Hi all,

Has anyone bought used equipment from Prakasam who is based in Chintadripet, Near Egmore Railway Station, Chennai and advertises regularly on various For Sale websites? What has been your experience with the quality of the equipment bought and the fairness of the prices charged etc?

There is also a used equipment (mostly amplifiers) dealer in Mumbai named Farhad. Are his dealings fair and reliable?

Are there other dealers in used audio equipment?

You can PM me your views and opinions if you so like.

Regards.

Farhad, Where in Mumbai? Share some infor to dig some details.

Mr.Prakasam - the dealer who spams all AD sites across the country but had a problem selling without a reference:ohyeah:

My experience with Mr.Prakasam was bizarre to say the least. When I checked with him about a year ago regarding an Ad he had placed in Olx, he wanted to know the rest of my gear - not with an intention of helping me make an informed decision. He was actually trying to assess my affordability. I could have convinced him about by affordability by dropping a few names. Instead I told him to .... go take a walk:rolleyes:.

EDIT: This could be a one-off experience but a bad one for sure. Had nothing against him, my friends have bought from and sold to him in the past.

Hi miroflex,

Glad to know that you are exploring all options. However, unless the used-equipment-dealer is well known and is recommended by a lot of members of the forum who have had direct interaction with the dealer, I would advise you not to consider this option.

Look out for sales by audiophiles. Here also, in general one needs to be careful so that there is no bitter feeling later on. There is a better chance that the audiophile has maintained the equipment very well, or in case, there is some problems with the unit, he or she is honest about it.

Another attractive option is to inquire with new-equipment-dealers if any of their customers are upgrading and as a result wants to sell off their current gear. Many a time, the dealer himself looks for a buyer of the used equipment of his customer, because it helps the dealer too. I know a few people in this forum who has benefited from this. For example, I know some people have got good deals this way from boom-a-rang in Bombay and Sridhar (ARN Systems) from Bangalore. I am sure there are other dealers who help out their existing customers this way and at the same time get in new customers. To me, this seems a fair procedure, and helps out all three parties.

Regards.

Miroflex, have PMed you contact details of a dealer whom I can recommend. He is based out of Bangalore though, so check with him.

Thanks Asit. Since Sridhar has access to this forum, I think he can put up such stuff in "On sale by Dealer" so that ppl can benefit.
I had asked Sridhar once, and he gave me reference of a client, but it didn't work out as the client wanted me to come over and I could not go to his city.

I agree with you, Santhosh. His telephone manners leave much to to be desired and he goes to great lengths to establish the depth of the buyers' pockets.

And yet some of the most esoteric and desirable equipment seems to land on his shelves. Some other members also seem to have had bad experiences with them. The main problem is assessing the condition of the equipment, Mr. Prakasam's assertiveness notwithstanding.

Thanks and regards.

sir,
I feel the matter is simple. Quote your price and mention the condition.
In this day n age of google, a prospective buyer can get prices on the net.
And regards "gaging" what u can afford and not afford, this does not hold good. Today someone you feel who dosent have a dime in his pocket can shell out money on costly gear. this is my experience

I have heard some real nightmarish stories about this chap from Chennai. I personally had couple of really bad experiences a few years ago. Deal at your own risk !

Can you share some more details ? It will surely save some members hard earned money.

A good dealer in Chennai: He is very reliable and honest: His name is Sasi : 9840496860
Agree with you Prabakar. I got my first pre-amp and power amp from Sasikumar ~9 years ago. Met him quite by accident as he happened to be my cousin's classmate. The power amp is still going strong and is being used to drive Zone B or 6th and 7th channel (when movie requires it). Bought some NOS LPs from him on my recent visit to Chennai.

Yes Mr.Santhosh. I have bought so many audio equipments from him. Recently I bought a Lexicon power amp and a denon preamp. Reasonably priced and cooperative. By the way , r you from bangalore?

Thanks Heliumflight,

I am keeping your advice in mind. The only problem is that the most desirable and esoteric equipment seems to land up in Mr. Prakasam's cupboard. At outrageous prices though!

Thanks for your SMSes! We must keep the second hand market alive otherwise all the vintage gear will vanish and future generations will be left rubbing their hands in disappointment.

Regards.
