How to play mkv file on Sony Bravia LED tv-a guide

Its better if vicky2001 formats his drive as exFAT, no file size limit and also sony bravia supports exFAT, splitting a file everytime is an unnecessary hassle, so its better to format the drive as exFAT once and then enjoy the movies on your bravia.

thanks for replies...etios and lake1988...only now i get to know that split files will be played sequentially automatically....so now i've both options....to format in exFAT and FAT32... i'm thinking to make 2 partitions one in FAT32, another in exFAT so that i can use HDD on almost all devices.....larger files i may put in exFAT drive and others in FAT32....

That won't work cause sony only support non-partitioned drive...if you make more than one partitioned it will recognise only the first one.

i am noticing that people are complaining about bravia led not playing mkv files. So here is a guide on how to play them.
1.download tsmuxer gui..it's a freeware.
2.add the mkv file u want to play.
3.if u select the video track there is an option change level..if it is greater than 4.1 change it to 4.1.
4.now in output select m2ts muxing and point the output to a destination folder and click on start muxing.

You can playback the output file from your usb drive on bravia.

So don't just buy a tv on the basis of playing mkv files..choose tv with best pq and most important what you like.

It will take about 2 min if u are muxing 2 gb file..and so on.

Bravia can read exfat(where file size support is unlimited),fat32,fat16(file size support 4 gb, disc size support 32 gb).

pls post if you are having any problem with playback.

mkv is a container and m2ts is also a container. This application only change the container.. Doesn't reencode the video..so there is no huge cpu requirement.

thanks a lot. You saved my life.

Not sure if you guys know this, Sony have officialy released a DLNA streaming software - Homestream for Sony tv's (& might work on other TVs too) which works for all kinds of formats (DRM-free) and is built on the Serviio platform.

Homestream info here: Sony Homestream
Windows Setup: http://homestreamdownload.sony-europe.com/homestream-1.0-win-setup.exe
Mac Setup: http://homestreamdownload.sony-europe.com/homestream-1.0-osx.tar.gz
QuickStart Guide: http://campaign.odw.sony-europe.com/cross/H295/Homestream_Quickstart_Guide.pdf

I have been using this for about a week now (since I got my brand new Sony BRAVIA 40HX850 TV ) and works very good for me on Wi-Fi.
This works for me since I have a rig which is on 24/7. It has very simple interface for sharing and decoding options.

Hello,

I have the same TV and tried the Homestream configuration, didnt work. Could you please let me know what settings you had to do to make this work?

Thanks and regards,
Ramesh

hey lake1988,

have you figured how to play subs on the Sony LED TV? I hav the KDL-46EX650.
Why would they have the subtitle button on the remote? Folks at Sony haven't specified what subtitle format they support and whether it should be external or embedded in the media container.

I tried a few combinations/permutations like XSUB in DIVX, SRT in M2TS. Nothing works. I even tried muxing the streams to AVI, but got unstable playback.

Really frustating to split large files to <4GB in size and then copy all that to my FAT32 USB so that I can play it on my bluray player.

I thought the fact that Sony supports exFAT would be a good thing, not a pain.

With m2ts file sub won't show..this type of extension is used in bluray disc where sub shows because of bluray authoring...but here that type of support is not present in any media player unless it can play full bluray ISO..

Also if you have bluray player why play it on your tv...

I took a backup of one of my bluray disc on hdd and played back through tv's usb...the video bitrate was more than 40Mbps and it played fine without any issue like graphics being bad..
This thing may happen due to 1.issue with file/2.slow usb device like usb adapter for memory card..
It will play stutter free if you play it from pen drive/HDD.

Issue is due to this.

Muxing mode : Header stripping

You can't remove header stripping muxing from tsmuxer. You need to install mkvmerge gui..which is a freeware. Open it and go to File-->options--->mmg....there is a checkbox saying "disable header removal compression"..check that box and click on ok.
Restart mkvmerge gui.

Add the file-->mux it-->will produce a new mkv file--->add it in tsmuxer as mentioned in first post-->mux and play.
:)

Steps followed -
1) Extracted the audio and converted to AC3.
2) Removed header stripping using mkvmerge
3) unchecked the original audio in tsmuxer and used the extracted ac3 in step 1 to mux to .m2ts

Play back failed though :/
