One of the reason could be that your ripped movie has two source sound - one is stereo and other is 5.1. Blu Ray picks the first sound and send to AVR. You can change that from Audio setting. In my Pioneer BD player, I can check this with Audio button on remote or quick menu where information about movies appear.

Hope this should solve your problem.

I have seen even BR Rip 1080p audio encoded in DTS-Master HD files while playing through USB of my Asus O Play Mini YHT 299 doesnt decodes the audio and sends only 2.1, hence all the time PCM with Decoder Off message appearing in AVR display. What could be the issue guys?

Can someone please throw some light on How much total power consumption in watts by YHT-299 AV receiver + Subwoofer does in normal operation (not in eco mode, in eco mode its 20% less). Specifications sheet mentions only standby power consumption.

Actually I am in the process of buying a home UPS and calculating how much load will be required.

Please help..

Most of AVR spec says do not run the system on UPS..But some of the forum members it is not a problem with sinwave UPS .so please check before deciding.

Does it bother anyone that the default speakers in YHT-299 are mere 600W RMS?

And how do they compare when compared to the gen-pop Sony, LG, etc which are 1000W RMS and more? I know YHT give the option of upgrading the speakers but straight out of the box isn't this rms a concern? (Honestly, as of now this is the only parameter I can make sense of and compare for speakers)

I feel it would be safe to run with sinewave UPS than without UPS as the AVR won't get affected by any sudden power cut

Sunil Thanks a lot!

Can you please suggest one safe UPS for me.

Plan: Put 40"LED TV (Power consumption 109 W during operation) + Projector (262W Max power consumption) + Yamaha 299 AVR + Yamaha 299 Subwoofer + Tata Sky HD STB + Asus O Player Mini.

Hi,

RMS is not a concern at all. The speakers are way ahead when you compare them to the sepakers of Sony, LG, Samsung HT's. Those speakers are loud but not clear. Beleive me, at half of its capacity with a good source playing, the sound will be terrific.

Thanks,
Sandeep.

First of all I would like to thank everyone on this forum to help me realize my long lasting dream of owning a good audio system for my movies. I have been lurking on this forum for a few years now. Finally, I have a place and the budget to materialize my dream.

I am in Chennai and after reading all your posts and reviews, I decided to go for Yamaha YHT-299 a week ago. Little did I know that the model is out of stock and I will have to shell out 15K extra for the new one. Reliance Digital had a demo piece at Phoenix Mall, Velachery but the sub woofer was out of order. The guy was ready to let it go for around Rs 35K with the sub repaired / replaced with a working one. I wasn't gung ho for the repair, moreover, being a demo piece, the deal didn't inspire me much.

I started hunting for the model everywhere I could. There were good deals available on YHT-2910 with the least offer of Rs 43000. I had a tight budget so was persistent on finding a sweeter deal for YHT-299.

Finally, found someone on OLX in Jammu who had a packed piece (given to him as a gift) lying around since last 8 months, packed and company sealed. He hadn't even opened the box seal. Long story short, post some one hour of haggling over multiple phone calls and discussing our passion for music systems, I got a sweet deal price. Wired the money to his bank account and out shipped the box through courier. There some delays due to Diwali holidays though. Nevertheless, it will be delivered to me on or before Nov 4th, 2014.

I have a few questions for the experts and rookies to answer to help me set up the home theater.

1. Are all the speaker and HDMI cables included in the box?

2. Is it necessary to call the Yamaha service guy over to install the system? What expertise do they bring with them to optimize the acoustics? Are they also very pressed on up selling better cables, wall mounts etc?

3. I would need the wall mounts for the front and rear speakers. I have read the they charge Rs 500 for each speaker wall mount. Can someone share the pics of the mount they install? I am eyeing this one from eBay Wall Mount FOR Surround Speakers 2 NOS | eBay Will this work for YHT-299 speakers? Can I buy it on my own and ask the Yamaha guy to install them for me?

4. If you suggest against getting the Yamaha guy over, how should I place my speakers for optimal sound? I know that Yamaha has YPAO feature - how effective is it?

5. If you can share the Yamaha service center number where I book an appointment for the installation.

I will share my experiences with pictures post installation next week.

Thanks
Vikram

Hi Vikram,

Welcome to the club. I am sure you will love it. Please find my answers below,

1. Are all the speaker and HDMI cables included in the box?
Speaker cable is included in the box. But I am not sure if it will be enough for you. They give us a very short cable which we have to cut and use it for all the speakers. My suggestion would be to take a good speaker cables outside. You will get them in all reputed stores.
HDMI cable is not included in the box. You will have to buy it seperately.

2. Is it necessary to call the Yamaha service guy over to install the system? What expertise do they bring with them to optimize the acoustics? Are they also very pressed on up selling better cables, wall mounts etc?
Well, Going by my experience it is not much of help calling a Service guy. I am not sure of Yamaha Service guys, but I have had a bad time with Reliance Service center guys. I have heard that Yamaha guys charge a bomb for installation. It is better if you get a carpenter for wire casing and then tune the settings in avr all by yourself. You can read through the thread for various settings and you can also play with them by yourself.

