DIY Super Simple Preamp

It sounds excellent for something that cost so little to build. However, as of now my soundstage has shrunk significantly.

Probably it requires some time to break in. Give some 30 odd hours. Then check.

I have the following audio set up:
Cambridge Audio DV-99 DVD player>Norge Concerto Gold 1000>Mordaunt Short Aviano 2 BS speakers mounted on DIY stand. I was not satisfied with the sound quality. That will be more whenever I visit my friend N.Murali's home and audition thro his setup. I felt that I was lacking something and wanted to upgrade my source and amplifier as well. One day, he suggested me to try the Super Simple Preamp using the same power source of Norge amp byepassing the source pre-amp. He helped me to procure the pre-amp with Burr Brown 2134 opamp. To our surprise it sounded well to my liking. The SQ improved with voice separation and enhanced bass. Now it crossed 10 Hrs of break-in and am satisfied with the improvement. I dropped the idea of upgrading also.
I spent Rs.1700 and got the Value For Money. I owe my thanks to my mentor, friend N.Murali for his sincere efforts and suggestions from the beginning. Hope this will be helpful for those who have Norge 1000.

Shanspon, thank you for sharing your experience with us.
It's amazing how things are like these, which are actually within our reach can bring so much improvement and hence, satisfaction!

Hi MrShanpson,

I am glad that you are liking and enjoying the SSP Pre-amp.

"Little drops of water make a mighty ocean" applies to audio also, even simple tweaks done with informed mind and efforts adds to the performance.

Actually you should thank our FMs Omishra and Sachin for their DIY efforts and making this PCB and parts available to our FMs at a reasonable cost.

On my part, I sensed that the weakest link in your chain is your Norge's Pre-amp from my experiments with Norge 2060, that is why I suggested that the SSP will make a good improvement in your Norge Concert gold amp. Infact I can say that the SSP if used with 49990 OP-amp will, even if not surpassing, will stand on par with the Pre-amp circuit of any MNC branded Integrated Amplifier.

I have ordered a 4562 OP-Amp from kitsnspares, my fourth in a series of experiment wih SSP and will post my impressions once it is over.

My sincere thanks to N.Murali for detecting the weakest point in my setup and also for assisting me to make good improvement. Also, I thank FMs OMishraji & Sachin for their innovation and presenting the SSP to forum members at reasonable cost.

I also found the same that preamp from Norge is not as good as poweramp.
Even with new Pre power combo, they are using same preamp used in 1000.

Sachin,

finally i was able to successfully assemble the kit yesterday night. Also i was able to fire it up. Man! what a transformation. The sound stage has increased, which gives more airy feeling. The bass has opened up. The voices are more lively & clear. Can feel the instrument separation.

This is one hell of a pre-amp. Now my next hunt it to make a simple PVC enclosure for this circuit. I might need you help for the R-Core and PSU circuit kit. Thanks again for bringing this wonderful circuit to the DIY community. Appreciate it!

cheers,
Vincent

Can't this be done using a single power supply like this (using voltage doubler and 78xx and 79xx voltage regulators?

p05_fig1.gif
Yes, it will work but that has higher noise floor thanks to 78XX and 79XX regulators. For low noise and better HiFi you should consider well filtered LM317 based regulators , like one which we used for phono preamps and pass B1

Thanks Omishra, found this circuit with silkscreen overlay and copper layer schematic.

This I designed for us and PCB were pressed for group buy. Sachin can honor our request to make it available once again. ;)

Sachin,

since i would be housing this is a PVC box, external interferences would be an hindrance, so i got the 2+1 cable for Volume Pot and 1+1 for inputs and outputs. This was procured locally at SP Road, bangalore for 20 Rs a mtr.

Very neat build Vincent.Which wire did you use for RCA connections?

Regards,
Sachin

I can do that if few more members are interested.I have already got inquires from 3 more members. One full power supply kit would cost you Rs 800(Approx)+ you will need a R-core Amp for this.
