LG 50PK550R Owner's Discussion Thread

I had to wait a while for my PK, (month) despite being an LG (group; not LGE) employee and buying direct from Company...and them some more again (fortnight) for a replacement .... so not surprised. Are other folks facing accute stock shortages? These TV's are imported directly from Korea BTW, they do not assemble them in Pune. They might be bringing the drool-worthy PX series next year, but they will cost a bomb. The PK is still the best VFM in Plasmas.

I think I am done with 100 hours, brightness and contrast has definitely improved. Saw a blu-ray rip of "Up" yesterday...blew me away, especially Kevin's (bird) colors. Don't miss going to the theater anymore (used to go atleast twice a month; now it's probably once in 2 months). If you have a stomach for the waiting (It is stressful, I know) and the "new bride" treatment you'll have to dish out for the 1st month, the PK is worth every penny.

I bought 50PK550 last August (my apology for coming back to this thread after so long). Like most of you, I am also completely spellbound with the picture quality. It is simply mind boggling. I would recommend to all who believes in value for money. And thanks to all contributors to this thread who helped me to zoom in to this model.
I am done with almost 120 hoursas of now, no IR, no complain. thanks god.

Now my intention is to protect myself from future hefty pay outs from post warranty defects. The AMC from LG service centre is quite a good amount of money (INR 7000/ year). Is there any cheaper alternatives? Look forward to your suggestions.

Hello Everyone!

Warm greetings I hv been following this forum after being introduced to it by my cousin.

He is an owner of a Plasma TV. I was highly suspicious of his intelligence:rolleyes:, buying the old age technology plasma, the dead tv range as per me (to be R.I.P.-ed next to the CRTs:indifferent14:). But then I saw channels like NDTV good time on his TV set. The image was no way near to the quality on my 29 inch CRT but waaaayyy better than the blocky images I saw on a Sony Bravia EX (3 or 4 I do not remember) LCD.

Now with no concerns on the technology to choose, I have come to this great fountain of knowledge, seeking help in getting the best and BIGGEST screen TV (no gray market stuff or low grade brands pls) within my budget of 40K (cannot stretch it by even a penny - or else it will be just the 29 incher and me for another 1-2 yrs):ohyeah:

Guys, I am about to buy this Plasma but as im reading from the first post, some of u are saying that it doesn't have ISF expert Picture mode and some of u are saying that it does not have advanced calibration settings in Indian PK550 model and some of u are saying that it started showing green pixel after u reached 55 brightness.

Is this all true?

Please tell me soon coz I am gonna buy this plasma in a day or two online from ebay.in

Doesn't it have the picture settings mode which has been showed on plasmatvbuyingguide after calibration?????

If u guys say that all these problems I have written in my this post are true so then I will buy LG 47LE5500 LED TV.

Hi friends this is my first post in hifi. I had booked 50pk550 at kohinoor at thane on 2nd Nov, under the 320gb hdd diwali offer. The sales person at kohinoor had promised delivery on 5th. Now started my wait for the beauty to reach home. On 5th i was told it i will get the tv by 8th, on 8th it became 11th and so on. In between i called up the area sales manager(?) and he said i will get the tv by 25th.

Now yesterday i.e. on 27th Nov the same sales manager is saying the tv is not being manufactured for now and so either i can take a refund or select any other model as he has no idea when he can provide me with 50pk550. On letting him know that i am willing to wait, he is telling me that i wont get the 320gb hdd.

Guys now help me out what am i supposed to do, have already spent 9000 on a tv unit for the tv. Talking with the dealer is also not helping because he is more interested in selling me a panasonic v20 (way out of budget).

This entire episode has spoiled mine and my family's Diwali.

Sorry for you and your family...
In case of delivery of d TVs d dealer is completely responsible... however you can try and ask the sales manager you contacted to escalate the matter and get the TV. I would say this TV is the best VFM... So better try your best before you go for the alternate options...

I would say this TV is best VFM deal. I do agree there is the green pixel issue but trust me you have to stay within 2 ft to identify that. The PQ is really good and gets better with usage.
Reg Adv calibration, I am sorry if you are really looking at advanced calibrations and stuffs like the one's discussed in avsforum then this is not the one for you.
But just for clarification, lacking of advanced calibration does not mean you cannot adjust the picture settings. You can do that. Ofcourse you can change the brightness, contrast, sharpness, color, tint, temperature, black levels.
I would suggest you to take a home demo from any frnds and then decide for yourselves. Store demo is not good for Plasmas.

I don't know the dynamics of the distributors for the zones that are facing PK shortages, but yesterday I was shopping around in marathahalli for home decor, noticed that both ezone and the LG shoppe had them on display with a 69k tag + free HDD. The LG soppe guy when asked abt the pk750, said that PK950 is avaiable for the 60" category , but only on a order basis.

Hi,

Call Krishna on 09923108049. He is very helpful. May not provide immediate solution. Detail your complaint and take a date for delivery. If not then you should escalate to business head / VoC.

With latest firmware and manual service settings the green pixels should be reduced considerably.

plasmatvbuyingguide is the worst place where one can look for advice.

Check out both and base your purchase on what you like.

Guys... it might be time to write the eulogy for the 50PK550R. Went to chroma to buy some elctronics, so checked out the status of the PK. Much to me surprise they said, no stock, and is probably discontinued.

I had booked the 50PK550R on November 7th and they had promised delivery within 15-20 days. However the delivery was constantly being postponed citing "system issues" at LG end. The local manager of Girias was very helpful and tried his best to get the TV, but was handicapped due to lack of response from LG guys.

Today stepped into the showroom and cancelled the order, after giving a piece of my mind to the LG area executive/ rep (whatever!). Next step is to send a stinker email to the sales management team - does anyone know the email IDs of big shots at the Karnataka/ India level?

Just wondering if I can get LG to pay me 40 days of interest for the full payment that I had made in advance.

No Use, if they have discontinued the model. Plasma wasn't a big focus for LG India anyhow...which is a bloody shame. As it is Indian consumer market is dictated by hype and ignorance, and Plasma tech got a bad rap for no particular reason. The PK was a darned good TV at the price level it was being offered, I shed a tear.

Dude, it might turn out to be a blessing in disguise for you. Check out the Samsung PS50C6500 - A far greater vfm set than PK550 IMO.

In fact I am now thinking that had I waited for another few months instead of buying 50PK550, I would have gone for this sammy. I wonder what other PK550 owners feel about this set.

"Requiem for a LG 50PK550R." - Who wants to make a movie?

Haven't seen the C6500 but should be a good one. Am happy with the PK550 but may replace it in 2011. Will Panasonic produce a Pioneer Kuro killer? Not seen a Kuro myself so unsure how the killer would be :p

Samsung 50C7000 would have been a perfect Plasma for all viewing habits. Saw it in Hong Kong. Sadly it's available only in 63" in India.

Having owned a Samsung LCD and LG Plasma I can vouch for one thing - Samsung is notch above LG in terms of quality and make.

I will second that. When you get a much better product for the same price, it is disappointing and you feel let down. It's time that we have better consumer protection laws such as allowing to return a product after trying it out for some time.

Having seen all 3 plasmas over and over again I would say Panny still stands on top....specially V series.
