Its raining vintage TTs

Thanks arjun. Mix and match is good idea. If one is making only wood plinth (No aluminium sheets) one option is to mould the top layer in such a way that the upper surface of the plinth has in maximum contact with turntable metal chassis.

Hi Hiten,
I am planning to use 10mm Black Acrylic for plinth as MDF and Plywood of this thickness is difficult to source. It will also look good. What do you think of this?

Sachin

Sachin,
Would acrylic be good material ? If you cut the chassis shape and couple the chassis with plywood I think it will serve both the purpose. A shop down the road from my office have ready high glossed mdf (Will have to check) thick sheets. Sides are also finished. If you want can post pics.

You can turn the top plate 90 degree,so variety of of tonearm can be mounted.I am considering this design http://www.lencoheaven.net/forum/index.php?topic=13111.0
Please use 18mm ply for plinth and 10mm(only)for bottom layers.

Sachin

do try it once with an external Pod/setting once.. the Motor "field" can affect the tonearm cable and produce hum and I preferred it slightly higher up and away from the motor.

Saw this acrylic plinth on high end thorens. So I guess it would be okay if you use acrylic plinth and plywood (Birch ?) combination. Will look good too. :)
one link : Lenco Plinth

Any suggestion pls.
Shafic,
bottom one looks good. But I think slate is used on top. Not sure. Also no need to destroy original lenco metal chassis. For verticle orientation as arjun has said motor comes close to wires. At higher signal voltages it would been no problem but at preamp level every little thing helps. So either to keep motor away from wires or put some ferrite strips between them. Will serve multiple purpose of sheilding from noise too.

Quick question: I avoided acrylic on top layer as I thought it won't be possible to varnish it like wood or MDF or plywood. In fact my plinth sandwiches two layers of acrylic somewhere in the middle and they are going to show up on the side. So the problem remains - varnish will not stick to the acrylic visible in the side. So I sort of made up my mind that the only way to get around this is to use automobile paint or veneer it. I am more inclined to veneering. If we use acrylic as the top layer, will veneer stick to the acrylic surface? Of course one can also choose to buff and polish the acrylic surface and retain its beauty on the top layer. But how to finish the subsequent layers below?

And, how hard will it be to DIY veneering?

That you should not experiment too much:lol::lol::lol:
:D:lol:

Only two thing came to my mind, how I need to go ahead -
  1. Adding mass to plinth but non resonating material like layered wood, still came to know that more damping kills TT sound.
  2. TT-platform isolation is required. TT is placed on heavy solid platform and connection from plinth to base must be spike like - one directional stopping feedback.

You can use Black colour Acrylic on top layer. It looks good,no need to paint or Veneer.BTW: Veneering is not that tough,I never did it though.See this thread If I Can Do It - You Can Do It! Veneering A PL-530 TT - AudioKarma.org Home Audio Stereo Discussion Forums
