Just bought Yamaha YHT-299

Auditioned the Yamaha YHT-299. The active sub was not punchy and powerful. Stock sony/Lg subs worked better. Plus the sound distorted @ high volumes.
Is it normal or was it a faulty piece?

I too had felt the same but the listening environment was very bad though, noisy reliance digital.

THANKS GUYS...FORMATTED THE PEN DRIVE AND USED IT WITH ONLY 2 MP3 ...IT WORKED.....THANKS A LOT....about WD Live tv.... still not able to decide weather to go for wd live tv or basic BD Player from Samsung/LG/Philips....

I have WDTV Live Hub (older model with in-built hard disk). UI is good but response is sluggish.

If you want play CD, BD, etc. buy BD player, else if you are primarily using digital content, get a media player.

OK..THANKS A LOT.. IAM PLANNING TO BUY ONE bd pLAYER...

one more thing...how to setup yamaha yht 299.. the RESQ guy came completed the setup but somehow iam not happy.. the sound not perfect..

i mean is there any audio setting like level, distance which i can do my self.. any particular setting...

for example i was watching aeon flux on my tata HD connection... for HD audio i used straight mode but still the sound was boomy.. i hope i am able to explain myself...

kindly suggest any particular setting for natural surround sound feel...

Guys - just bought the YHT 299.

I have some mp4 and avi files on the USB stick, for mp4 it is only playing the audio and no video, and for avi it's not even showing the file in the list.

Any idea what could be the issue ?

thanks

You may only play mp3's off the usb,its not a media player as such its an avr ...so hook the usb to your tv or bd player and get an input running into the avr ..Its normal behaviour only..only the hi-end avr's from yamaha play the media files apart from mp3 by the way..these are base level avr's so too much to expect that here

Hi,

I am planning to by YHT-299.I have been reading through the thread but it is a big one. I just wanted to know if the receiver has HDMI passthrough? Means if the AVR is not powered on, does it pass through the signal from the source to TV?

I wanted a basic AVR and after some research , decided to go for Pioneer VSX-329. But then I came to know about Yamaha YHT-299. I always wanted to buy RX-V375 when I read reviews about it in whatHi-fi. Bt i was too expensive. Then i came to know that it is the same receiver in YHT-299. So I am planning for the Yamaha. But the speaker package (NS-P20) is not the best. So I am thinking twice.

It does not has hdmi passthrough in standby. In this price range i guess none have. Apart from that i like it in every aspect. It even plays wav lossless via the usb port (which yamaha does not mention).
Yht299 is good for the price, you can upgrade the fronts with a decent pair of bookshelf later for better music performance. :)

Ok.So it doesn't have HDMI pass through in standby.... I guess Pioneer 329 has this feature.

As per pioneer india website specs sheet standby passthrought is not there in 329 however in vsx-524 they mention yes. Double confirm at dealership. I am using component out from stb for the purpose with rx-v375.

I am using this and am very happy with the performance.
Can anybody suggest a reasonably priced, HDD based media player for use with this as my DVD player has started giving problems.

Hello!
My name is Mariano, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I've just bought YHT 299. I'm very happy with it, its sound is really crisp and clear. It's my first big acquisition in audio, so maybe in the future I'll upgrade the speakers, but for now, I'll enjoy this fantastic piece of equipment.

I have two questions about the subwoofer. Maybe you already spoke about this, sorry if that's the case. The sub included in the packet has a on/off switch in the back, and since I installed the system, I always leave the sub switch to on, so when I turn the receiver on, the sub is ready for use. Question: is it OK to leave the sub always on? Sholud I turn it off when the receiver is off?

The second question: my sub volume knob is set to half (5). Is it ok to set it louder? let's say for example 7? I don't want to force it, so please confirm if it's ok to raise it up.

Thanks!

If the YHT-299 has a power-on protection circuit and you are not concerned about the standby power consumption of the sub, you could leave it on. This means it is exposed to the electrical grid for longer than necessary, which might be bad for the sub if the power grid in AR is terrible.

1) Switch it off when not in use, save power and save your sub for longevity
2)Its upto you based on how much punch you want ,I keep it personally at 60-70% levels
