pops (basically it's stuttering), change to next higher value of 2048. Sometimes using a lower value of 256 worked on some versions of Bug Head/Infinity Blade. So do experiment.

May I know which ASIO driver you're using?
