DIY Super Simple Preamp

Hi Sachin,
Being new to this forum, I guess I am unable to PM you. Please let me know how else I can seek help from you to obtain the SSP kit. I am trying to improve my Norge1000 with SSP and have already ordered for LME49990MA opamps. As adviced by Murali, I will have to use a single-to-dual soic8 adapter in SSP in order to use those mono ICs. I am on the look out for this adapter too. I am thinking to use the 15volt power supply from the torroid to power up the SSP.

Best Regards,
Laksh

Hi Laksh,
You will need 2XLME49990 Opamps.I also have SOIC to Dual(Single to dual)adapter for 49990 see this 2 Dual SOIC to DIP 8 Convert PCB Adapter SMD OPA627 | eBay
You can use existing power supply of Norge.

Regards,
Sachin

Thanks Sachin. The SMD soldering I believe as shown in below image will be challenging but I will take it on.

Hi Sachu888
My SSP was completed few weeks ago and working well. Quite satisfied with the performance and I am using my mobile and mp3 player as sources.

The only problem is disconnecting the battery after the use to save battery power. But you had mentioned in post 84 on page 9 about a switch. Can you let me know what kind of switch I have to get for this purpose?. You might have already mentioned it, but I am unable to find it. Thanks again.

You will need a DPDT toggle switch with the batteries.See Joshua's pic for reference http://www.hifivision.com/phono-turntables/20115-batery-powered-diy-cnc-phono-stage-44.html

Hi Sachin,
Thanks a lot for extending help but let me uphold my DIY spirit and do the SMD soldering myself. It would be encouraging to see my own handiwork :))

Completed SSP + Power supply kit.Now I have doubts-

What is the operating votltage of SSP? 9, 0,-9V? OR even more/Lowers?
I feel sound signature changed a bit & more warm now.
Is that due to long cables used to control volume than previous?
Or any other?

Thats great you completed successfully. You can set voltage @ +12,0,-12 for your Opamps (OPA2132/2134).Voltage depends upon opamps OPA2132/2134 can be run on min +5/-5V to +18/-18 max,so +/-12 is enough.

Sachin

OK,its OPA 2134PA,so 12 V can be good choice.
Now will increase in Voltage from 9V to 12V make its sound better?

Its been long but I have been able to put together this super simple preamp and it sounds excellent and serves purpose very well. I am using LME49990 opamps and found 15volts brings out its best. 15volts is still 3 volts below its max voltage of 18 so this one operates perfectly fine in its safe operating area. Earlier I used it with 9volt batteries but it used to drain them very quick and did not sound as good as with 15 volts supply input.
My thanks to Sachin and Om for this DIY. I did not do well my first SMD with lme49990 and broke one chip. However continued practising on cheaper ones and bought a magnifying glass and micro soldering station to finally finish this project.

Lakshmidhar

Congrats, how do you compare LME49990 to stock opsamps?I may upgrade too.

Hi Mr. Sachin, I'm a newcommer to this forum and really loved this thread! I Recently purchased a Norge 2060 amp and JBL Control 1's. I relished the sound but after reading this thread, i'm hungry for more. I'm not at all into DIY stuff but really want to get my hands one SSP. Along with the Power supply. Request you to please guide me on how to go ahead and inform me on how much do i have to pay for the SSP and PSU.

later i would also like to know on how and where to connect the SSP in the amp. Will i be able to switch from the SSP to the built in pre by having a switch?

Thanks and Regards,

Duncan

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
