Coloured Vinyl

So whatever is told about Pic dics that they are for display purpose only and not meant to play is correct or no?

One of my friend at Audiokarma says"Picture discs should be avoided like a plague".It is a collector's item, not so good for playing.I never had any pic disc,so don't really know the quality.

Regards,
Sachin

I think colour discs are in a different league than the picture discs and are as good as regular black for playing & SQ( talking about coloured discs). The pictures of the coloured disc I posted in the last page says that it has better SQ & is gentle on the stylus! It even goes on to state that the record life is more. Frankly, I did not notice the SQ to be any superior, may be just a mental SQ & fad that these discs sold.

Your thoughts on this Gentlemen?

That's what is the prevailing general idea, but I was curious to know the technical part behind it. Like 'peace_sells' wrote, last 4 Iron Maiden albums are released on pic disc only. Does that mean one will buy the vinyl for display only and listen to cd?

I have few pic discs with me among which MJ's Bad & Thriller are new. On first play they sounded ok. Don't play them often(use only for demo) as have the normal black records also. But the other old pic discs sound normal to me. Though I don't know the history of these records as are bought 2nd hand.

As mentioned earlier, vinyl as a material is colorless and pigment is added later on. Black, most probably, is cheapest hence widely used. So 'superior SQ' and all are just gimmick.

In the early days of 45rpm 7 inches, RCA used to make different colored records to identify different genres and had nothing to do with quality. Japanese red vinyls are in demand because they are supposed to be 'first print' records.

In Kolkata, 'INRECO' made some colored vinyls which were just normal release and nothing special SQwise. They only looked different than the normal black and red HMV records.

Thanks Bhaskar for the information.

Ah! Colourless vinyl record would not have looked bad! Though, some turntables which use optical disc sizing system may have had troubles detecting the disc.

ON the other link provided by Sachin, I get to read that the black colouring agent is the best bet to control surface noise.

Most picture discs don't sound good. I don't know the technical reason..maybe if you have thick layers of vinyls sandwiching the paper layer then maybe you'll get a better sound. This Iron Maiden picture disc is almost 200-210 grams each. It definitely sounds better than usual pic discs. However, a little bit of background noise still exists. So yes. Most picture discs are just collectors items.

Wow! You have a Fate's Warning vinyl? Never knew their albums existed on vinyl. I love that band.
A Pleasant shade of Gray is the only album that was not originally pressed on vinyl (the one i have is a 2012 reissue pressing). All other FW albums were originally pressed on vinyl! What's your favourite FW album? Checked out their new material?

@peace sells : That is one insane insane collection!! Autopsy, Cynic, Cryptopsy, Megadeth even Mastodon!! I am lost for words.. how did you find these gems? specially Autopsy! Simply awesome!

Cheers
Thanks! :) Autopsy, Mastodon and Atheist i bought from Flipkart..They have some pretty rare ones..but they're not available all the time..the rest (which are not available on Flipkart) i got from the online stores of various record labels (Century Media, War on Music, Nuclear Blast etc).

Absolutely. Coloured vinyls are in a different league totally. Some of my coloured vinyls sound fantastic! Especially the clear and transparent ones (the clear and transparent ones sound livelier somehow). But even the other colours sound really good. Just as good as the black ones if not better (of course i don't have an album which I own both on black and colour vinyl so that i can compare). However some 'splatter vinyls' don't sound as good. Not as bad as pic discs for sure but they lack some bass.
