I chanced upon this long running thread. I'm not an authority on Ilayaraja but have been deeply moved by his melodies.
Who can forget the haunting melody of "Thenpandi cheemayele" from Nayagan? Captures the feeling of being orphaned in a strange place so well.
I am a kannadiga and Ilayaraja commands a huge respect and fan following here as well. He started his career as an assistant to the legendary Kannada music composer GK Venkatesh. Though he hasn't composed much here whatever he has done has been top class.
Pallavi Anupallavi (first directorial venture of Maniratnam) has great melodies and is considered a music classic. Same with the movie "Geetha".
"Nammoora mandara hoove" is a classic too with so many experiments.
Very recently i heard s+ongs from the kannada movie "aa dinagalu" - again the maestro has weaved his magic.
Great soul.

Murali sir...today i was spellbound by listening to Agni Natchathiram in my HM-601 player combined with actively run HAT unity powered by Sinus Live amp and Sinus Live 10" sub.

The recording quality in Agni Natchathiram stands out among my limited other Raja sir collection. In the Chennai meet you were mentioning that there were around 30 great recordings of Raja based on a sound engineer who involved in that (forgot his name)..Can you share some of the best recordings of Raja's music that you have in your collection?

Being a Vinyl addict ,I mostly enjoy IR in Vinyl format. .
From the given list except Kalapaani and Guru, rest are experienced in Vinyl Format.

If you are currently in Chennai, I can give you the CD containing Kalapaani and Guru songs for listening.
I am available in Chennai tomorrow[2nd APR] between 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM.
Else next week. I am not sure about the date as of now.

Thanks Anil..Yesterday i was running some quality checks on some of the Ilayaraja CDs which i got from Flipkart...Endrum Iniyavai - Hits Of Ilaiyaraaja Vol - 1, Autograph, G.H. - Iliya Raja All Time Hits and Revival - Hits Of Ilayaraaja.

Basically, i ripped them to wav and then checked through Spek. I was astonished to see 80% of the songs were outright bad. Some of the songs don't peak above 7KHz. The CDs released by AGI is far far better. But, there also i can some delimiters around 16Khz and 20KHz. Basically, the quality of the song is 'truncated' to fit CD.

Just for comparison, I have Hotel California ripped from vinyl into 24/96 format. In that most of the peaks run upto 30KHz and occasional sparks were upto 40KHz. That is insane. But that lets our hearing ability to decide the cut off rather than the artificial cut offs in the CD.

Now, i envy you vinyl guys.

No it is not. The vinyl quality is not available in CDs as well. Few CDs released by AGI are some exception.
