DIY Super Simple Preamp

Hi Mr. Sachin, I'm a newcommer to this forum and really loved this thread! I Recently purchased a Norge 2060 amp and JBL Control 1's. I relished the sound but after reading this thread, i'm hungry for more. I'm not at all into DIY stuff but really want to get my hands one SSP. Along with the Power supply. Request you to please guide me on how to go ahead and inform me on how much do i have to pay for the SSP and PSU.

later i would also like to know on how and where to connect the SSP in the amp. Will i be able to switch from the SSP to the built in pre by having a switch?

Thanks and Regards,

Duncan

You can run SSP on 2X9V batteries. You can later shift it inside Norge using same power supply for amp,no need to build another power supply.

Regards,
Sachin

Are the SSP kits still available? If yes can you direct me how to go ahead with the payment. Also wanted to know where do i connect the SSP in the Norge 2060.

Thanks Sachin!

@duncan

I have the ssp connected to my Norge 2060. I removed the existing preamp circuit and replaced it with the SSP. Let me know if you need any help.

I have used the existing power supply of the Norge and also kept the volume controller since it had the remote attached.

Hello debzkool,

Are you aware if the Norge Amps now use a better pre-amp? I recall reading such a message in one of the threads here, but can't find it now.

I recently purchased a Norge 2060, and am looking for ways to improve the sq.

TIA

My 2060 is about an year old. I had the ssp installed in January. I have been pretty happy with the change. But one thing is that you will loose out on tone control. I have a beringer equaliser so I can compensate on that.

Hi... Is it possible to retain both pre amps? the stock as well as the SSP? and switch between them using switches for the PSU and Audio outputs?

@ Sachin, thanks for helping me out in my first leap into DIY's... thanks to all the FM's as Ive learned a lot from your posts...

Guys,

I just sat and thought of a design for my Norge 2060 by keeping both the pre-amps ie the SSP and built-in pre. But for This I need suggestions from Norge owners especially FM Debzkool and others like Sachin, Omishra, Audiodoc and all others. I plan to use DPDT (on - off - on) switches for the Left channel, Right channel, as well as the PSU. Doing this will help me select the SSP or Stock pre with the help of just 3 switches.

My only concern is the possible drop in SQ by using the switches in the R & L Channels.

Could physical connections like RCA plugs help?

Comments Please!!!

Thanks...

Your idea is good. No need to switch PreAmp power lines. Switches can loose contact quality over time. But if you could get hold of good switches then that options is also good.

Other idea is also good. Think in this way - 4X stereo RCA with loops in back will also do. But you need 1 stereo input common existing Preamp and SSP in parallel. [you can make two separate inputs too.] Here you will get 2 stereo outputs from each preamp. Get it at separate RCA output pairs at back.

Now power amp module has 1 stereo input from RCA at back side. You can put small 6" RCA loop wire externally to select which pre you want to select. Also you can bypass all preAmps too.

Or mix and match from above combinations as you like. What about Volume control in case of only SSP mode?

Think I may settle with the RCA options for Audio and could switch them using Good RCA cables. Concerning the PSU, a switch there was what I wanted to prevent the power being shared.

Now for the switches (I'm no pro in electronics) I purchased, each costing roughly Rs.230 from RS Components, don't really know if they are of a high quality but the price suggests that they are. And for volume pot; yes, I have it planned and (purchased as well from RS Components), the same way as all of you have done it but just that I haven't shown it on the diagram.

Thanks for a quick response Sir.

Sir,
If you take a look at the pic below, its a pic of the norge 2060 uploaded by Teja...

It can be seen that there are 4 pairs of RCA inputs. In my case I would be using only the AUX. So is it a good idea to re-wire the remaining 3 and use it to my benefit?

That's good! You don't have to drill any hole for RCA. Provide 'Aux' input to both preamps. Get SSP output from 'CD', and existing preamps output from 'TAPE'. Connect power amps input to 4th pair. Input always goes to 1st marked 'AUX'. It's easy to loop from 2 (marked CD) or 3 (marked TAPE) to 4th pair which goes to power amp boards.

This way you don't loose any of current function. Plus you can test any preamp as you can break loop and take input of any other external preamp too.

Dear Sir,

I have purchased a 47k vol pot as well. should I use it or can I use the Norge's one that's already being used by default? Can it be used in parallel; but just one pre-amp using it?

If so, will there be a backward flow of audio signals to the SSP when the built in pre is on? And is it harmful for the SSP?

Guess by this weekend I should complete my setup.
