Caught up with new seasons of a few series.
Homeland S04:
Somewhere in this thread, I promised never to watch this season. However, I never promised to keep my promises
.
This season was a
sort of return to form for the series as it was much better than the disappointing S03. It kept me interested through out, except the last episode, which felt like a filler - something that belonged to the first half of the next season opener.
I still think the first season (and to a very large extent, the second) have set a high benchmark the show might never meet.
House of Cards S03:
Though I can't say that the overall quality of the show has gone down etc., I did not like it as much as Season 2. May be the thrill of the chase was better than the achievement / the odds against the Underwoods are not as heavily stacked / a bit too much soul searching / the expectations were too high? I don't know.
Banshee S03:
Banshee was pretty good in S01 and had a very interesting start to S02. But, starting with S02 Episode 5, it went melodramatic and blunted my interest. The last few episodes were OK, but the sour taste left by digging deep into the 'feelings' of the characters never left my mind.
The third episode of the current season made me sit-up, the first time Banshee has done so since the second episode of the second season. It seemed like finally writers were getting around to what made me like the series in the first place. From there, it went from strength to strength and ended up as the most memorable season of the series so far. Banshee is not about logic, it is not about the inner struggles or moral values. It is about throwing together dark characters with bad intent and blasting the way out with a bullet (or a machete or sword or knife or the good ol' fist) with lot of blood spilled. This season also started making inroads into the background of the main characters (though we still (and I hope never) don't know the real name of "Lucas Hood"). Of all the series I watched (which is not a lot), this is definitely the most improved season (all others being same or slightly lower by their standards).
Justified S06 - 3 episodes to go:
There are only a few series that I slip into and enjoy right away. There are series like 'Castle' where I expect only the
expected because it's a well known episodic template they keep filling up. But with Justified, I don't need to turn off the thinking brain and am not always sure what the characters are going to do. It does not dwell too much on the personal lives of supporting and minor characters (something many series can be accused of) unless warranted by the plot. Some minor characters from long past episodes make surprising re-appearances which is something Justified handles well, almost all the time. Those are some of the things that endear this series to me.
On top of that, this is a series with a silver tongue as dialogues - cool, witty and thoughtful - keep on coming. There are not many series which can quote Keynes, refer Occam's Razor and still be cool.
It does have slight drags from time to time, but on the whole, it never stops being entertaining (S02 and S04 are the best). This being the last season, I hope it goes out on a high. It has been good so far.