I have my speakers wallmounted but have not used any speaker brackets.

4. If you suggest against getting the Yamaha guy over, how should I place my speakers for optimal sound? I know that Yamaha has YPAO feature - how effective is it?
YPAO will be good if you are using this in a closed room. In a living room which has lots of empty spaces YPAO will not be very effective.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Sandeep.

For wall mounts, you can try Jenefas.. I'm using it.. 200 each.. You can get it directly from Ritchie Street or any Mercy electronics shop

After a lot of back and forth, considerable confusion, multiple visits to different showrooms and multiple auditions that included All Along the Watch tower/ Voodoo Child/ Sail-Awolnation/ Stairway to heaven/ Pumped up kicks, surprisingly it was Tu Jaane na (Kailash Kher version) that made all the difference between the Sony and YHT-196. Sony sounded just like my Bravia, albeit a bit louder!! YHT sounded like music is meant to be listened to!
Tested the 196 and went out on a limb to buy YHT-299 (34K) since everyone here virtually recommends it like food & water! :P
Have to install it properly now! Realized that I underestimated the dimensions of the Rx/ Amp. YHT-299... seems like it was always meant to be now! :P

Yet to get a BD Player. Suggestions are requested..m :)

And a big thanks to everyone in this forum! Gosh, to think that I was going for Sony!! Thanks ppl... Can't wait to set it up now! Off to get an entertainment unit! :P

Thank you very much for your response. I need to clarify a few more things:

Can you suggest good speaker and HDMI cable brands which are able to provide optimum sound quality and still not burn a hole in my pocket?

how have you wall mounted the speakers? I wanted to buy the mount brackets to better aesthetics and ability to direct the speakers. do the if the bracket in the link I posted earlier will work since you are already using them?

Thank you
Vikram

Guys I have a question - can anyone recommend a Bluetooth attachment for YHT-299/2910 that plugs into the USB or 3.5 mm AUX port? I am not looking for expensive stuff. Any guidance please?

Many thanks!!

Congratulations Mate. Welcome to the Club. Do share your experience of the system. Coming to the Blu ray Player, I use a basic Phillips Blu ray player. It works well for me. It can play all types of formats and stuff. I have got that from Reliance Digital at a discounted price when I have purchased my YHT - 299. No regrets on it so far.

You can also take a look at Pioneer BDP-450 and Pioneer BDP-160. Both have got very good reviews with in the forum.

Thanks,
Sandeep.

Hi Vikram,

I am using cheap, local made HDMI cables right now. I have read some where that it does not make much of a difference between costly and cheap HDMI cables until the length of the cable is less than 10m. You can try googling about this topic. However, there are few who say that it does make a difference. I thought of trying out with the cheaper ones. In my case, they are absolutely fine and work normally.
For Speaker cables, I have bought Bandrige cables from Reliance Digital itself. They are good and the price is about 40/- to 50/- per meter.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Sandeep.

Hi Guys I am just about to order this - what do you think will this work?
1pc A2DP 3 5mm Stereo Bluetooth Music Receiver Audio Dongle Adapter Excellent | eBay

Hey there,

The problem with bluetooth devices is that you will never get the same sound production when compared with the source. The quality will be lower even if you play high bit rate files. However with that being said, there are receivers out there which have Bluetooth 4.0 and apt-X decoding, which definitely sound better than other receivers but they are on the expensive side (In India, US they are cheaper)

Another issue with bluetooth receivers is the range. Most of them boast of long ranges but the sound starts to stutter even when you go away 10 feet.

So my advice - don't spend on a cheap receiver if you're hooking it up with a good system such as a YHT-299 simply because it will not do justice to the system. It makes sense if you're attaching them to a 2.1 speaker system but a HTS  . Some good receivers u can look at are:

Other Good Bluetooth Music Receivers Review - Portable HiFi

But the availability in India can be an issue.

But if you simply want to add wireless streaming to your setup without the thrills and frills then you can add a simple cheap receiver. Rest the choice is yours :)

Friends, after testing the system under various configuration permutations and combinations for a considerable amount of time (1 month!), I now plan to hook up the speakers at appropriate places. Right now I have connected the speakers with bundled cable itself (which has fallen short and I had to make joints for both L & R front speakers:sad:). I want to replace the speaker cables and interconnects with another branded good quality speaker cables and ICs.

Please suggest me good speaker cable FOR YAMAHA YHT-299 as I have read in the forum that sound quality may be specific to specific cable and set up. Bandridge even 14AWG prices shot up now a days. Please suggest me something between Bandridge and bundled cables & IC---total VFM!

What about Monoprice, MX or even Finolex? Have people tested these cables with YHT 299?

Please advise.
